Genesis 38

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.	1 Naquele tempo, Judá, apartando-se dos seus irmãos, foi para a casa de um homem de Odolão, chamado Hira.
2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.	2 Judá viu ali a filha de um cananeu, de nome Sué, e desposou-a, unindo-se a ela.
3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.	3 Ela concebeu e deu à luz um filho, ao qual chamou Her.
4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.	4 Concebeu novamente e deu ao mundo um filho, e deu-lhe o nome de Onã.
5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.	5 E teve ainda um filho, que chamou Sela. Judá estava em Achzib na ocasião desse nascimento.
6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.	6 Judá escolheu para Her, seu primogênito, uma mulher chamada Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.	7 Her, porém, o primogênito de Judá, era mau aos olhos do Senhor, e o Senhor o feriu de morte.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, tomaintain your brother's line.'	8 Então Judá disse a Onã: "Vai, toma a mulher de teu irmão, cumpre teu dever de levirato e suscita uma posteridade a teu irmão."
9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.	9 Mas Onã, que sabia que essa posteridade não seria dele, maculava-se por terra cada vez que se unia à mulher do seu irmão, para não dar a ele posteridade.
10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.	10 Seu comportamento desagradou ao Senhor, que o feriu de morte também.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.	11 E Judá disse a Tamar, sua nora: "Conserva-te viúva em casa de teu pai até que meu filho Sela se torne adulto." "Não é bom, pensava ele consigo, que também ele morra como seus irmãos." E Tamar voltou a habitar na casa paterna.
12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.	12 Muito tempo depois, morreu a filha de Sué, mulher de Judá. Passado o luto, subiu Judá a Tamna para a tosquia de suas ovelhas, com seu amigo Hira, o odolamita.
13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'	13 E foi noticiado a Tamar: "Eis que o teu sogro sobe a Tamna para a tosquia de suas ovelhas."
14 she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat downat the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, shehad not been given to him as his wife.	14 Depôs ela então os seus vestidos de viúva, cobriu-se de um véu, e, assim disfarçada, assentou-se à entrada de Enaim, que se encontra no caminho de Tamna, pois via que Sela tinha crescido e não lha tinham dado por mulher.
15 Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.	15 Judá, vendo-a, julgou tratar-se de uma prostituta, porque tinha o rosto coberto.
16 Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was hisdaughter-in-law. 'What wil you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.	16 E, chegando-se a ela no caminho, disse: "Queres juntar-te comigo?" {Ignorava ele que se tratava de sua nora.} Ela respondeu: "O que me darás para juntar-me contigo?"
17 'I wil send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' shereplied.	17 "Mandar-te-ei um cabrito do meu rebanho." "Está bem; mas dá-me então um penhor, até que o tenhas enviado."
18 'What pledge shal I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' shereplied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.	18 "Que penhor queres que eu te dê?" "Teu anel, teu cordão e o bastão que tens na mão." Ele os entregou; em seguida, aproximou-se dela e ela concebeu.
19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.	19 E levantando-se, partiu; tirou o seu véu e retomou seus vestidos de viúva.
20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.	20 E Judá mandou-lhe o cabrito por seu amigo, o odolamita, para retirar o penhor das mãos daquela mulher, mas ele, não a encontrando,
21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.	21 perguntou aos habitantes do lugar: "Onde está aquela prostituta que estava em Enaim, à beira do caminho?" Responderam-lhe: "Não há prostituta nesse lugar!"
22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'	22 Ele voltou para junto de Judá: "Não a encontrei, disse ele, e os moradores daquele lugar disseram-me que não havia nenhuma prostituta ali."
23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'	23 "Guarde ela o meu penhor, respondeu Judá, não nos tornemos ridículos! Eu mandei o cabrito; tu, porém, não a encontraste".
24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore,she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'	24 Mais ou menos três meses depois, vieram dizer a Judá: "Tamar, tua nora, conduziu-se mal: vê-se que está grávida." Judá respondeu: "Tirai-a para fora, que ela seja queimada!"
25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'	25 E, enquanto era conduzida, ela mandou dizer ao seu sogro: "Concebi do homem a quem pertence isto: examine bem, ajuntou ela, de quem são este anel, este cordão e este bastão."
26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.	26 Judá, reconhecendo-os, exclamou: "Ela é mais justa do que eu; pois que não a dei ao meu filho Sela." E não a conheceu mais.
27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!	27 E, na ocasião de dar à luz, eis que ela trazia dois gêmeos no seu ventre.
28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.	28 No parto, saindo uma mão, a parteira tomou-a e atou nela um fio vermelho, dizendo: "Este é o que saiu primeiro!"
29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.	29 Mas, como ele retirasse a mão, saiu o seu irmão. "Que brecha fizeste! exclamou a parteira: Que a brecha esteja sobre ti!"
30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.	30 E chamou-se-lhe Farés. Em seguida, veio o seu irmão, com o fio vermelho atado na mão. Deu-se-lhe o nome de Zara.
