1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.	1 - In quel tempo, separatosi Giuda dai suoi fratelli, si recò presso un uomo di Odollam, di nome Hiram.
2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.	2 Vide ivi la figlia d'un Cananeo chiamato Sue, e, presala in moglie, stette con lei.
3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.	3 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio, e gli mise nome Her.
4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.	4 Poi, avendo di nuovo concepito, chiamò Onan il figlio che le nacque.
5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.	5 Partorì indi un terzo figlio, e lo chiamò Sela; dopo la nascita del quale, cessò di partorire.
6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.	6 In seguito, Giuda dette al primogenito suo Her, per moglie, una donna chiamata Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.	7 Ma Her primogenito di Giuda era uno scellerato nel cospetto del Signore, il quale perciò lo fece morire.

9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.	9 Ma quegli, sapendo che i figli così nati non sarebbero suoi, usando con la moglie del suo fratello impediva che concepisse acciò non nascessero figli nel nome del suo fratello.
10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.	10 Perciò, il Signore percosse anche lui, poichè faceva cosa abominevole.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.	11 Laonde, disse Giuda a Tamar sua nuora: «Vivi come vedova nella casa di tuo padre, sinchè non sia cresciuto l'altro mio figlio Sela». Ma egli temeva che anche questi morisse, come i suoi fratelli. Essa intanto, se n'andò a dimorare nella casa di suo padre.
12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.	12 Trascorso poi molto tempo, morì la figlia di Sue, moglie di Giuda; e questi, quando si fu consolato dopo il lutto, salì a Tamnas per la tosatura delle sue pecore, egli e Hiras l'Odollamita, pastore del suo gregge.
13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'	13 E fu annunziato a Tamar che il suo suocero saliva a Tamnas per la tosatura delle pecore.
14 she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat downat the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, shehad not been given to him as his wife.	14 Essa, deposte le vesti da vedova, si mise un gran velo, e così travestita si pose a sedere sul bivio della strada che conduce a Tamnas; [ciò fece] perchè Sela era ormai cresciuto, ed essa non l'aveva ricevuto in marito.
15 Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.	15 Giuda, quando la vide, s'immaginò che fosse una donna da strada, essendosi ella coperto il viso per non essere riconosciuta.
16 Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was hisdaughter-in-law. 'What wil you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.	16 Rivoltosi a lei disse: «Lasciami esser con te», non sapendo che fosse la sua nuora. Quella rispose: «Che mi darai per avermi come desideri?».
17 'I wil send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' shereplied.	17 Ed egli: «Ti manderò un capretto dei miei greggi». Essa soggiunse: «Farò quel che vuoi, se mi lascerai un pegno sino a che tu mi mandi quel che hai promesso».
18 'What pledge shal I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' shereplied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.	18 Disse Giuda: «Che vuoi ch'io ti dia come pegno?». Rispose: «L'anello, il braccialetto, ed il bastone che tieni in mano». Allora si dette a lui, e concepì;
19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.	19 poi levatasi se n'andò, e, deposto l'abito che s'era messo, riprese le vesti di vedova.
20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.	20 Giuda poi mandò il capretto per mezzo del suo pastore Odollamita, che ritirasse il pegno lasciato alla donna. Questi, non avendola trovata,
21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.	21 domandò alla gente di quel luogo: «Dov'è quella donna che sedeva sul bivio?». Avendo tutti risposto: «Qui non ci sono state donne pubbliche»,
22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'	22 ritornò a Giuda, e gli disse: «Non l'ho trovata, e tutta la gente di quel luogo mi ha detto che ivi non s'è mai fermata una donna pubblica».
23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'	23 Disse Giuda: «Si tenga pure [il pegno]; non potrà certo accusarci d'inganno; io le ho mandato il capretto promesso, e tu non l'hai trovata».
24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore,she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'	24 Ed ecco, tre mesi dopo, vennero a dire a Giuda: «Tamar tua nuora ha peccato con un uomo; si vede che è gravida». Disse Giuda: «Conducetela fuori, ad essere arsa».
25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'	25 Mentre la conducevano al supplizio, essa mandò a dire al suo suocero: «Io sono gravida, per opera dell'uomo al quale appartengono questi oggetti. Riconosci di chi sono, l'anello, il braccialetto e il bastone».
26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.	26 Giuda, riconosciuti i pegni disse: «Essa è più giusta di me: perchè io non l'ho data in sposa a Sela mio figlio». Nè più usò con lei.
27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!	27 Giunto poi il tempo del parto, si scoprì che portava in seno due gemelli. Quando stavan per nascere, uno mise fuori una mano, alla quale la levatrice legò un filo rosso, dicendo:
28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.	28 «Questi uscirà pel primo».
29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.	29 Ma avendo quegli ritirata la mano, uscì l'altro. Disse la donna: «Per qual motivo hai tu rotto la muraglia?». Per questo gli mise nome Fares.
30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.	30 Poi uscì il fratello, quello alla cui mano era il segno rosso, e fu chiamato Zara.
