1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Let me choose twelve thousand men and set off this very night in pursuitof David.	1 Achitofel disse ad Assalonne: « Mi sceglierò dodici mila uomini e andrò a inseguir David questa notte,
2 I shal fal on him while he is tired and dispirited; I shal strike terror into him, and al the people whoare with him wil run away. I shal kil only the king,	2 e così, assalendolo mentre è stanco e scoraggiato, lo batterò, e quando sarà fuggita tutta la gente che è con lui, percuoterò il re desolato,
3 and I shal then bring al the people back to you, like a bride returning to her husband. You seek thelife of one individual only; the people as a whole wil have peace.'	3 e ricondurrò tutto il popolo, come si farebbe tornare un uomo solo; tu infatti non cerchi che un uomo solo, e tutto il popolo sarà in pace ».
4 The suggestion seemed a good one to Absalom and all the elders of Israel.	4 Tal discorso piacque ad Assalonne e a tutti gli anziani d'Israele.
5 Then Absalom said, 'Now cal Hushai the Archite, for us to hear what he too has to say.'	5 Ma Assalonne disse: « Chiamate Cusai Arachita, e sentiamo anche il suo parere ».
6 When Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom said, 'This is what Ahithophel says. Are we to do as hesuggests? If not, suggest something yourself.'	6 Essendogli venuto dinanzi Cusai, Assalonne gli disse: « Achitòfel ha dato questo consiglio: dobbiamo seguirlo o no? E tu qual consiglio daresti? »
7 Hushai said to Absalom, 'On this occasion the advice given by Ahithophel is not good.	7 Cusai rispose ad Assalonne: « Il consiglio d'Achitofel questa volta non è buono ».
8 You know', Hushai went on, 'that your father and his men are great fighters and that they are now asangry as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is a man of war: he wil not let the army rest during thenight.	8 E seguitò a dire: « Tu sai che tuo padre e gli uomini che son con lui son fortissimi, ed esasperati, come un'orsa infuriata a cui siano stati rapiti nella boscaglia i figli; e di più tuo padre è un uomo di battaglia, e non starà fermo colla sua gente.
9 At this moment he is concealed in some hol ow or other place. If at the outset there are casualtiesamong our troops, word will go round that the army supporting Absalom has met with disaster.	9 Forse egli ora sta nascosto nelle caverne, o in altro luogo da lui scelto; e se anche uno dei tuoi cade da principio, chiunque l'avrà udito andrà a dire: E' toccata una sconfitta al popolo che seguiva Assalonne.
10 And then even the valiant, the truly lion-hearted, will be demoralised; for al Israel knows that yourfather is a champion and that the men with him are valiant.	10 Allora i più forti, anche quelli che hanno un cuor di leone, rimarranno scoraggiati dalla paura, perchè tutto il popolo d'Israele sa che tuo padre è forte e che son valorosi tutti quelli che son con lui.
11 For my part, I offer this advice: Summon al Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, to ral y to you, asnumerous as the sand on the seashore, and you take the field in person with them.	11 Ecco dunque quello che mi sembra un buon consiglio. Quando sarà radunato intorno a te tutto il popolo d'Israele, da Dan fino a Bersabee, innumerevole come l'arena del mare, e tu in mezzo a loro,
12 We shall reach him wherever he is to be found; we shal fal on him as the dew fal s on the ground,and not leave him or any one of the men with him.	12 ci getteremo sopra di lui dovunque si trovi: lo ricopriremo come la rugiada suol coprire la terra, e di tutti gli uomini che son con lui non ne lasceremo scappare neppur uno.
13 Should he retire into a town, all Israel will bring ropes to that town, and we shal drag it into the river-bed until not a pebble of it is to be found.'	13 Se poi entrasse in qualche città, tutto Israele cingerà di funi quella città e la trascinerà nel torrente in modo da non ritrovarne neanche una pietruzza ».
14 Then Absalom and al the people of Israel said, 'Hushai the Arkite's advice is better thanAhithophel's,' Yahweh having resolved to thwart Ahithophel's shrewd advice and so bring disaster on Absalom.	14 Assalonne e tutti gli uomini d'Israele dissero: « Il consiglio di Cusai Arachita è migliore di quello di Achitofel ». Così, per volontà del Signore, fu reso vano l'utile consiglio d'Achitofel, perchè il Signore voleva far cadere la sciagura sopra Assalonne.
15 Hushai then told the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Ahithophel gave such and such advice to Absalomand the elders of Israel, but I advised so and so.	15 Poi Cusai andò a dire a Sadoc e ad Abiatar sacerdoti: « Achitòfel ha dato ad Assalonne ed ai seniori d'Israele tale e tale consiglio ed io ho dato quest'altro.
16 Send with al speed to David and say, "Do not camp in the desert passes tonight, but get throughthem as fast as you can, or the king and his whole army may be annihilated." '	16 Or dunque spedite subito chi lo faccia sapere a David e gli dica: Non ti fermare questa notte nelle pianure del deserto, ma passa senza ritardo di là, affinchè il re non resti schiacciato con tutta la sua gente ».
17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were posted at the Fuller's Spring; a servant-girl was to go and warn themand they in turn were to warn King David, since they could not give themselves away by coming into the citythemselves.	17 Or Gionata e Achimaas, che stavano presso la fontana di Rogel, appena giunse una serva ad avvertirli, partirono per recare l'avviso al re David. Essi non dovevano esser veduti, nè entrare in città,
18 A young man saw them nonetheless and told Absalom. The pair of them, however, made off quickly,reaching the house of a man in Bahurim. In his courtyard was a storage-wel and they got down into it.	18 ma li vide un certo giovinetto che ne avvisò Assalonne. Allora essi, entrati di corsa in casa di un certo uomo di Bahurim, il quale aveva nel suo cortile un pozzo, vi si calaron dentro.
19 The woman took a piece of canvas and, spreading it over the mouth of the storage-wel , scatteredcrushed grain on it so that nothing showed.	19 La donna di casa prese una coperta e la distese sulla bocca del pozzo, come per seccare l'orzo pesto, in modo che restassero nascosti.
20 When Absalom's servants reached the woman at the house, they said, 'Where are Ahimaaz andJonathan?' The woman said, 'They have gone further on, towards the water.' They searched but, having foundnothing, went back to Jerusalem.	20 Or quando i servi di Assalonne giunsero in quella casa e dissero alla donna: « Dov'è Achimaas e Gionata? » la donna rispose: « Son passati in fretta dopo aver bevuto un po' d'acqua ». Così quelli che li cercavano, non avendoli trovati, se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme.
21 When they had gone, the men climbed out of the storage-wel and went to warn King David. 'Set out!'they told David. 'Cross the water quickly, for Ahithophel has given such and such advice against you!'	21 Quando se ne furono andati, Achimaas e Gionata uscirono dal pozzo e andarono a portar l'avviso al re David e dissero: « Movetevi e passate subito il fiume, perchè Achitò­fel ha dato tal consiglio contro di voi ».
22 So David and al the troops with him set off and crossed the Jordan. By dawn no one was left, al hadcrossed the Jordan.	22 David e tutta la gente che era con lui si mossero e passarono il Giordano prima che si facesse giorno: non ci fu nessuno che non passasse il fiume.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set off andwent home to his own town. Then, having set his house in order, he hanged himself. He was buried in hisfather's tomb.	23 Quando Achitòfel vide che non era stato eseguito il suo consiglio, sellò il suo asino e se ne andò a casa sua nella sua città, poi, dopo aver messo in ordine la sua casa, s'impiccò, e fu sepolto nel sepolcro di suo padre.
24 David had reached Mahanaim by the time that Absalom crossed the Jordan with al the men of Israel.	24 David andò al Campo, e Assalonne passò il Giordano con tutti gli uomini d'Israele.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in place of Joab. This Amasa was the son of aman cal ed Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Zeruiah, mother ofJoab.	25 Assalonne mise a capo dell'esercito, al posto di Gioab, Amasa, il quale era figlio di un uomo di Iezrael chiamato Ietra e che era entrato da Abigail figlia di Naas, sorella di quella Sarvia che fu madre di Gioab.
26 Israel and Absalom pitched their camp in the territory of Gilead.	26 Israele con Assalonne pose il campo nella terra di Galaad.
27 When David reached Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites, Machir sonof Ammiel from Lo-Debar, and Barzil ai the Gileadite from Rogelim	27 Or quando David giunse al Campo, Sobi, figlio di Naas, di Rabbat dei figli d'Ammon, Machir, figlio di Ammihel di Lodabar, e Berzellai, Galaadita di Rogeim,
28 brought bedding, rugs, bowls and crockery; and wheat, barley, meal, roasted grain, beans, lentils,	28 gli offrirono dei letti, dei tappeti, dei vasi di terra, del grano, dell'orzo, della farina, del grano arrostito, delle fave, delle lenticchie, dei ceci tostati,
29 honey, curds and cows' cheese and sheep's cheese, which they presented to David and the peoplewith him for them to eat. 'The army', they said, 'must have been hungry, tired and thirsty in the desert.'	29 del miele, del burro, delle pecore, dei vitelli grassi; li diedero a David e alla gente che era con lui perchè ne mangiassero, temendo che il popolo si stancasse per la fame e per la sete nel deserto.
