Genesis 50

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 At this Joseph threw himself on his father's face, covering it with tears and kisses.	1 Accortosi della morte, Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia del padre, piangendo e baciandolo,
2 Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. The doctors embalmed Israel,	2 poi ordinò ai medici suoi servi di imbalsamare il padre.
3 and it took them forty days, for embalming takes forty days to complete. The Egyptians mourned himfor seventy days.	3 A imbalsamarlo impiegarono quaranta giorni, come usavasi riguardo ai cadaveri imbalsamati; e l'Egitto lo pianse settanta giorni.
4 When the period of mourning for him was over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, 'If you have anyaffection for me, see that this message reaches Pharaoh's ears,	4 Finito poi il tempo del lutto, Giuseppe disse alla famiglia di Faraone: « Se io ho trovato grazia dinanzi a voi, fate giungere agli orecchi di Faraone
5 "My father put me under oath, saying: I am about to die. In the tomb which I dug for myself in Canaan, that is where you are to bury me. So may I have leave to go up and bury my father, and then come back?" '	5 che mio padre, facendomi giurare, mi ha detto: Ecco, io muoio, seppelliscimi nel mio sepolcro che mi scavai nella terra di Canaan. Andrò adunque a seppellire mio padre, e tornerò ».
6 Pharaoh replied, 'Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'	6 E Faraone rispose: « Va pure a seppellire tuo padre come promettesti con giuramento ».
7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's officials, the dignitaries of hispalace and al the dignitaries of Egypt,	7 Allora Giuseppe andò, e con lui andarono tutti gli anziani della casa di Faraone e tutti i principali della terra d'Egitto;
8 as wel as all Joseph's family, his brothers and his father's family. The only people they left behind inGoshen were those unfit to travel, and their flocks and cattle.	8 e la casa di Giuseppe coi suoi fratelli, eccetto i fanciulli, i greggi e gli armenti, che lasciarono nella terra di Gessen.
9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too; it was a very large retinue.	9 Fu pure accompagnato da carri e da cavalieri, e così il corteo fu numerosissimo.
10 On arriving at Goren-ha-Atad, which is across the Jordan, they there held a long and solemnlamentation, and Joseph observed seven days' mourning for his father.	10 Or giunti all'aia di Atad,che è al di là del Giordano, vi si fermarono sette giorni a celebrare il funerale, con duolo grande e profondo.
11 When the Canaanites, the local inhabitants, witnessed the mourning at Goren-ha-Atad, they said,'This is a solemn act of mourning by the Egyptians,' which is why the place was given the name Abel-Mizraim-itis across the Jordan.	11 Avendo ciò osservato gli abitatori di Canaan, dissero: « Questo è un lutto grave per gli Egiziani ». E per questo quel luogo fu chiamato il Duolo dell'Egitto.
12 His sons did what he had ordered them to do for him.	12 Poi i figli di Giacobbe, facendo come egli aveva loro comandato,
13 His sons carried him to Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre,which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site of his own.	13 lo portarono nella terra di Canaan, e lo seppellirono nella doppia caverna, dirimpetto a Mambre, che Abramo aveva insieme al campo comprata da Efron Eteo per farne un sepolcro di sua proprietà.
14 Then Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had come up with him to bury hisfather.	14 E Giuseppe, sepolto che fu il padre, tornò in Egitto coi suoi fratelli e con tutto il suo seguito.
15 Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, 'What if Joseph intends to treat us asenemies and pay us back for al the wrong we did him?'	15 Morto il padre, i fratelli di Giuseppe con timore dicevano tra di loro: « Chi sa che egli non si ricordi dell'ingiuria sofferta e non ci renda tutto il male che gli abbiamo fatto? »
16 So they sent this message to Joseph: 'Before your father died, he gave us this order:	16 E quindi mandarono a dirgli: « Il tuo padre, prima di morire, ci comandò
17 "You are to say to Joseph: Now please forgive the crime and faults of your brothers and al thewrong they did you." So now please forgive the crime of the servants of your father's God.' Joseph wept at themessage they sent to him.	17 che a nome suo ti dicessimo: Dimentica, ti prego, il delitto dei tuoi fratelli, e il peccato e la malizia che ebbero contro di te: e noi pure ti preghiamo di perdonare tale iniquità ti servi del Dio di tuo padre ». Udite queste parole, Giuseppe pianse.
18 Then his brothers went to him themselves and, throwing themselves at his feet, said, 'Take us asyour slaves!'	18 Allora i suoi fratelli andarono a trovarlo e prostrati bocconi per terra dissero: « Noi siamo i tuoi servi».
19 But Joseph replied, 'Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God's place?	19 Ma egli rispose loro: « Non temete. Possiamo forse resistere al volere di Dio?
20 The evil you planned to do me has by God's design been turned to good, to bring about the presentresult: the survival of a numerous people.	20 Voi, è vero, faceste dei cattivi disegni contro di me, ma Dio li converti in bene per esaltarmi, come vedete che succede, e per salvare molti popoli.
21 So there is no need to be afraid; I shall provide for you and your dependants.' In this way hereassured them by speaking affectionately to them.	21 Non temete: io nutrirò voi e i vostri figlioli ». E li consolò, parlando loro con dolcezza e mansuetudine.
22 So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father's family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.	22 Giuseppe dimorò in Egitto con tutta la famiglia di suo padre; e visse cento dieci anni. E vide i figli di Efraim fino alla terza generazione. Anche i figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, furon posti sulle ginocchia di Giuseppe.
23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's line, as also the children of Machir son of Manasseh,who were born on Joseph's lap.	23 Finalmente Giuseppe disse ai suoi fratelli: « Dio vi visiterà dopo la mia morte, e vi farà salire da questa terra a quella promessa con giuramento ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe ».
24 At length Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die; but God wil be sure to remember you kindlyand take you out of this country to the country which he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'	24 E fattili giurare, dicendo: « Quando Dio vi visiterà, portate con voi le mie ossa »
25 And Joseph put Israel's sons on oath, saying, 'When God remembers you with kindness, be sure totake my bones away from here.'	25 Mori in età di cento dieci anni. E, imbalsamato, fu riposto in una cassa in Egitto.
26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; he was embalmed and laid in a coffin in Egypt.
