1 Yahweh sent the prophet Nathan to David. He came to him and said: In the same town were two men,one rich, the other poor.	1 Il Signore mandò a David Natan, il quale, andato, gli disse: « In una città v'erano due uomini, uno ricco e l'altro povero.
2 The rich man had flocks and herds in great abundance;	2 Il ricco aveva pecore e buoi in gran quantità;
3 the poor man had nothing but a ewe lamb, only a single little one which he had bought. He fostered itand it grew up with him and his children, eating his bread, drinking from his cup, sleeping in his arms; it was likea daughter to him.	3 il povero non aveva altro che una piccola pecora, che egli aveva comprata e allevata, e che era cresciuta presso di lui insieme ai suoi figli, mangiando del suo pane, bevendo della sua coppa, e dormendo nel suo seno: era per lui come una figlia.
4 When a traveller came to stay, the rich man would not take anything from his own flock or herd toprovide for the wayfarer who had come to him. Instead, he stole the poor man's lamb and prepared that for hisguest.	4 Ora il ricco, essendo andato da lui un pellegrino, per fargli un banchetto non prese le sue pecore e i suoi buoi, ma andò a prendere la pecora del povero e preparò dei cibi per l'uomo che era venuto da lui ».
5 David flew into a great rage with the man. 'As Yahweh lives,' he said to Nathan 'the man who did thisdeserves to die.	5 David, altamente sdegnato contro un tal uomo, disse a Natan: « Viva il Signore! E' degno di morte chi ha fatto questo.
6 For doing such a thing and for having shown no pity, he shal make fourfold restitution for the lamb.'	6 Renderà la pecora al quadruplo, per aver fatta tal cosa ed avere agito senza pietà ».
7 Nathan then said to David, 'You are the man! Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I anointed you king ofIsrael, I saved you from Saul's clutches,	7 Allora Natan disse a David: « Quell'uomo sei tu. Ecco ciò che dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Io ti unsi re sopra Israele; io ti salvai dalla mano di Saul,
8 I gave you your master's household and your master's wives into your arms, I gave you the House ofIsrael and the House of Judah; and, if this is stil too little, I shal give you other things as wel .	8 ti diedi la casa del tuo signore, e in seno le mogli del tuo signore; io ti diedi la casa d'Israele e di Giuda; e, se questo è poco, vi avrei aggiunto cose molto maggiori;
9 Why did you show contempt for Yahweh, by doing what displeases him? You put Uriah the Hittite tothe sword, you took his wife to be your wife, causing his death by the sword of the Ammonites.	9 ma tu, perchè hai disprezzata la parola del Signore, facendo il male nel mio cospetto? Tu hai ucciso di spada Uria l'Eteo, tu ti sei presa per tua moglie la moglie sua, e l'hai ucciso colla spada dei figli d'Ammon.
10 For this, your household wil never be free of the sword, since you showed contempt for me and tookthe wife of Uriah the Hittite, to make her your wife."	10 Or dunque, la spada non si allontanerà giammai dalla tua casa, perchè tu mi hai disprezzato ed hai presa la moglie di Uria l'Eteo, per farla tua moglie.
11 'Yahweh says this, "Out of your own household I shal raise misfortune for you. Before your very eyesI shal take your wives and give them to your neighbour, who wil lie with your wives in broad daylight.	11 Così parla il Signore: Ecco che io farò sorgere sopra di te il male dalla tua casa, io prenderò sotto i tuoi occhi le tue mogli e le darò ad un tuo vicino, il quale dormirà colle tue mogli in faccia a questo sole.
12 You have worked in secret, but I shall work this for al Israel to see, in broad daylight." '	12 Tu hai agito in segreto; ma io compirò queste parole al cospetto di tutto Israele, e al cospetto del sole ».
13 David said to Nathan, 'I have sinned against Yahweh.' Nathan then said to David, 'Yahweh, for hispart, forgives your sin; you are not to die.	13 David disse a Natan: « Ho peccato contro il Signore ». Natan disse a David: « Il Signore ha perdonato il tuo peccato: tu non morrai;
14 But, since you have outraged Yahweh by doing this, the child born to you wil die.'	14 ma siccome hai fatto bestemmiare i nemici del Signore con tale azione, il figlio che ti è nato morrà senza dubbio ».
15 And Nathan went home. Yahweh struck the child which Uriah's wife had borne to David and it felgravely il .	15 Natan tornò a casa sua. Il Signore poi percosse il bambino che la moglie di Uria aveva partorito a David, e non vi fu più speranza per lui.
16 David pleaded with Yahweh for the child; he kept a strict fast and went home and spent the nightlying on the ground, covered with sacking.	16 David pregò il Signore per il bambino, digiunò rigorosamente, stette ritirato a giacere per terra.
17 The officials of his household stood round him, intending to get him off the ground, but he refused,nor would he take food with them.	17 Gli anziani di casa sua andarono per farlo levare da terra; ma egli non diè ascolto e non prese il cibo con loro.
18 On the seventh day the child died. David's retinue were afraid to tel him that the child was dead.'Even when the child was alive', they thought, 'we reasoned with him and he would not listen to us. How can wetel him that the child is dead? He wil do something desperate.'	18 Dopo sette giorni il bambino morì; e i servi di David non avevano coraggio d'annunziargli che il bambino era morto, perchè dicevano: « Se non ci dava ascolto quando gli si parlava essendo ancora in vita il bambino, quanto più s'affliggerà ora, se andiamo a dirgli che il bambino è morto? »
19 David, however, noticed that his retinue were whispering among themselves, and realised that thechild was dead. 'Is the child dead?' he asked the officers. They replied, 'He is dead.'	19 Ma David vedendo che i suoi servi parlavano sotto voce, comprese che il bambino era morto, e disse ai suoi servi: « E' forse morto il bambino? » Essi risposero: « E' morto ».
20 David got off the ground, bathed and anointed himself and put on fresh clothes. Then he went intoYahweh's sanctuary and prostrated himself. On returning to his house, he asked to be served with food and ateit.	20 Allora David si alzò da terra, si lavò, si unse, e mutate le vesti, entrò nella casa del Signore, ove adorò. Tornato poi a casa sua, chiese che gli portassero da mangiare, e mangiò.
21 His retinue said, 'Why are you acting like this? When the child was alive, you fasted and wept; nowthat the child is dead, you get up and take food!'	21 I suoi servi gli dissero: « Come mai hai agito in questa maniera? Quando il bambino era ancor vivo, tu hai digiunato e pianto, dopo che è morto, ti sei alzato ed hai mangiato ».
22 'When the child was alive', he replied, 'I fasted and wept because I kept thinking, "Who knows?Perhaps Yahweh wil take pity on me and the child wil live."	22 David disse: « Ho digiunato e pianto pel bambino mentre era vivo, perchè io dicevo: Chi sa? Forse il Signore me lo renderà; il fanciullo potrà vivere.
23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shal go to him but hecannot come back to me.'	23 Ma ora che il fanciullo è morto, perchè dovrei digiunare? Potrò forse farlo ritornare di nuovo? E più facile che io vada dov'è lui; ma egli non tornerà a me ».
24 David consoled his wife Bathsheba. He went to her and slept with her. She conceived and gave birthto a son, whom she called Solomon. Yahweh loved him	24 David consolò Betsabea sua moglie, andò a dormire con lei, ed essa ebbe un figlio al quale pose nome Salomone. Il Signore l'amò
25 and made this known by means of the prophet Nathan, who named him Jedidiah, as Yahweh hadinstructed.	25 e dando gli ordini per mezzo di Natan profeta, lo chiamò Amabile al Signore, perchè il Signore lo amava.
26 Joab assaulted Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites and captured the royal town.	26 Intanto Gioab combatteva contro Rabbat dei figli d'Ammon. Stando per attaccare la città reale.
27 He then sent messengers to tel David, 'I have assaulted Rabbah and captured the water supply.	27 Gioab spedì dei messi a David, dicendo: « Ho combattuto contro Rabbat, e la Città dell'acque deve esser presa;

29 So David mustered the whole army and marched on Rabbah; he assaulted the town and captured it.	29 David allora adunò tutto il popolo, andò contro Rabbat, l'attaccò e la prese.
30 He took the crown off Milcom's head; it weighed one talent of gold, and in it was set a precious stonewhich went on David's head instead. He carried off great quantities of booty from the town.'	30 Tolse dal capo del loro re il diadema, che pesava un talento d'oro e aveva gemme preziosissime. Questo fu posto sul capo di David. 31 And he expel ed its inhabitants, setting them to work with saws, iron picks and iron axes, employingthem at brickmaking. He treated all the Ammonite towns in the same way. David and the whole army returned toJerusalem.	31 Ne condusse via gli abitanti e li fece segare, fece passare sopra di loro dei carri ferrati, li tagliò a pezzi con coltelli, li gettò in fornaci da mattoni. Così trattò tutte le città dei figli d'Ammon. Poi David tornò con tutto l'esercito a Gerusalemme.
