NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.1 Eodem tempore, descendens Judas a fratribus suis, divertit ad virum Odollamitem, nomine Hiram.
There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.2 Viditque ibi filiam hominis Chananæi, vocabulo Sue : et accepta uxore, ingressus est ad eam.
She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.3 Quæ concepit, et peperit filium, et vocavit nomen ejus Her.
She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.4 Rursumque concepto f?tu, natum filium vocavit Onan.
Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.5 Tertium quoque peperit : quem appellavit Sela ; quo nato, parere ultra cessavit.
Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.6 Dedit autem Judas uxorem primogenito suo Her, nomine Thamar.
But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.7 Fuit quoque Her primogenitus Judæ nequam in conspectu Domini : et ab eo occisus est.
Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, tomaintain your brother's line.'8 Dixit ergo Judas ad Onan filium suum : Ingredere uxorem fratris tui, et sociare illi, ut suscites semen fratri tuo.
But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.9 Ille sciens non sibi nasci filios, introiens ad uxorem fratris sui, semen fundebat in terram, ne liberi fratris nomine nascerentur.
What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.10 Et idcirco percussit eum Dominus, quod rem detestabilem faceret.
Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.11 Quam ob rem dixit Judas Thamar nurui suæ : Esto vidua in domo patris tui, donec crescat Sela filius meus : timebat enim ne et ipse moreretur, sicut fratres ejus. Quæ abiit, et habitavit in domo patris sui.
A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.12 Evolutis autem multis diebus, mortua est filia Sue uxor Judæ : qui, post luctum consolatione suscepta, ascendebat ad tonsores ovium suarum, ipse et Hiras opilio gregis Odollamites, in Thamnas.
When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'13 Nuntiatumque est Thamar quod socer illius ascenderet in Thamnas ad tondendas oves.
she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat downat the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, shehad not been given to him as his wife.14 Quæ, depositis viduitatis vestibus, assumpsit theristrum : et mutato habitu, sedit in bivio itineris, quod ducit Thamnam : eo quod crevisset Sela, et non eum accepisset maritum.
Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.15 Quam cum vidisset Judas, suspicatus est esse meretricem : operuerat enim vultum suum, ne agnosceretur.
Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was hisdaughter-in-law. 'What wil you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.16 Ingrediensque ad eam, ait : Dimitte me ut coëam tecum : nesciebat enim quod nurus sua esset. Qua respondente : Quid dabis mihi ut fruaris concubitu meo ?
'I wil send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' shereplied.17 dixit : Mittam tibi hædum de gregibus. Rursumque illa dicente : Patiar quod vis, si dederis mihi arrhabonem, donec mittas quod polliceris.
'What pledge shal I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' shereplied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.18 Ait Judas : Quid tibi vis pro arrhabone dari ? Respondit : Annulum tuum, et armillam, et baculum quem manu tenes. Ad unum igitur coitum mulier concepit,
Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.19 et surgens abiit : depositoque habitu quem sumpserat, induta est viduitatis vestibus.
Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.20 Misit autem Judas hædum per pastorem suum Odollamitem, ut reciperet pignus quod dederat mulieri : qui cum non invenisset eam,
He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.21 interrogavit homines loci illius : Ubi est mulier quæ sedebat in bivio ? Respondentibus cunctis : Non fuit in loco ista meretrix.
So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'22 Reversus est ad Judam, et dixit ei : Non inveni eam : sed et homines loci illius dixerunt mihi, numquam sedisse ibi scortum.
'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'23 Ait Judas : Habeat sibi, certe mendacii arguere nos non potest, ego misi hædum quem promiseram : et tu non invenisti eam.
About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore, she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'24 Ecce autem post tres menses nuntiaverunt Judæ, dicentes : Fornicata est Thamar nurus tua, et videtur uterus illius intumescere. Dixitque Judas : Producite eam ut comburatur.
But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'25 Quæ cum duceretur ad p?nam, misit ad socerum suum, dicens : De viro, cujus hæc sunt, concepi : cognosce cujus sit annulus, et armilla, et baculus.
Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.26 Qui, agnitis muneribus, ait : Justior me est : quia non tradidi eam Sela filio meo. Attamen ultra non cognovit eam.
When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!27 Instante autem partu, apparuerunt gemini in utero : atque in ipsa effusione infantium unus protulit manum, in qua obstetrix ligavit coccinum, dicens :
During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.28 Iste egredietur prior.
Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.29 Illo vero retrahente manum, egressus est alter : dixitque mulier : Quare divisa est propter te maceria ? et ob hanc causam, vocavit nomen ejus Phares.
Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.30 Postea egressus est frater ejus, in cujus manu erat coccinum : quem appellavit Zara.
