1 Saul was dead and David, returning after his victory over the Amalekites, had been at Ziklag for twodays.	1 Dopo la morte di Saul, David, ritornato dalla sconfìtta degli Amaleciti, se ne stava in Siceleg già da due giorni,
2 On the third day, a man arrived from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When hecame to David, he fel to the ground and prostrated himself.	2 quando, al terzo giorno, comparve un uomo che veniva dal campo di Saul, colla veste stracciata e il capo sparso di polvere. Appena giunto da David, si prostrò colla faccia per terra e adorò.
3 David asked him, 'Where have you come from?' 'I have escaped from the Israelite camp,' he said.	3 David gli disse: « Donde vieni? » Rispose: « Son fuggito dal campo d'Israele ».
4 David said, 'What has happened? Tell me.' He replied, 'The people fled from the battle, and many ofthem have fal en and are dead. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead too.'	4 E David a lui: « Che cosa è avvenuto? Dimmelo ». L'altro rispose: « Il popolo è fuggito dalla battaglia, sono caduti e morti molti del popolo, ed anche Saul e Gionata suo figlio son morti ».
5 Then David asked the young man who brought the news, 'How do you know that Saul and his sonJonathan are dead?'	5 David disse al giovane che gli raccontava tali cose: « Come sai tu che sia morto Saul e Gionata suo figlio? »
6 The young man replied, 'I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul, leaning on his spear,with the chariots and the cavalry bearing down on him.	6 E il giovane venuto ad annunziare tali cose disse: « Venni per caso sul monte Gelboe, mentre Saul stava chinato sulla sua lancia e i carri e i cavalieri s'avanzavano già vicini a lui.
7 Glancing behind him and seeing me, he shouted to me. I replied, "Here I am!"	7 Egli vedendomi nel voltarsi indietro, mi chiamò. Avendogli io risposto: Eccomi,
8 He said, "Who are you?" I replied, "I am an Amalekite."	8 egli mi disse: Chi sei tu? Gli rispondo: Sono un Amalecita.
9 He then said, "Come here and kil me. My head is swimming, although I still have al my strength."	9 Egli mi disse: Gettati sopra di me ed uccidimi; perchè sono oppresso dalle angoscie, e tutta la mia vita è ancora in me.
10 So I went over to him and killed him, because I knew that once he fel he could not survive. I then tookthe crown which he had on his head and the bracelet on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.'	10 Allora, gettandomi sopra di lui, l'uccisi, ben sapendo che non poteva vivere dopo tale disfatta, e, presi il diadema che aveva in capo, e i braccialetti che aveva al braccio, li ho portati qui a te, mio signore ».
11 David then took hold of his clothes and tore them, and all the men with him did the same.	11 Ma David, prese le sue vesti, le stracciò, e così fecero tutti gli uomini che eran con lui:
12 They mourned and wept and fasted until the evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, for the people ofYahweh and for the House of Israel, because they had fal en by the sword.	12 fecero lutto, piansero e digiunarono fino alla sera a causa di Saul, di Gionata suo figlio, del popolo del Signore, della casa d'Israele, perchè eran periti di spada.
13 David said to the young man who had brought the news, 'Where are you from?' He replied, 'I am theson of a resident foreigner, an Amalekite.'	13 Poi David disse al giovane che gli aveva recata la nuova: « Donde sei tu? » Ed egli rispose: « Son figlio d'un forestiero Amalecita ».
14 David said, 'How was it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed?'	14 E David a lui: « Perchè non hai temuto di stender la tua mano a uccidere l'unto del Signore? »
15 Then David called one of the young men. 'Come here,' he said, 'strike him down.' The man struck himand he died.	15 David, chiamato uno dei suoi servi, gli disse: « Avvicinati e uccidilo ». Percosso dal servo, morì.
16 David said, 'Your blood be on your own head. You convicted yourself out of your own mouth bysaying, "I kil ed Yahweh's anointed." '	16 E David gli disse: « Il tuo sangue sia sopra la tua testa; perchè la tua bocca ha parlato contro di te, quando hai detto: Io ho ucciso l'unto del Signore ».
17 David sang the fol owing lament over Saul and his son Jonathan	17 Allora David fece questo canto funebre sopra Saul e sopra Gionata suo figlio.
18 (it is for teaching archery to the children of Judah; it is written in the Book of the Just):	18 (E ordinò che s'insegnasse l'Arco ai figli di Giuda, com'è scritto nel Libro dei Giusti). E disse: « Pensa, o Israele, a coloro che son morti sulle tue alture, coperti di ferite.
19 Does the splendour of Israel lie dead on your heights? How did the heroes fal ?	19 Gli eroi, o Israele, sono stati uccisi sopra i tuoi monti. Come mai son caduti i forti?
20 Do not speak of it in Gath, nor broadcast it in the streets of Ashkelon, for fear the daughters of thePhilistines rejoice, for fear the daughters of the uncircumcised gloat.	20 Non l'annunziate a Get, non lo fate sapere sulle piazze d'Ascalona; chè non ne gioiscano le figlie dei Filistei, chè non ne tripudino le figlie degli incirconcisi.
21 You mountains of Gilboa, no dew, no rain fal on you, O treacherous fields where the heroes' shieldlies dishonoured! Not greased with oil, the shield of Saul,	21 O monti di Gelboe, non cada sopra voi nè rugiada nè pioggia, non vi siano campi di primizie; perchè su voi cadde a terra lo scudo dei forti, lo scudo di Saul, come se egli non fosse stato unto con olio.
22 but with the blood of wounded men, the fat of warriors! The bow of Jonathan never turned back, thesword of Saul never came home unsated!	22 Dal sangue degli uccisi, dal grasso dei valorosi, la freccia di Gionata non tornò mai indietro, e la spada di Saul non tornò mai a vuoto.
23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and handsome, were divided neither in life, nor in death. Swifter thaneagles were they, stronger than lions.	23 Saul e Gionata, gli amabili e belli nella vita, anche nella morte non sono stati separati. Eran più veloci delle aquile, più forti dei leoni.
24 O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul who gave you scarlet and fine linen to wear, who pinned goldenjewel ery on your dresses!	24 Figlie d'Israele, piangete sopra Saul, che vi vestiva di scarlatto nelle delizie, e vi dava l'oro per adomarvi.
25 How did the heroes fall in the thick of the battle? Jonathan, by your dying I too am stricken,	25 Come mai son caduti i forti nella battaglia? Come mai Gionata è stato ucciso sopra le tue alture?
26 I am desolate for you, Jonathan my brother. Very dear you were to me, your love more wonderful tome than the love of a woman.	26 Io piango sopra di te, o fratello mio Gionata, tanto bello, amabile oltre l'amore delle donne. Come una madre ama l'unico suo figlio, così io t'amava.
27 How did the heroes fall and the weapons of war succumb!	27 Come mai son caduti i forti e son perite le potenze della guerra? »
