1 Saul was dead and David, returning after his victory over the Amalekites, had been at Ziklag for twodays.	1 - Dopo la morte di Saul, Davide, tornato dalla sconfitta degli Amaleciti, si fermò due giorni in Siceleg.
2 On the third day, a man arrived from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When hecame to David, he fel to the ground and prostrated himself.	2 Il terzo giorno arrivò un uomo, proveniente dal campo di Saul, colle vesti lacere e col capo sparso di polvere; accostatosi a Davide, si prostrò colla faccia per terra e l'adorò.
3 David asked him, 'Where have you come from?' 'I have escaped from the Israelite camp,' he said.	3 Davide gli domandò: «Donde vieni?». L'altro rispose: «Sono fuggito dal campo d'Israele».
4 David said, 'What has happened? Tell me.' He replied, 'The people fled from the battle, and many ofthem have fal en and are dead. Saul and his son Jonathan are dead too.'	4 E Davide gli chiese: «Che cosa è accaduto? Dimmelo». E quegli rispose: «Il popolo è fuggito dalla battaglia, molti del popolo sono caduti e morti, e lo stesso Saul e Gionata suo figliuolo son morti».
5 Then David asked the young man who brought the news, 'How do you know that Saul and his sonJonathan are dead?'	5 Davide disse al giovane che gli dava tali notizie: «Come sai tu che Saul e Gionata suo figliuolo sono morti?»,
6 The young man replied, 'I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul, leaning on his spear,with the chariots and the cavalry bearing down on him.	6 e il giovane che raccontava queste cose rispose: «Per caso ero arrivato sul monte di Gelboe e Saul si appoggiava sulla sua lancia, mentre s'appressavano a lui carri e cavalieri.
7 Glancing behind him and seeing me, he shouted to me. I replied, "Here I am!"	7 Voltosi indietro e vistomi mi chiamò; e avendogli io risposto: - Eccomi, -
8 He said, "Who are you?" I replied, "I am an Amalekite."	8 mi chiese: - Chi sei tu? - Gli risposi: - Sono un Amalecita, -
9 He then said, "Come here and kil me. My head is swimming, although I still have al my strength."	9 e quegli mi disse: - Gettati adunque sopra di me ed uccidimi, poichè sono in preda a ogni sorta di angosce e tutta la mia vita è ancora in me. -
10 So I went over to him and killed him, because I knew that once he fel he could not survive. I then tookthe crown which he had on his head and the bracelet on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.'	10 Standogli pertanto sopra lo uccisi, perchè ben sapevo che non avrebbe potuto sopravvivere alla sua disfatta. Gli tolsi quindi il diadema che aveva in capo e i braccialetti che aveva al braccio e li portai qua a te mio signore».
11 David then took hold of his clothes and tore them, and all the men with him did the same.	11 Davide, prese le sue vesti, le stracciò e gli uomini che erano con lui fecero altrettanto;
12 They mourned and wept and fasted until the evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, for the people ofYahweh and for the House of Israel, because they had fal en by the sword.	12 e fecero duolo e piansero e digiunarono fino a sera a cagione di Saul, del figlio di lui Gionata, del popolo del Signore e della casa d'Israele, perchè erano periti di spada.
13 David said to the young man who had brought the news, 'Where are you from?' He replied, 'I am theson of a resident foreigner, an Amalekite.'	13 Quindi Davide disse al giovane che gli aveva recato quelle notizie: «Donde sei tu?», e quegli rispose: «Sono figlio di uno straniero, d'un Amalecita».
14 David said, 'How was it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed?'	14 E Davide a lui: «Come mai non hai avuto timore di stendere la tua mano per dare la morte all'unto del Signore?».
15 Then David called one of the young men. 'Come here,' he said, 'strike him down.' The man struck himand he died.	15 Chiamato quindi uno dei suoi servi, Davide gli disse: «Vieni qua e gettati sopra costui». L'uomo percosse l'Amalecita che morì.
16 David said, 'Your blood be on your own head. You convicted yourself out of your own mouth bysaying, "I kil ed Yahweh's anointed." '	16 Poi Davide soggiunse: «Il tuo sangue ricada sulla tua testa, poichè la tua bocca ha deposto contro di te, quando hai detto: - Io ho ucciso l'unto del Signore-».
17 David sang the fol owing lament over Saul and his son Jonathan	17 Davide allora fece questa elegia sopra Saul e su Gionata figlio di lui
18 (it is for teaching archery to the children of Judah; it is written in the Book of the Just):	18 (e comandò che s'insegnasse l'Arco ai figli di Giuda, come sta scritto nel Libro dei giusti). E disse: «Considera Israele, quelli che son mortisulle tue alture, coperti di ferite.
19 Does the splendour of Israel lie dead on your heights? How did the heroes fal ?	19 Gli eletti d'Israele soccombettero sopra i tuoi monti! Come mai son caduti i prodi?
20 Do not speak of it in Gath, nor broadcast it in the streets of Ashkelon, for fear the daughters of thePhilistines rejoice, for fear the daughters of the uncircumcised gloat.	20 Non si porti tale notizia a Get, e non se ne pubblichi l'annunzio sulle piazze di Ascalon, perchè le figlie dei Filistei non n'abbiano a godere, e non esultino le figlie degli incirconcisi.
21 You mountains of Gilboa, no dew, no rain fal on you, O treacherous fields where the heroes' shieldlies dishonoured! Not greased with oil, the shield of Saul,	21 Monti di Gelboe non cada sopra di voi nè pioggia nè rugiada, nè vi siano campi da primizie; poichè qui è stato atterrato lo scudo dei forti, lo scudo di Saul, come se non fosse stato unto con olio.
22 but with the blood of wounded men, the fat of warriors! The bow of Jonathan never turned back, thesword of Saul never came home unsated!	22 Dal sangue dei feriti, dalle grasse viscere dei fortila saetta di Gionata non tornò mai indietro, nè la spada di Saul non è mai ritornata a vuoto.
23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and handsome, were divided neither in life, nor in death. Swifter thaneagles were they, stronger than lions.	23 Saul e Gionata amabili e belli durante la vita, neppure in morte sono stati divisi; eran più veloci dell'aquile, più forti dei leoni.
24 O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul who gave you scarlet and fine linen to wear, who pinned goldenjewel ery on your dresses!	24 Figliuole d'Israele piangete sopra Saul, che vi vestiva così delicatamente di scarlatto, e alle vostre vesti aggiungeva ornamenti d'oro.
25 How did the heroes fall in the thick of the battle? Jonathan, by your dying I too am stricken,	25 Come mai son caduti i forti in mezzo alla pugna?venne ucciso Gionata sulle tue colline?
26 I am desolate for you, Jonathan my brother. Very dear you were to me, your love more wonderful tome than the love of a woman.	26 Io piango su di te, fratel mio Gionata, bello e oltremodo amabilepiù che l'amor delle donne. Come una madre ama l'unico suo figlio, così io ti amavo.
27 How did the heroes fall and the weapons of war succumb!	27 Come mai son caduti gli eroi, e sono infrante le armi da guerra!».
