1 At this Joseph threw himself on his father's face, covering it with tears and kisses.	1 Alors Joseph se jeta sur le visage de son père et le couvrit de larmes et de baisers.
2 Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. The doctors embalmed Israel,	2 Ensuite Joseph ordonna aux médecins qui étaient à son service d’embaumer son père, et les médecins embaumèrent Israël.
3 and it took them forty days, for embalming takes forty days to complete. The Egyptians mourned himfor seventy days.	3 Cela dura quarante jours, car tel est le temps nécessaire pour l’embaumement. Puis les Égyptiens le pleurèrent soixante-dix jours.
4 When the period of mourning for him was over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, 'If you have anyaffection for me, see that this message reaches Pharaoh's ears,	4 Lorsque les jours de deuil furent passés, Joseph adressa cette demande à l’entourage du Pharaon: “Si j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, parlez donc au Pharaon de ma part.
5 "My father put me under oath, saying: I am about to die. In the tomb which I dug for myself in Canaan, that is where you are to bury me. So may I have leave to go up and bury my father, and then come back?" '	5 Au moment de mourir, mon père m’a fait jurer de l’enterrer dans le tombeau qu’il s’est creusé au pays de Canaan. À présent donc, dites-lui qu’il me laisse y aller pour enterrer mon père et ensuite je reviendrai.”
6 Pharaoh replied, 'Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'	6 Pharaon répondit: “Va et enterre ton père, comme il te l’a fait jurer!”
7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's officials, the dignitaries of hispalace and al the dignitaries of Egypt,	7 Joseph partit donc pour enterrer son père, et avec lui partirent tous les serviteurs du Pharaon, les anciens de sa maison et tous les anciens d’Égypte,
8 as wel as all Joseph's family, his brothers and his father's family. The only people they left behind inGoshen were those unfit to travel, and their flocks and cattle.	8 toute la maison de Joseph, ses frères et la maison de son père. Ils ne laissèrent au pays de Gossen que leurs petits enfants, leur petit et leur gros bétail.
9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too; it was a very large retinue.	9 Des chars et des cavaliers montèrent avec lui, c’était une énorme caravane!
10 On arriving at Goren-ha-Atad, which is across the Jordan, they there held a long and solemnlamentation, and Joseph observed seven days' mourning for his father.	10 Quand ils arrivèrent à l’Aire-de-l’Épine qui est au-delà du Jourdain, ils firent le deuil en grand, et Joseph fit encore sept jours de deuil pour son père.
11 When the Canaanites, the local inhabitants, witnessed the mourning at Goren-ha-Atad, they said,'This is a solemn act of mourning by the Egyptians,' which is why the place was given the name Abel-Mizraim-itis across the Jordan.	11 Les habitants du pays, les Cananéens, virent le deuil à l’Aire-de-l’Épine: “C’est un deuil solennel des Égyptiens”, dirent-ils. C’est pourquoi on appela ce lieu du nom d’Abel-Misraïm (ce qui veut dire: Deuil pour l’Égypte): il se trouve au-delà du Jourdain.
12 His sons did what he had ordered them to do for him.	12 Les fils de Jacob accomplirent tout ce qu’il leur avait commandé.
13 His sons carried him to Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre,which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site of his own.	13 Ils le transportèrent au pays de Canaan et l’enterrèrent dans la grotte du champ de Makpéla, le champ qu’Abraham avait acheté à Éfron le Hittite, comme tombeau personnel en face de Mambré.
14 Then Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had come up with him to bury hisfather.	14 Après l’enterrement, Joseph retourna en Égypte avec ses frères et tous ceux qui étaient venus avec lui pour enterrer son père.
15 Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, 'What if Joseph intends to treat us asenemies and pay us back for al the wrong we did him?'	15 Quand les frères de Joseph virent que leur père était mort, ils se dirent: “Si jamais Joseph nous prenait en haine et voulait nous rendre maintenant tout le mal que nous lui avons fait!”
16 So they sent this message to Joseph: 'Before your father died, he gave us this order:	16 Aussi envoyèrent-ils quelqu’un dire à Joseph: “Ton père avant sa mort nous a donné cet avis:
17 "You are to say to Joseph: Now please forgive the crime and faults of your brothers and al thewrong they did you." So now please forgive the crime of the servants of your father's God.' Joseph wept at themessage they sent to him.	17 Voici ce que vous direz à Joseph: Je t’en prie, pardonne le crime de tes frères et le péché qu’ils ont commis quand ils t’ont fait du mal. Pardonne donc cette faute aux serviteurs du Dieu de ton père!” Joseph pleura quand on lui rapporta ces paroles.
18 Then his brothers went to him themselves and, throwing themselves at his feet, said, 'Take us asyour slaves!'	18 Ses frères allèrent se jeter à ses pieds et lui dirent: “Voici que nous sommes tes esclaves!”
19 But Joseph replied, 'Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God's place?	19 Mais Joseph leur répondit: “N’ayez pas peur! Est-ce que je suis à la place de Dieu?
20 The evil you planned to do me has by God's design been turned to good, to bring about the presentresult: the survival of a numerous people.	20 Vous avez cherché à me faire du mal, mais Dieu a changé ce mal en bien, pour en arriver à ce que vous voyez aujourd’hui: donner la vie à une multitude.
21 So there is no need to be afraid; I shall provide for you and your dependants.' In this way hereassured them by speaking affectionately to them.	21 Maintenant donc n’ayez pas peur, je vous donnerai à manger, à vous et à vos petits enfants.” Puis il les consola et leur parla du fond du cœur.
22 So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father's family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.	22 Joseph resta en Égypte, lui et la famille de son père. Joseph vécut jusqu’à l’âge de 110 ans.
23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's line, as also the children of Machir son of Manasseh,who were born on Joseph's lap.	23 Joseph vit naître les arrière-petits-enfants d’Éphraïm et il adopta les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé.
24 At length Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die; but God wil be sure to remember you kindlyand take you out of this country to the country which he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'	24 Joseph dit alors à ses frères: “Je vais mourir, mais Dieu vous visitera. Il vous fera remonter de ce pays vers le pays qu’il a promis par serment à Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.”
25 And Joseph put Israel's sons on oath, saying, 'When God remembers you with kindness, be sure totake my bones away from here.'	25 Joseph fit alors prêter serment aux fils d’Israël: “Quand Dieu vous aura visités, leur dit-il, vous ferez remonter mes ossements d’Égypte.”
26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; he was embalmed and laid in a coffin in Egypt.	26 Joseph mourut à l’âge de 110 ans. On l’embauma, puis on le mit dans un cercueil en Égypte.
