1 Saul was dead and David, returning after his victory over the Amalekites, had been at Ziklag for twodays.	1 Or egli avvenne che essendo già morto Saul, David, disfatti gli Amaleciti, tornò a Siceleg, dove era da due giorni.
2 On the third day, a man arrived from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When hecame to David, he fel to the ground and prostrated himself.	2 Quando il terzo giorno comparve un uomo che veniva dal campo di Saul colla veste stracciata, col capo sparso di polvere, e accostatosi a David si prostrò colla faccia per terra, e lo adorò:
3 David asked him, 'Where have you come from?' 'I have escaped from the Israelite camp,' he said.	3 E David gli disse: Donde vieni? E quegli disse: Dal campo d’Israele sono fuggito.
4 David said, 'What has happened? Tell me.' He replied, 'The people fled from the battle, and many ofthem have fal en and are dead. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead too.'	4 E David disse a lui: Che è egli avvenuto? dimmelo. E quegli rispose: II popolo è fuggito dalla battaglia, e molti del popolo sono morti: e anche Saul, e Gionata suo figliuolo son morti.
5 Then David asked the young man who brought the news, 'How do you know that Saul and his sonJonathan are dead?'	5 E David disse a quel giovane, che raccontava tai cose: Come sai tu che sia morto Saul, e Gionata suo figliuolo?
6 The young man replied, 'I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul, leaning on his spear,with the chariots and the cavalry bearing down on him.	6 E quel giovane disse: Io era casualmente arrivato sul monte Gelboe, quando Saul si gettò sulla punta della sua lancia: e si appressavano de’ cocchi, e dei cavalieri.
7 Glancing behind him and seeing me, he shouted to me. I replied, "Here I am!"	7 E rivoltosi indietro, e vedendomi, mi chiamò. E avendogli io risposto: Eccomi:
8 He said, "Who are you?" I replied, "I am an Amalekite."	8 Disse egli a me: Chi sei tu? E io dico a lui: Sono un Amalecita.
9 He then said, "Come here and kil me. My head is swimming, although I still have al my strength."	9 Ed egli mi disse: Sta sopra di me, e uccidimi; perocché sono oppresso di affanno, e sono tuttora pieno di vita.
10 So I went over to him and killed him, because I knew that once he fel he could not survive. I then tookthe crown which he had on his head and the bracelet on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.'	10 E standogli sopra lo uccisi, ben sapendo come non potea vivere dopo tal rovina: e presi il diadema che avea in testa, e lo smaniglio che avea al suo braccio, e gli ho portati qua a te mio signore.
11 David then took hold of his clothes and tore them, and all the men with him did the same.	11 Ma David, prese le sue vesti, stracciolle, e (similmente) tutti quelli che eran con lui,
12 They mourned and wept and fasted until the evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, for the people ofYahweh and for the House of Israel, because they had fal en by the sword.	12 E si battevano il petto e piangevano, e digiunaron fino alla sera a causa di Saul, e di Gionata suo figliuolo, e del popolo del Signore, e della casa d'Israele, perchè eran periti di spada.
13 David said to the young man who had brought the news, 'Where are you from?' He replied, 'I am theson of a resident foreigner, an Amalekite.'	13 Disse poi David al giovane, che avagli recata la nuova: Ionde se' tu? E quegli rispose: Son figliuolo di un uomo forestiero Amalecita.
14 David said, 'How was it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed?'	14 E disse David: Come non hai avuto ribrezzo di stender la tua mano per uccidere il cristo del Signore?
15 Then David called one of the young men. 'Come here,' he said, 'strike him down.' The man struck himand he died.	15 E chiamato uno de' suoi servi, disse David: Vieni qua, gettati sopra costui. Ed ei gli diede il colpo, e colui morì.
16 David said, 'Your blood be on your own head. You convicted yourself out of your own mouth bysaying, "I kil ed Yahweh's anointed." '	16 E David disse a lui: II tuo sangue (sia) sulla tua testa; imperocché la tua bocca ti ha condannato, avendo tu detto: Io ho ucciso il cristo del Signore.
17 David sang the fol owing lament over Saul and his son Jonathan	17 E David fece questo cantico funebre sopra Saul, e sopra Gionata suo figliuolo.
18 (it is for teaching archery to the children of Judah; it is written in the Book of the Just):	18 E ordinò che s'insegnasse a' figliuoli di Giuda il cantico dell'arco come nel libro de’ Giusti sta scritto. Or egli disse: ripensa, o Israele, a coloro i quali delle lor ferite son morti sopra i tuoi colli.
19 Does the splendour of Israel lie dead on your heights? How did the heroes fal ?	19 Gli eroi d'Israele sono stati uccisi sopra i tuoi monti: come son eglino morti questi campioni?
20 Do not speak of it in Gath, nor broadcast it in the streets of Ashkelon, for fear the daughters of thePhilistines rejoice, for fear the daughters of the uncircumcised gloat.	20 Non si porti tal nuova a Geth, non si porti tal nuova nelle piazze di Ascalona: perchè non ne faccian festa le figliuole de’ Filistei, e non esultino le figlie degli incirconcisi.
21 You mountains of Gilboa, no dew, no rain fal on you, O treacherous fields where the heroes' shieldlies dishonoured! Not greased with oil, the shield of Saul,	21 Monti di Gelboe, nè rugiada, nè piova cada sopra di voi, nè campi abbiate, onde offerir si possano le primizie: perocché colà fu gittato per terra lo scudo dei forti, lo scudo di Saul, come se egli non fosse stato unto con olio.
22 but with the blood of wounded men, the fat of warriors! The bow of Jonathan never turned back, thesword of Saul never came home unsated!	22 Nel sangue degli uccisi, nelle grasse viscere dei valorosi non ha lasciato mai di saziarsi la freccia di Gionata: la spada di Saul non è mai rientrata nel fodero senza frutto.
23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and handsome, were divided neither in life, nor in death. Swifter thaneagles were they, stronger than lions.	23 Saul, e Gionata amabili, e gloriosi nella lor vita, più veloci dell'aquile, più forti de' leoni, non sono stati divisi neppur nella morte.
24 O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul who gave you scarlet and fine linen to wear, who pinned goldenjewel ery on your dresses!	24 Figlie d' Israele spargete lagrime sopra Saulle, il quale vi rivestiva di delicate vesti di scarlatto, e vi somministrava aurei fregi per adornarvi.
25 How did the heroes fall in the thick of the battle? Jonathan, by your dying I too am stricken,	25 Come mai son eglino caduti i forti nella battaglia? Come mai è stato ucciso Gionata sopra i tuoi monti?
26 I am desolate for you, Jonathan my brother. Very dear you were to me, your love more wonderful tome than the love of a woman.	26 Te io piango, o fratello mio, Gionata, bello oltre modo, e amabile più d'ogni amabil fanciulla. In quella guisa che la madre ama l'unico figlio, così io ti amava.
27 How did the heroes fall and the weapons of war succumb!	27 Come mai sono caduti i forti, e le loro armi guerriere si son perdute ?
