1 Yahweh sent the prophet Nathan to David. He came to him and said: In the same town were two men,one rich, the other poor.	1 Yahvé envoya donc à David le prophète Nathan. Il entra et lui dit: “Il y avait dans une ville deux hommes, l’un était riche, l’autre était pauvre.
2 The rich man had flocks and herds in great abundance;	2 Le riche avait beaucoup de petit et de gros bétail,
3 the poor man had nothing but a ewe lamb, only a single little one which he had bought. He fostered itand it grew up with him and his children, eating his bread, drinking from his cup, sleeping in his arms; it was likea daughter to him.	3 le pauvre n’avait qu’une seule brebis qu’il avait achetée. Il la nourrissait, elle grandissait à côté de lui avec ses fils, elle mangeait de son pain, buvait dans sa coupe et dormait sur son sein: elle était pour lui comme une fille.
4 When a traveller came to stay, the rich man would not take anything from his own flock or herd toprovide for the wayfarer who had come to him. Instead, he stole the poor man's lamb and prepared that for hisguest.	4 “Un jour l’homme riche reçut une visite. Comme il ne voulait pas prendre sur son petit ou sur son gros bétail pour préparer un repas au voyageur qui lui arrivait, il vola la brebis du pauvre et la prépara pour son visiteur.”
5 David flew into a great rage with the man. 'As Yahweh lives,' he said to Nathan 'the man who did thisdeserves to die.	5 David entra dans une grande colère contre cet homme et dit à Nathan: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, l’homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort.
6 For doing such a thing and for having shown no pity, he shal make fourfold restitution for the lamb.'	6 Il remboursera quatre fois la brebis pour avoir commis une telle action et n’avoir pas eu de pitié.”
7 Nathan then said to David, 'You are the man! Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I anointed you king ofIsrael, I saved you from Saul's clutches,	7 Alors Nathan dit à David: “Cet homme, c’est toi! “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: Je t’avais consacré comme roi d’Israël, je t’avais délivré de la main de Saül,
8 I gave you your master's household and your master's wives into your arms, I gave you the House ofIsrael and the House of Judah; and, if this is stil too little, I shal give you other things as wel .	8 je t’avais donné la maison de ton seigneur et les femmes de ton seigneur, je t’avais donné la maison d’Israël et celle de Juda, et si ce n’était pas assez, j’aurais fait encore bien plus.
9 Why did you show contempt for Yahweh, by doing what displeases him? You put Uriah the Hittite tothe sword, you took his wife to be your wife, causing his death by the sword of the Ammonites.	9 Pourquoi donc as-tu méprisé la parole de Yahvé? Pourquoi as-tu fait cette chose si mauvaise à ses yeux, de frapper par l’épée Urie le Hittite? Tu as pris pour toi sa femme, et lui, tu l’as tué par l’épée des Ammonites.
10 For this, your household wil never be free of the sword, since you showed contempt for me and tookthe wife of Uriah the Hittite, to make her your wife."	10 Pour cela, l’épée désormais ne s’écartera plus de ta maison, parce que tu m’as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d’Urie le Hittite pour en faire ta propre femme.
11 'Yahweh says this, "Out of your own household I shal raise misfortune for you. Before your very eyesI shal take your wives and give them to your neighbour, who wil lie with your wives in broad daylight.	11 “Voici ce que dit Yahvé: De ta propre maison, je ferai venir sur toi le malheur, je prendrai tes femmes sous tes yeux, et je les donnerai à ton prochain, il couchera avec tes femmes à la vue du soleil.
12 You have worked in secret, but I shall work this for al Israel to see, in broad daylight." '	12 Toi, tu as agi dans le secret, mais moi, j’accomplirai cela à la face de tout Israël, à la face du soleil.”
13 David said to Nathan, 'I have sinned against Yahweh.' Nathan then said to David, 'Yahweh, for hispart, forgives your sin; you are not to die.	13 David répondit à Nathan: “J’ai péché contre Yahvé!” Nathan dit alors à David: “Voici que Yahvé efface ton péché, tu ne mourras pas.
14 But, since you have outraged Yahweh by doing this, the child born to you wil die.'	14 Cependant, parce que tu as méprisé Yahvé dans cette affaire, le fils qui t’est né mourra.”
15 And Nathan went home. Yahweh struck the child which Uriah's wife had borne to David and it felgravely il .	15 Dans le même temps où Nathan s’en retournait chez lui, Yahvé frappa l’enfant que la femme d’Urie avait donné à David: il tomba malade.
16 David pleaded with Yahweh for the child; he kept a strict fast and went home and spent the nightlying on the ground, covered with sacking.	16 David supplia Dieu pour son garçon, il refusa toute nourriture et, quand il rentra chez lui, il dormit sur le sol.
17 The officials of his household stood round him, intending to get him off the ground, but he refused,nor would he take food with them.	17 Les anciens de sa maison insistèrent auprès de lui pour qu’il se lève, mais il refusa et ne prit aucune nourriture avec eux.
18 On the seventh day the child died. David's retinue were afraid to tel him that the child was dead.'Even when the child was alive', they thought, 'we reasoned with him and he would not listen to us. How can wetel him that the child is dead? He wil do something desperate.'	18 Le septième jour l’enfant mourut. Les serviteurs de David n’osaient pas lui annoncer la nouvelle, ils se disaient: “Lorsque l’enfant était encore en vie, nous lui avons parlé et il refusait de nous entendre. Que fera-t-il lorsque nous lui annoncerons que l’enfant est mort?”
19 David, however, noticed that his retinue were whispering among themselves, and realised that thechild was dead. 'Is the child dead?' he asked the officers. They replied, 'He is dead.'	19 David s’aperçut que ses serviteurs chuchotaient entre eux: il comprit que l’enfant était mort et il dit à ses serviteurs: “L’enfant est donc mort?” Ils répondirent: “Oui, il est mort.”
20 David got off the ground, bathed and anointed himself and put on fresh clothes. Then he went intoYahweh's sanctuary and prostrated himself. On returning to his house, he asked to be served with food and ateit.	20 Alors David se leva, se baigna, se parfuma et changea de vêtements. Il entra dans la Maison de Yahvé où il se prosterna, puis il revint chez lui et demanda qu’on lui serve un repas: il mangea.
21 His retinue said, 'Why are you acting like this? When the child was alive, you fasted and wept; nowthat the child is dead, you get up and take food!'	21 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: “Que fais-tu là? Lorsque l’enfant était vivant, tu jeûnais, tu pleurais, et maintenant que l’enfant est mort, tu te lèves et tu manges.”
22 'When the child was alive', he replied, 'I fasted and wept because I kept thinking, "Who knows?Perhaps Yahweh wil take pity on me and the child wil live."	22 Il répondit: “Lorsque l’enfant était encore en vie, je jeûnais et je pleurais. Je me disais: Qui sait? Peut-être Yahvé aura-t-il pitié de moi et guérira-t-il l’enfant.
23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shal go to him but hecannot come back to me.'	23 Mais s’il est mort, pourquoi jeûner? Est-ce que je peux le faire revenir? C’est moi qui m’en irai vers lui, lui ne reviendra pas vers moi.”
24 David consoled his wife Bathsheba. He went to her and slept with her. She conceived and gave birthto a son, whom she called Solomon. Yahweh loved him	24 David consola sa femme Bethsabée, il alla la voir et coucha avec elle. Elle conçut et enfanta un fils auquel elle donna le nom de Salomon. Yahvé aima cet enfant,
25 and made this known by means of the prophet Nathan, who named him Jedidiah, as Yahweh hadinstructed.	25 il le fit savoir par le prophète Nathan qui le nomma Yédidya, comme Yahvé le demandait.
26 Joab assaulted Rabbah-of-the-Ammonites and captured the royal town.	26 Joab attaqua Rabba des Ammonites et s’empara de cette ville royale,
27 He then sent messengers to tel David, 'I have assaulted Rabbah and captured the water supply.	27 puis il envoya des messagers pour dire à David: “J’ai attaqué Rabba, je me suis même emparé de la ville basse.
28 So now muster the rest of the army, lay siege to the town and take it, or I wil take it and the town wilbe cal ed after me!'	28 Il est temps que tu rassembles le reste du peuple. Viens toi-même camper face à la ville et t’en emparer, ou sinon c’est moi qui vais la prendre et on l’appellera de mon nom.”
29 So David mustered the whole army and marched on Rabbah; he assaulted the town and captured it.	29 David rassembla donc tout le peuple et partit pour Rabba; il attaqua la ville et s’en empara.
30 He took the crown off Milcom's head; it weighed one talent of gold, and in it was set a precious stonewhich went on David's head instead. He carried off great quantities of booty from the town.'	30 Il enleva au dieu Milkom sa couronne qui pesait un talent d’or; elle portait une pierre précieuse qui se retrouva bientôt sur la tête de David. Il emporta un énorme butin.
31 And he expel ed its inhabitants, setting them to work with saws, iron picks and iron axes, employingthem at brickmaking. He treated all the Ammonite towns in the same way. David and the whole army returned toJerusalem.	31 Puis on déporta tous les habitants de la ville, on les mit à manier la scie, le pic ou la hache et on les employa au travail des briques. David fit ainsi pour toutes les villes des Ammonites, puis il retourna à Jérusalem avec toute l’armée.
