NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame and came to test him with difficult questions.1 Sed et regina Saba, audita fama Salomonis — in hono rem nominis Domini — venit tentare eum in aenigmatibus.
She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large retinue, with camels laden with spices and an immensequantity of gold and precious stones. Having reached Solomon, she discussed with him everything that she hadin mind,2 Et ingressa Ierusalem multo cum comitatu et divitiis, camelis portantibus aromata et aurum infinitum nimis et gemmas pretiosas, venit ad Salomonem et locuta est ei universa, quae habebat in corde suo.
and Solomon had an answer for al her questions; not one of them was too obscure for the king toanswer for her.3 Et docuit eam Salomon omnia verba, quae proposuerat: non fuit sermo, qui regem posset latere, et non responderet ei.
When the queen of Sheba saw how very wise Solomon was, the palace which he had built,4 Videns autem regina Saba omnem sapientiam Salomonis et domum, quam aedificaverat,
the food at his table, the accommodation for his officials, the organisation of his staff and the way theywere dressed, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings which he presented in the Temple of Yahweh, it left herbreathless,5 et cibos mensae eius et sessionem servorum et ordinem ministrantium vestesque eorum et pincernas et holocausta, quae offerebat in domo Domini, non habebat ultra spiritum
and she said to the king, 'The report I heard in my own country about your wisdom in handling youraffairs was true then!6 dixitque ad regem: “ Verus est sermo, quem audivi in terra mea super rebus tuis et super sapientia tua!
Until I came and saw for myself, I did not believe the reports, but clearly I was told less than half: forwisdom and prosperity, you surpass what was reported to me.7 Et non credebam narrantibus mihi, donec ipsa veni et vidi oculis meis et probavi quod media pars mihi nuntiata non fuerit; maior est sapientia et bona tua quam rumor, quem audivi.
How fortunate your wives are! How fortunate these courtiers of yours, continual y in attendance on youand listening to your wisdom!8 Beati viri tui et beati servi tui hi, qui stant coram te semper et audiunt sapientiam tuam!
Blessed be Yahweh your God who has shown you his favour by setting you on the throne of Israel!Because of Yahweh's everlasting love for Israel, he has made you king to administer law and justice.'9 Sit Dominus Deus tuus benedictus, cui placuisti, et posuit te super thronum Israel, eo quod dilexerit Dominus Israel in sempiternum et constituit te regem, ut faceres iudicium et iustitiam ”.
And she presented the king with a hundred and twenty talents of gold and great quantities of spicesand precious stones; no such wealth of spices ever came again as those which the queen of Sheba gave to KingSolomon.10 Dedit ergo regi centum viginti talenta auri et aromata multa nimis et gemmas pretiosas; non sunt allata ultra aromata tam multa quam ea, quae dedit regina Saba regi Salomoni.
Similarly, Hiram's fleet, which brought the gold from Ophir, also brought back great cargoes of almugtimber and precious stones.11 Sed et classis Hiram, quae portabat aurum de Ophir, attulit ex Ophir ligna thyina multa nimis et gemmas pretiosas.
Of the almug timber the king made supports for the Temple of Yahweh and for the royal palace, andharps and lyres for the musicians; no more of this almug timber has since come or been seen to this day.12 Fecitque rex de lignis thyinis fulcra domus Domini et domus regiae et citharas lyrasque cantoribus. Non sunt allata huiuscemodi ligna thyina neque visa usque in praesentem diem.
And King Solomon, in his turn, presented the queen of Sheba with everything that she expressed awish for, besides those presents which he gave her with a munificence worthy of King Solomon. After which, shewent home to her own country, she and her servants.13 Rex autem Salomon dedit reginae Saba omnia, quae voluit et petivit ab eo, praeter ea, quae ultro obtulerat ei munere regio. Quae reversa est et abiit in terram suam cum servis suis.
The weight of gold received annually by Solomon amounted to six hundred and sixty-six talents ofgold,14 Erat autem pondus auri, quod afferebatur Salomoni per annos singulos, sescentorum sexaginta sex talentorum auri,
besides what tol s and foreign trade, as well as everything the Arab kings and the provincial governorsbrought in.15 praeter id, quod proveniebat ex tributis subiectorum et commercio negotiatorum et omnium regum Arabiae et ducum terrae.
King Solomon made two hundred great shields of beaten gold, six hundred shekels of gold going intoone shield;16 Fecit quoque rex Salomon ducenta scuta de auro puro, sescentos auri siclos dedit in laminas scuti unius;
also three hundred small shields of beaten gold, three mina of gold going into one shield; and the kingput these into the House of the Forest of Lebanon.17 et trecentas peltas ex auro probato, tres minae auri unam peltam vestiebant; posuitque ea rex in domo Saltus Libani.
The king also made a great ivory throne which he overlaid with refined gold.18 Fecit etiam rex Salomon thronum de ebore grandem et vestivit eum auro fulvo nimis.
The throne had six steps, a back with a rounded top, and arms on each side of the seat; two lionsstood beside the arms,19 Qui habebat sex gradus, et summitas throni rotunda erat in parte posteriori, et duae manus hinc atque inde tenentes sedile, et duo leones stabant iuxta manus;
and twelve lions stood on each side of the six steps. Nothing like it has ever been made in any otherkingdom.20 et duodecim leunculi stantes super sex gradus hinc atque inde. Non est factum tale opus in universis regnis.
Al King Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and al the plate in the House of the Forest ofLebanon was of pure gold; silver was little thought of in Solomon's days,21 Sed et omnia vasa, quibus potabat rex Salomon, erant aurea, et universa supellex domus Saltus Libani de auro purissimo; non erat argentum nec alicuius pretii putabatur in diebus Salomonis,
since the king had a fleet of Tarshish at sea with Hiram's fleet, and once every three years the fleet ofTarshish would come back laden with gold and silver, ivory, apes and baboons.22 quia classis Tharsis, quae regi erat, per mare cum classe Hiram semel per tres annos redibat deferens aurum et argentum et ebur et simias et pavos.
For riches and for wisdom, King Solomon surpassed al kings on earth,23 Magnificatus est ergo rex Salomon super omnes reges terrae divitiis et sapientia.
and the whole world consulted Solomon to hear the wisdom which God had implanted in his heart;24 Et universa terra desiderabat vultum Salomonis, ut audiret sapientiam eius, quam dederat Deus in corde eius.
and everyone would bring a present with him: things made of silver, things made of gold, robes,armour, spices, horses and mules; and this went on year after year.25 Et singuli deferebant ei munera, vasa argentea et aurea, vestes et arma bellica, aromata quoque et equos et mulos per annos singulos.
Solomon then built up a force of chariots and cavalry; he had one thousand four hundred chariots andtwelve thousand horses, these he stationed in the chariot towns and near the king in Jerusalem.26 Congregavitque Salomon currus et equites, et facti sunt ei mille quadringenti currus et duodecim milia equitum; et disposuit eos per civitates quadrigarum et cum rege in Ierusalem.
In Jerusalem the king made silver as common as stones, and cedar wood as plentiful as sycamore inthe lowlands.27 Fecitque ut tanta esset abundantia argenti in Ierusalem quanta et lapidum; et cedrorum praebuit multitudinem quasi sycomoros, quae nascuntur in Sephela.
Solomon's horses were imported from Muzur and Cilicia. The king's dealers acquired them fromCilicia at the prevailing price.28 Et educebantur equi Salomoni de Aegypto et de Coa; negotiatores enim regis emebant de Coa statuto pretio.
A chariot was imported from Egypt for six hundred silver shekels and a horse from Cilicia for ahundred and fifty. They also supplied the Hittite and Aramaean kings, who al used them as middlemen.29 Constabat autem et egrediebatur quadriga ex Aegypto sescentis siclis argenti, et equus centum quinquaginta; atque in hunc modum cunctis regibus Hetthaeorum et Syriae per manus suas venundabant.
