2 Samuel 17

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Let me choose twelve thousand men and set off this very night in pursuitof David.	1 Ahitophel dit à Absalom: "Laisse-moi choisir 12.000 hommes et me lancer, cette nuit même, à lapoursuite de David.
2 I shal fal on him while he is tired and dispirited; I shal strike terror into him, and al the people whoare with him wil run away. I shal kil only the king,	2 Je tomberai sur lui quand il sera fatigué et sans courage, je l'épouvanterai et tout le peuple qui estavec lui prendra la fuite. Alors je frapperai le roi seul
3 and I shal then bring al the people back to you, like a bride returning to her husband. You seek thelife of one individual only; the people as a whole wil have peace.'	3 et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple, comme la fiancée revient à son époux: tu n'en veux qu'à la vied'un seul homme et tout le peuple sera sauf."
4 The suggestion seemed a good one to Absalom and all the elders of Israel.	4 La proposition plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d'Israël.
5 Then Absalom said, 'Now cal Hushai the Archite, for us to hear what he too has to say.'	5 Cependant Absalom dit: "Appelez encore Hushaï l'Arkite, que nous entendions ce qu'il a à direlui aussi."
6 When Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom said, 'This is what Ahithophel says. Are we to do as hesuggests? If not, suggest something yourself.'	6 Hushaï arriva auprès d'Absalom, et Absalom lui dit: "Ahitophel a parlé de telle manière. Devons-nous faire ce qu'il a dit? Sinon, parle toi-même."
7 Hushai said to Absalom, 'On this occasion the advice given by Ahithophel is not good.	7 Hushaï répondit à Absalom: "Pour cette fois le conseil qu'a donné Ahitophel n'est pas bon."
8 You know', Hushai went on, 'that your father and his men are great fighters and that they are now asangry as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is a man of war: he wil not let the army rest during thenight.	8 Et Hushaï poursuivit: "Tu sais que ton père et ses gens sont des preux et qu'ils sont exaspérés,comme une ourse sauvage à qui on a ravi ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre, il ne laissera pas l'arméese reposer la nuit.
9 At this moment he is concealed in some hol ow or other place. If at the outset there are casualtiesamong our troops, word will go round that the army supporting Absalom has met with disaster.	9 Il se cache maintenant dans quelque creux ou dans quelque place. Si, dès l'abord, il y a desvictimes dans notre troupe, la rumeur se répandra d'un désastre dans l'armée qui suit Absalom.
10 And then even the valiant, the truly lion-hearted, will be demoralised; for al Israel knows that yourfather is a champion and that the men with him are valiant.	10 Alors même le brave qui a un coeur semblable à celui du lion perdra courage, car tout Israël saitque ton père est un preux et que ceux qui l'accompagnent sont braves.
11 For my part, I offer this advice: Summon al Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, to ral y to you, asnumerous as the sand on the seashore, and you take the field in person with them.	11 Pour moi, je donne le conseil suivant: que tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée, serassemble autour de toi, aussi nombreux que les grains de sable au bord de la mer, et tu marcheras en personneau milieu d'eux.
12 We shall reach him wherever he is to be found; we shal fal on him as the dew fal s on the ground,and not leave him or any one of the men with him.	12 Nous l'atteindrons en quelque lieu qu'il se trouve, nous nous abattrons sur lui comme la roséetombe sur le sol et nous ne laisserons subsister ni lui ni personne de tous les hommes qui l'accompagnent.
13 Should he retire into a town, all Israel will bring ropes to that town, and we shal drag it into the river-bed until not a pebble of it is to be found.'	13 Que s'il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël apportera des cordes à cette ville et nous la traîneronsau torrent, jusqu'à ce qu'on n'en trouve plus un caillou."
14 Then Absalom and al the people of Israel said, 'Hushai the Arkite's advice is better thanAhithophel's,' Yahweh having resolved to thwart Ahithophel's shrewd advice and so bring disaster on Absalom.	14 Absalom et tous les gens d'Israël dirent: "Le conseil de Hushaï l'Arkite est meilleur que celuid'Ahitophel." Yahvé avait décidé de faire échouer le plan habile d'Ahitophel, afin d'amener le malheur surAbsalom.
15 Hushai then told the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Ahithophel gave such and such advice to Absalomand the elders of Israel, but I advised so and so.	15 Hushaï dit alors aux prêtres Sadoq et Ebyatar: "Ahitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom etaux anciens d'Israël, mais c'est telle et telle chose que moi, j'ai conseillée.
16 Send with al speed to David and say, "Do not camp in the desert passes tonight, but get throughthem as fast as you can, or the king and his whole army may be annihilated." '	16 Maintenant, envoyez vite avertir David et dites-lui: Ne bivouaque pas cette nuit dans les passesdu désert, mais traverse d'urgence de l'autre côté, de crainte que ne soient anéantis le roi et toute l'armée quil'accompagne."
17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were posted at the Fuller's Spring; a servant-girl was to go and warn themand they in turn were to warn King David, since they could not give themselves away by coming into the citythemselves.	17 Yehonatân et Ahimaaç étaient postés à la source du Foulon: une servante viendrait les avertir eteux-mêmes iraient avertir le roi David, car ils ne pouvaient pas se découvrir en entrant dans la ville.
18 A young man saw them nonetheless and told Absalom. The pair of them, however, made off quickly,reaching the house of a man in Bahurim. In his courtyard was a storage-wel and they got down into it.	18 Mais un jeune homme les aperçut et porta la nouvelle à Absalom. Alors ils partirent tous deuxen hâte et arrivèrent à la maison d'un homme de Bahurim. Il y avait dans sa cour une citerne où ils descendirent.
19 The woman took a piece of canvas and, spreading it over the mouth of the storage-wel , scatteredcrushed grain on it so that nothing showed.	19 La femme prit une bâche, elle l'étendit sur la bouche de la citerne et étala dessus du grainconcassé, de sorte qu'on ne remarquait rien.
20 When Absalom's servants reached the woman at the house, they said, 'Where are Ahimaaz andJonathan?' The woman said, 'They have gone further on, towards the water.' They searched but, having foundnothing, went back to Jerusalem.	20 Les serviteurs d'Absalom entrèrent chez cette femme dans la maison et demandèrent: "Où sontAhimaaç et Yehonatân", et la femme leur répondit: "Ils ont passé outre allant d'ici vers l'eau." Ils cherchèrent et,ne trouvant rien, revinrent à Jérusalem.
21 When they had gone, the men climbed out of the storage-wel and went to warn King David. 'Set out!'they told David. 'Cross the water quickly, for Ahithophel has given such and such advice against you!'	21 Après leur départ, Ahimaaç et Yehonatân remontèrent de la citerne et allèrent avertir le roiDavid: "Mettez-vous en route et hâtez-vous de passer l'eau, car voilà le conseil qu'Ahitophel a donné à votrepropos."
22 So David and al the troops with him set off and crossed the Jordan. By dawn no one was left, al hadcrossed the Jordan.	22 David et toute l'armée qui l'accompagnait se mirent donc en route et passèrent le Jourdain; àl'aube, il ne manquait personne qui n'eût passé le Jourdain.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set off andwent home to his own town. Then, having set his house in order, he hanged himself. He was buried in hisfather's tomb.	23 Quant à Ahitophel, lorsqu'il vit que son conseil n'était pas suivi, il sella son âne et se mit enroute pour aller chez lui dans sa ville. Il mit ordre à sa maison, puis il s'étrangla et mourut. On l'ensevelit dans letombeau de son père.
24 David had reached Mahanaim by the time that Absalom crossed the Jordan with al the men of Israel.	24 David était arrivé à Mahanayim lorsqu'Absalom franchit le Jourdain avec tous les hommesd'Israël.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in place of Joab. This Amasa was the son of aman cal ed Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Zeruiah, mother ofJoab.	25 Absalom avait mis Amasa à la tête de l'armée à la place de Joab. Or Amasa était le fils d'unhomme qui s'appelait Yitra l'Ismaélite et qui s'était uni à Abigayil, fille de Jessé et soeur de Ceruya, la mère deJoab.
26 Israel and Absalom pitched their camp in the territory of Gilead.	26 Israël et Absalom dressèrent leur camp au pays de Galaad.
27 When David reached Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites, Machir sonof Ammiel from Lo-Debar, and Barzil ai the Gileadite from Rogelim	27 Lorsque David arriva à Mahanayim, Shobi, fils de Nahash, de Rabba des Ammonites, Makir,fils d'Ammiel, de Lo-Debar, et Barzillaï le Galaadite, de Roglim,
28 brought bedding, rugs, bowls and crockery; and wheat, barley, meal, roasted grain, beans, lentils,	28 apportèrent des matelas de lit, des tapis, des coupes et de la vaisselle. Il y avait du froment, del'orge, de la farine, du grain grillé, des fèves, des lentilles,
29 honey, curds and cows' cheese and sheep's cheese, which they presented to David and the peoplewith him for them to eat. 'The army', they said, 'must have been hungry, tired and thirsty in the desert.'	29 du miel, du lait caillé et des fromages de vache et de brebis, qu'ils offrirent à David et au peuplequi l'accompagnait pour qu'ils s'en nourrissent. En effet, ils s'étaient dit: "L'armée a souffert de la faim, de lafatigue et de la soif dans le désert."
