1 At this Joseph threw himself on his father's face, covering it with tears and kisses.	1 Ciò avendo veduto Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia del padre piangendo, e baciandolo.
2 Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. The doctors embalmed Israel,	2 E ordinò a' medici suoi servi, che imbalsamassero il padre.
3 and it took them forty days, for embalming takes forty days to complete. The Egyptians mourned himfor seventy days.	3 E quaranta giorni passarono, mentre quegli eseguivano puntualmente il suo comando: imperocché così portava il costume riguardo all'imbalsamare i cadaveri: e l'Egitto fu in lutto per settanta giorni.
4 When the period of mourning for him was over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, 'If you have anyaffection for me, see that this message reaches Pharaoh's ears,	4 E finito il tempo del duolo, disse Giuseppe alla famiglia di Faraone: Se io ho trovato grazia dinanzi a voi, insinuate a Faraone,
5 "My father put me under oath, saying: I am about to die. In the tomb which I dug for myself in Canaan, that is where you are to bury me. So may I have leave to go up and bury my father, and then come back?" '	5 Che il padre mio facendomi giurare di obbedirlo, mi disse: Io mi muoio; tu mi seppellirai nella mia sepoltura, che mi scavai nella terra di Chanaan. Anderò dunque a seppellire il padre mio, e poi tornerò.
6 Pharaoh replied, 'Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'	6 E Faraone gli disse: Va', e seppellisci il padre tuo, come promettesti con giuramento.
7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's officials, the dignitaries of hispalace and al the dignitaries of Egypt,	7 Ed egli andò, e andaron con lui tutti gli anziani della casa di Faraone, e tutti i principali della terra d'Egitto:
8 as wel as all Joseph's family, his brothers and his father's family. The only people they left behind inGoshen were those unfit to travel, and their flocks and cattle.	8 E la casa di Giuseppe co' suoi fratelli, lasciando i fanciulli, e i greggi, e gli armenti nella terra di Gessen.
9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too; it was a very large retinue.	9 Ebbe ancora accompagnamento di carri, e di cavalieri, e fu una non piccola turba.
10 On arriving at Goren-ha-Atad, which is across the Jordan, they there held a long and solemnlamentation, and Joseph observed seven days' mourning for his father.	10 E giunsero all'aia di Atad, che è situata di là dal Giordano: dove impiegarono sette dì a celebrare il funerale con duolo grande, e profondo.
11 When the Canaanites, the local inhabitants, witnessed the mourning at Goren-ha-Atad, they said,'This is a solemn act of mourning by the Egyptians,' which is why the place was given the name Abel-Mizraim-itis across the Jordan.	11 Lo che osservato avendo gli abitatori della terra di Chanaan dissero: Gran duolo menano gli Egiziani. E per questo fu chiamato quel luogo il Duolo dell'Egitto.
12 His sons did what he had ordered them to do for him.	12 Fecero adunque i figliuoli di Giacobbe, come egli avea lor comandato.
13 His sons carried him to Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre,which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site of his own.	13 E portatolo nella terra di Chanaan, lo seppellirono nella doppia caverna, la quale Abramo avea comprata insieme col campo dirimpetto a Mambre da Ephron Hetheo per farne una sepoltura.
14 Then Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had come up with him to bury hisfather.	14 E Giuseppe tornò in Egitto co' suoi fratelli, e con tutto il suo accompagnamento, sepolto che fu il padre.
15 Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, 'What if Joseph intends to treat us asenemies and pay us back for al the wrong we did him?'	15 Dopo la morte del quale vivendo in timore i fratelli, e dicendo tra di loro: Chi sa, ch'ei non si ricordi dell'ingiuria sofferta, e non voglia renderci tutto il male, che a lui facemmo?
16 So they sent this message to Joseph: 'Before your father died, he gave us this order:	16 Mandarono a dirli: Il padre tuo prima di morire ci comandò,
17 "You are to say to Joseph: Now please forgive the crime and faults of your brothers and al thewrong they did you." So now please forgive the crime of the servants of your father's God.' Joseph wept at themessage they sent to him.	17 Che a nome suo ti dicessimo: Di grazia poni in dimenticanza la scelleraggine de' tuoi fratelli, e il peccato, e la malizia usata da loro contro di te: noi pure ti preghiamo di perdonare questa iniquità a' servi del Dio di tuo padre. Udito questo, pianse Giuseppe.
18 Then his brothers went to him themselves and, throwing themselves at his feet, said, 'Take us asyour slaves!'	18 E andarono a trovarlo i suoi fratelli, e prostrati per terra adorandolo, dissero: Noi siam tuoi servi.
19 But Joseph replied, 'Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God's place?	19 Rispose loro: Non temete: possiam noi resistere al volere di Dio?
20 The evil you planned to do me has by God's design been turned to good, to bring about the presentresult: the survival of a numerous people.	20 Voi faceste cattivi disegni contro di me; ma Dio li convertì in bene affine di esaltarmi, come vedete di presente, e salvar molti popoli.
21 So there is no need to be afraid; I shall provide for you and your dependants.' In this way hereassured them by speaking affectionately to them.	21 Non temete: io nutrirò voi, e i vostri pargoletti. E gli consolò, e parlò loro con dolcezza, e mansuetudine.
22 So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father's family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.	22 Ed egli abitò nell'Egitto con tutta la famiglia del padre suo: e visse cento dieci anni. E vide i figliuoli di Ephraim fino alla terza generazione. I figliuoli ancora di Machir figliuolo di Manasse furon posti sulle ginocchia di Giuseppe.
23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's line, as also the children of Machir son of Manasseh,who were born on Joseph's lap.	23 Dopo tutte queste cose disse egli a' suoi fratelli: Dio vi visiterà dopo la mia morte, e faravvi passare da questa terra alla terra promessa con giuramento ad Abramo, ad Isacco, e a Giacobbe.
24 At length Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die; but God wil be sure to remember you kindlyand take you out of this country to the country which he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'	24 E fattili giurare, dicendo: Quando Dio vi visiterà, portate con voi da questo luogo le mie ossa:
25 And Joseph put Israel's sons on oath, saying, 'When God remembers you with kindness, be sure totake my bones away from here.'	25 Si morì, compiuti i cento dieci anni di sua vita. E imbalsamato fu riposto in una cassa nell'Egitto.
26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; he was embalmed and laid in a coffin in Egypt.
