1 Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Let me choose twelve thousand men and set off this very night in pursuitof David.	1 Ahitofel dit à Absalom: “Permets que je choisisse 12 000 hommes, je veux aller poursuivre David cette nuit-même.
2 I shal fal on him while he is tired and dispirited; I shal strike terror into him, and al the people whoare with him wil run away. I shal kil only the king,	2 Je l’attaquerai alors qu’il est fatigué et qu’il a les mains lasses, je jetterai la panique dans tout le peuple et le peuple s’enfuira. Alors il me suffira d’abattre le roi
3 and I shal then bring al the people back to you, like a bride returning to her husband. You seek thelife of one individual only; the people as a whole wil have peace.'	3 et je te ramènerai tout le peuple, comme une fiancée revient vers son époux. Il ne te faut que la vie d’un homme, que tout le peuple soit en paix.”
4 The suggestion seemed a good one to Absalom and all the elders of Israel.	4 La chose parut bonne aux yeux d’Absalom et aux yeux de tous les anciens d’Israël.
5 Then Absalom said, 'Now cal Hushai the Archite, for us to hear what he too has to say.'	5 Absalom dit alors: “Appelez aussi Houchaï l’Arkite, pour que nous entendions son avis.”
6 When Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom said, 'This is what Ahithophel says. Are we to do as hesuggests? If not, suggest something yourself.'	6 Houchaï s’approcha d’Absalom et Absalom lui dit ceci: “Ahitofel a donné son avis. Devons-nous le suivre? Sinon, donne-nous ton avis.”
7 Hushai said to Absalom, 'On this occasion the advice given by Ahithophel is not good.	7 Houchaï répondit à Absalom: “Pour une fois le conseil d’Ahitofel n’est pas bon.”
8 You know', Hushai went on, 'that your father and his men are great fighters and that they are now asangry as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is a man of war: he wil not let the army rest during thenight.	8 Houchaï ajouta: “Tu sais que ton père et ses compagnons sont courageux, ils sont enragés comme une ourse en liberté à qui on a enlevé ses petits, ou comme la truie sauvage dans les champs. Ton père est un homme de guerre, il ne laissera pas l’armée fermer l’œil;
9 At this moment he is concealed in some hol ow or other place. If at the outset there are casualtiesamong our troops, word will go round that the army supporting Absalom has met with disaster.	9 en ce moment il est sûrement caché dans quelque grotte ou dans quelque autre lieu. Si les nôtres ont des pertes dès le début, il y aura des rumeurs et l’on dira: L’armée d’Absalom a subi une défaite.
10 And then even the valiant, the truly lion-hearted, will be demoralised; for al Israel knows that yourfather is a champion and that the men with him are valiant.	10 Alors, même les plus braves, ceux qui ont un cœur de lion, se décourageront. “Tout Israël le sait bien, ton père est brave et tous ceux qui sont avec lui sont des hommes courageux.
11 For my part, I offer this advice: Summon al Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, to ral y to you, asnumerous as the sand on the seashore, and you take the field in person with them.	11 C’est pourquoi voici mon conseil: Que tout Israël se rassemble autour de toi, de Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, aussi nombreux que les grains de sable au bord de la mer, et toi, tu marcheras en personne au milieu d’eux.
12 We shall reach him wherever he is to be found; we shal fal on him as the dew fal s on the ground,and not leave him or any one of the men with him.	12 Nous arriverons sur lui en quelque lieu où il se trouve, nous nous poserons sur eux comme la rosée tombe sur le sol et nous ne laisserons en vie ni lui ni aucun de ses compagnons.
13 Should he retire into a town, all Israel will bring ropes to that town, and we shal drag it into the river-bed until not a pebble of it is to be found.'	13 S’il s’enferme dans une ville, tout Israël apportera des cordes pour tirer cette ville jusqu’au torrent, au point que l’on n’y trouvera plus même un caillou.”
14 Then Absalom and al the people of Israel said, 'Hushai the Arkite's advice is better thanAhithophel's,' Yahweh having resolved to thwart Ahithophel's shrewd advice and so bring disaster on Absalom.	14 Absalom et tous les gens d’Israël s’écrièrent: “Le conseil de Houchaï l’Arkite est meilleur que celui d’Ahitofel.” C’est que Yahvé avait décidé de faire échouer le conseil d’Ahitofel, qui était le bon; Yahvé voulait amener le malheur sur Absalom.
15 Hushai then told the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Ahithophel gave such and such advice to Absalomand the elders of Israel, but I advised so and so.	15 Houchaï dit alors aux prêtres Sadoq et Ébyatar: “Ahitofel a donné ce conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d’Israël, mais moi, voilà ce que je leur ai conseillé.
16 Send with al speed to David and say, "Do not camp in the desert passes tonight, but get throughthem as fast as you can, or the king and his whole army may be annihilated." '	16 Maintenant allez vite prévenir David. Dites-lui: ‘Ne t’attarde pas cette nuit dans les défilés du désert. Dépêche-toi de traverser, sinon le roi et toute l’armée seront anéantis.’ ”
17 Jonathan and Ahimaaz were posted at the Fuller's Spring; a servant-girl was to go and warn themand they in turn were to warn King David, since they could not give themselves away by coming into the citythemselves.	17 Yonathan et Ahimaas étaient postés près de la source du Foulon. Une servante devait les prévenir pour qu’ils aillent porter la nouvelle au roi, car ils ne voulaient pas entrer en ville et se faire voir.
18 A young man saw them nonetheless and told Absalom. The pair of them, however, made off quickly,reaching the house of a man in Bahurim. In his courtyard was a storage-wel and they got down into it.	18 Mais un jeune homme les vit et il informa Absalom. Alors ils s’enfuirent tous les deux et se réfugièrent chez un homme de Bahourim. Dans la cour il y avait une citerne où ils s’enfermèrent.
19 The woman took a piece of canvas and, spreading it over the mouth of the storage-wel , scatteredcrushed grain on it so that nothing showed.	19 La femme prit une bâche, elle l’étendit sur l’ouverture de la citerne et étala dessus du grain, si bien que l’on ne voyait plus rien.
20 When Absalom's servants reached the woman at the house, they said, 'Where are Ahimaaz andJonathan?' The woman said, 'They have gone further on, towards the water.' They searched but, having foundnothing, went back to Jerusalem.	20 Les serviteurs d’Absalom arrivèrent chez cette femme et lui demandèrent: “Où sont Ahimaas et Yonathan?” La femme leur répondit: “Ils ont continué leur route vers le Jourdain.” Ils cherchèrent et, ne trouvant rien, ils revinrent à Jérusalem.
21 When they had gone, the men climbed out of the storage-wel and went to warn King David. 'Set out!'they told David. 'Cross the water quickly, for Ahithophel has given such and such advice against you!'	21 Après leur départ, Ahimaas et Yonathan sortirent de la citerne et allèrent prévenir le roi David: “Mettez-vous en route, dépêchez-vous de traverser, car voilà le conseil qu’Ahitofel a donné à votre sujet.”
22 So David and al the troops with him set off and crossed the Jordan. By dawn no one was left, al hadcrossed the Jordan.	22 David et toute l’armée qui l’accompagnait se mirent donc en route, ils passèrent le Jourdain et à l’aube tout le monde avait traversé le Jourdain.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set off andwent home to his own town. Then, having set his house in order, he hanged himself. He was buried in hisfather's tomb.	23 Lorsque Ahitofel vit que son conseil n’était pas suivi, il sella son âne et rentra chez lui dans sa ville, il mit de l’ordre dans sa maison et se pendit. C’est ainsi qu’il mourut et on l’enterra dans le tombeau de son père.
24 David had reached Mahanaim by the time that Absalom crossed the Jordan with al the men of Israel.	24 David arriva à Mahanayim tandis qu’Absalom franchissait le Jourdain avec tous les Israélites.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in place of Joab. This Amasa was the son of aman cal ed Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Zeruiah, mother ofJoab.	25 Absalom avait mis Amasa à la tête de l’armée à la place de Joab. (Amasa était fils de Yitra l’Ismaélite: cet homme s’était uni à Abigayil, fille de Jessé et sœur de Sérouya, la mère de Joab).
26 Israel and Absalom pitched their camp in the territory of Gilead.	26 Israël et Absalom établirent leur camp dans le pays de Galaad.
27 When David reached Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites, Machir sonof Ammiel from Lo-Debar, and Barzil ai the Gileadite from Rogelim	27 Lorsque David arriva à Mahanayim, Chobi, fils de Nahach, de Rabba des Ammonites, Makir, fils d’Ammiel de Lo-Débar, et Barzillaï de Roglim en Galaad
28 brought bedding, rugs, bowls and crockery; and wheat, barley, meal, roasted grain, beans, lentils,	28 apportèrent des paillasses, des tapis, des coupes et de la vaisselle. Ils apportèrent aussi du blé et de l’orge, de la farine, des grains grillés, des fèves et des lentilles,
29 honey, curds and cows' cheese and sheep's cheese, which they presented to David and the peoplewith him for them to eat. 'The army', they said, 'must have been hungry, tired and thirsty in the desert.'	29 du miel et du lait caillé, des fromages de brebis et de vache, pour la nourriture de David et du peuple qui l’accompagnait. Ils s’étaient dit en effet: “Après la marche dans le désert, ce peuple doit être fatigué, il a faim et il a soif.”
