Genesis 38

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.	1 Il arriva, vers ce temps-là, que Juda se sépara de ses frères et se rendit chez un homme d'Adullamqui se nommait Hira.
2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.	2 Là, Juda vit la fille d'un Cananéen qui se nommait Shua, il la prit pour femme et s'unit à elle.
3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.	3 Celle-ci conçut et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Er.
4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.	4 De nouveau, elle conçut et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Onân.
5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.	5 Encore une fois, elle enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Shéla; elle se trouvait à Kezib quand elle luidonna naissance.
6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.	6 Juda prit une femme pour son premier-né Er; elle se nommait Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.	7 Mais Er, premier-né de Juda, déplut à Yahvé, qui le fit mourir.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, tomaintain your brother's line.'	8 Alors Juda dit à Onân: "Va vers la femme de ton frère, remplis avec elle ton devoir de beau-frère etassure une postérité à ton frère."
9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.	9 Cependant Onân savait que la postérité ne serait pas sienne et, chaque fois qu'il s'unissait à lafemme de son frère, il laissait perdre à terre pour ne pas donner une postérité à son frère.
10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.	10 Ce qu'il faisait déplut à Yahvé, qui le fit mourir lui aussi.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.	11 Alors Juda dit à sa belle-fille Tamar: "Retourne comme veuve chez ton père, en attendant quegrandisse mon fils Shéla." Il se disait: "Il ne faut pas que celui-là meure comme ses frères." Tamar s'en retournadonc chez son père.
12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.	12 Bien des jours passèrent et la fille de Shua, la femme de Juda, mourut. Lorsque Juda fut consolé,il monta à Timna pour la tonte de ses brebis, lui et Hira, son ami d'Adullam.
13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'	13 On avertit Tamar: "Voici, lui dit-on, que ton beau-père monte à Timna pour tondre ses brebis."
14 she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat downat the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, shehad not been given to him as his wife.	14 Alors, elle quitta ses vêtements de veuve, elle se couvrit d'un voile, s'enveloppa et s'assit à l'entréed'Enayim, qui est sur le chemin de Timna. Elle voyait bien que Shéla était devenu grand et qu'elle ne lui avaitpas été donnée pour femme.
15 Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.	15 Juda l'aperçut et la prit pour une prostituée, car elle s'était voilé le visage.
16 Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was hisdaughter-in-law. 'What wil you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.	16 Il se dirigea vers elle sur le chemin et dit: "Laisse, que j'aille avec toi!" Il ne savait pas que c'étaitsabelle-fille. Mais elle demanda: "Que me donneras-tu pour aller avec moi?"
17 'I wil send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' shereplied.	17 Il répondit: "Je t'enverrai un chevreau du troupeau." Mais elle reprit: "Oui, si tu me donnes ungage en attendant que tu l'envoies!"
18 'What pledge shal I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' shereplied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.	18 Il demanda: "Quel gage te donnerai-je?" Et elle répondit: "Ton sceau et ton cordon et la canne quetu as à la main." Il les lui donna et alla avec elle, qui devint enceinte de lui.
19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.	19 Elle se leva, partit, enleva son voile et reprit ses vêtements de veuve.
20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.	20 Juda envoya le chevreau par l'intermédiaire de son ami d'Adullam, pour reprendre les gages desmains de la femme, mais celui-ci ne la retrouva pas.
21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.	21 Il demanda aux gens du lieu: "Où est cette prostituée qui était à Enayim, sur le chemin?" Mais ilsrépondirent: "Il n'y a jamais eu là de prostituée!"
22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'	22 Il revint donc auprès de Juda et dit: "Je ne l'ai pas retrouvée. Et même, les gens du lieu m'ont ditqu'il n'y avait jamais eu là de prostituée."
23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'	23 Juda reprit: "Qu'elle garde tout: il ne faut pas qu'on se moque de nous, mais j'ai bien envoyé lechevreau que voici, et toi, tu ne l'as pas retrouvée."
24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore,she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'	24 Environ trois mois après, on avertit Juda: "Ta belle-fille Tamar, lui dit-on, s'est prostituée, elle estmême enceinte par suite de son inconduite." Alors Juda ordonna: "Qu'elle soit amenée dehors et brûlée vive!"
25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'	25 Mais, comme on l'amenait, elle envoya dire à son beau-père:"C'est de l'homme à qui appartientcela que je suis enceinte. Reconnais donc, dit-elle, à qui appartient ce sceau, ce cordon et cette canne."
26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.	26 Juda les reconnut et dit: "Elle est plus juste que moi. C'est qu'en effet je ne lui avait pas donnémon fils Shéla." Et il n'eut plus de rapports avec elle.
27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!	27 Lorsque vint le temps de ses couches, il apparut qu'elle avait dans son sein des jumeaux.
28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.	28 Pendant l'accouchement, l'un d'eux tendit la main et la sage-femme la saisit et y attacha un filécarlate, en disant:"C'est celui-là qui est sorti le premier."
29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.	29 Mais il advint qu'il retira sa main et ce fut son frère quisortit. Alors elle dit: "Comme tu t'es ouvertune brèche!" Eton l'appela Pérèç.
30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.	30 Ensuite sortit son frère, qui avait le fil écarlate à la main, et on l'appela Zérah.
