Genesis 50

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 At this Joseph threw himself on his father's face, covering it with tears and kisses.	1 Entonces José se echó sobre el rostro de su padre, lo cubrió de lágrimas y lo besó.
2 Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. The doctors embalmed Israel,	2 Después dio a los médicos que estaban a su servicio la orden de embalsamar a su padre, y los médicos embalsamaron a Israel.
3 and it took them forty days, for embalming takes forty days to complete. The Egyptians mourned himfor seventy days.	3 Esto les llevó cuarenta días, porque ese es el tiempo que dura el embalsamamiento. Los egipcios estuvieron de duelo por él durante setenta días.
4 When the period of mourning for him was over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, 'If you have anyaffection for me, see that this message reaches Pharaoh's ears,	4 Una vez transcurrido ese período, José se dirigió a la corte del Faraón en estos términos: «Por favor, presenten al Faraón el siguiente pedido:
5 "My father put me under oath, saying: I am about to die. In the tomb which I dug for myself in Canaan, that is where you are to bury me. So may I have leave to go up and bury my father, and then come back?" '	5 En una oportunidad mi padre me dijo, obligándome bajo juramento: «Cuando yo muera, asegúrate de que me entierren en la tumba que me hice preparar en el país de Canaán. ¿Puedo ir a sepultar a mi padre y luego regresar?».
6 Pharaoh replied, 'Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'	6 El Faraón respondió: «Ve a sepultar a tu padre, como él te lo hizo prometer bajo juramento».
7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's officials, the dignitaries of hispalace and al the dignitaries of Egypt,	7 José partió entonces para ir a sepultar a su padre, y con él fueron todos los servidores del Faraón, los ancianos de su palacio y todos los ancianos de Egipto,
8 as wel as all Joseph's family, his brothers and his father's family. The only people they left behind inGoshen were those unfit to travel, and their flocks and cattle.	8 lo mismo que la familia de José, sus hermanos y la familia de su padre. En la región de Gosen dejaron únicamente a los niños y el ganado.
9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too; it was a very large retinue.	9 También fueron con él carros de guerra y jinetes, de manera que se formó un cortejo imponente.
10 On arriving at Goren-ha-Atad, which is across the Jordan, they there held a long and solemnlamentation, and Joseph observed seven days' mourning for his father.	10 Al llegar a Goren Haatad, que está al otro lado del Jordán, celebraron las exequias con gran solemnidad, y José estuvo de duelo por su padre durante siete días.
11 When the Canaanites, the local inhabitants, witnessed the mourning at Goren-ha-Atad, they said,'This is a solemn act of mourning by the Egyptians,' which is why the place was given the name Abel-Mizraim-itis across the Jordan.	11 Los cananeos, habitantes del país, al ver los funerales de Goren Haatad, dijeron: «Este es un funeral solemne de los egipcios». Por eso aquel lugar, que se encuentra al otro lado del Jordán, se llamó Abel Misraim.
12 His sons did what he had ordered them to do for him.	12 Los hijos de Jacob hicieron con él todo lo que les había mandado:
13 His sons carried him to Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre,which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site of his own.	13 lo trasladaron a Canaán y lo sepultaron en el campo de Macpelá, frente a Mamré, el campo que Abraham había comprado a Efrón, el hitita, para tenerlo como sepulcro familiar.
14 Then Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had come up with him to bury hisfather.	14 Y después de sepultar a su padre, José regresó a Egipto en compañía de sus hermanos y de todos los que habían ido a dar sepultura a su padre.
15 Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, 'What if Joseph intends to treat us asenemies and pay us back for al the wrong we did him?'	15 Al ver que su padre había muerto, los hermanos de José se dijeron: «¿Y si José nos guarda rencor y nos devuelve todo el mal que le hicimos?».
16 So they sent this message to Joseph: 'Before your father died, he gave us this order:	16 Por eso le enviaron este mensaje: «Antes de morir, tu padre dejó esta orden:
17 "You are to say to Joseph: Now please forgive the crime and faults of your brothers and al thewrong they did you." So now please forgive the crime of the servants of your father's God.' Joseph wept at themessage they sent to him.	17 «Díganle a José: Perdona el crimen y el pecado de tus hermanos, que te hicieron tanto mal. Por eso, perdona el crimen de los servidores del Dios de tu padre». Al oír estas palabras, José se puso a llorar.
18 Then his brothers went to him themselves and, throwing themselves at his feet, said, 'Take us asyour slaves!'	18 Luego sus hermanos fueron personalmente, se postraron ante él y le dijeron: «Aquí nos tienes: somos tus esclavos».
19 But Joseph replied, 'Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God's place?	19 Pero José les respondió: «No tengan miedo. ¿Acaso yo puedo hacer las veces de Dios?
20 The evil you planned to do me has by God's design been turned to good, to bring about the presentresult: the survival of a numerous people.	20 El designio de Dios ha transformado en bien el mal que ustedes pensaron hacerme, a fin de cumplir lo que hoy se realiza: salvar la vida a un pueblo numeroso.
21 So there is no need to be afraid; I shall provide for you and your dependants.' In this way hereassured them by speaking affectionately to them.	21 Por eso, no teman. Yo velaré por ustedes y por las personas que están a su cargo». Y los reconfortó, hablándoles afectuosamente.
22 So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father's family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.	22 José permaneció en Egipto junto con la familia de su padre, y vivió ciento diez años.
23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's line, as also the children of Machir son of Manasseh,who were born on Joseph's lap.	23 Así pudo ver a los hijos de Efraím hasta la tercera generación; y los hijos de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, también nacieron sobre las rodillas de José.
24 At length Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die; but God wil be sure to remember you kindlyand take you out of this country to the country which he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'	24 Finalmente, José dijo a sus hermanos: «Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero Dios los visitará y los llevará de este país a la tierra que prometió con un juramento a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob».
25 And Joseph put Israel's sons on oath, saying, 'When God remembers you with kindness, be sure totake my bones away from here.'	25 Luego hizo prestar un juramento a los hijos de Israel, diciéndoles: «Cuando Dios los visite, lleven de aquí mis restos».
26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; he was embalmed and laid in a coffin in Egypt.	26 José murió a la edad de ciento diez años. Fue embalsamado y colocado en un sarcófago, en Egipto.
