NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.	1 In quel tempo, Giuda si separò dai suoi fratelli e rizzò la sua tenda presso un uomo di Adullam, di nome Chira.
2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.	2 Qui Giuda vide la figlia di un uomo Cananeo, il quale si chiamava Sua; se la prese in moglie e si unì a lei.
3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.	3 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio, che egli chiamò Er.
4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.	4 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio, che chiamò Onan.
5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.	5 Ancora un'altra volta partorì un figlio, che chiamò Sela. Essa si trovava in Chezib, quando lo partorì.
6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.	6 Giuda prese una moglie per il suo primogenito Er, la quale si chiamava Tamar.
7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.	7 Ma Er, il primogenito di Giuda, era perverso agli occhi del Signore, e il Signore lo fece morire.
8 Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, tomaintain your brother's line.'	8 Allora Giuda disse a Onan: "Accostati alla moglie di tuo fratello, fa' il dovere di cognato nei suoi riguardi e fa' sussistere così una posterità per tuo fratello".
9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.	9 Ma Onan, sapendo che la prole non sarebbe stata sua, ogni volta che si univa alla moglie di suo fratello, disperdeva per terra, per non dare una posterità a suo fratello.
10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.	10 Ciò ch'egli faceva dispiacque agli occhi del Signore, che fece morire anche lui.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.	11 Allora Giuda disse alla nuora Tamar: "Ritorna a casa di tuo padre come vedova, fin quando mio figlio Sela diverrà grande". Perché temeva che anche questi morisse come gli altri fratelli! Così Tamar se ne andò e ritornò alla casa di suo padre.
12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.	12 Passarono molti giorni e morì la figlia di Sua, la moglie di Giuda. Quando Giuda ebbe finito il lutto, salì da quelli che tosavano il suo gregge a Timna, e con lui vi era Chira, il suo amico di Adullam.
13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'	13 Ne fu informata Tamar con questi termini: "Ecco che il tuo suocero sale a Timna per la tosatura del suo gregge".
14 she changed out of her widow's clothes, wrapped a veil around her to disguise herself, and sat downat the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that, although Shelah was grown up, shehad not been given to him as his wife.	14 Allora Tamar svestì i suoi abiti vedovili, si coprì con un velo, si profumò, poi si pose seduta alla porta di Enaim, che è sulla strada verso Timna. Aveva visto infatti che Sela era ormai diventato adulto, ma lei non gli era stata data in moglie.
15 Judah, seeing her, took her for a prostitute, since her face was veiled.	15 Giuda la vide e la credette una meretrice, perché essa si era coperta la faccia.
16 Going up to her on the road, he said, 'Here, let me sleep with you.' He did not know that she was hisdaughter-in-law. 'What wil you give me for sleeping with you?' she asked.	16 Egli deviò il cammino verso di lei e disse: "Suvvia, permetti che io mi accosti a te!". Non sapeva infatti che quella fosse la sua nuora. Essa disse: "Che cosa mi darai per accostarti a me?".
17 'I wil send you a kid from the flock,' he said. 'Agreed, if you give me a pledge until you send it,' shereplied.	17 Rispose: "Io ti manderò un capretto del gregge". Essa riprese: "Se tu mi dai un pegno fin quando me lo manderai...".
18 'What pledge shal I give you?' he asked. 'Your seal and cord and the staff you are holding,' shereplied. He gave them to her and slept with her, and she conceived by him.	18 Egli disse: "Qual è il pegno che ti devo dare?". Rispose: "Il tuo sigillo, il tuo cordone e il bastone che hai in mano". Giuda glieli diede, le si accostò, ed essa concepì da lui.
19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.	19 Poi essa si levò e se ne andò; si tolse di dosso il velo e si rivestì dei suoi abiti vedovili.
20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.	20 Giuda poi mandò il capretto per mezzo del suo amico di Adullam, per riprendere il pegno dalle mani di quella donna, ma quello non la trovò.
21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.	21 Domandò agli uomini di quel luogo: "Dov'è quella prostituta che stava in Enaim sulla strada?". Essi risposero: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".
22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'	22 Così tornò da Giuda e disse: "Non l'ho trovata, e anche gli uomini del luogo dicevano: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".
23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'	23 Allora Giuda disse: "Si tenga per sé il pegno e noi non si sia nel disprezzo. Vedi bene che le ho mandato questo capretto, ma tu non l'hai trovata".
24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore,she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'	24 Or avvenne, circa tre mesi dopo, che fu portata a Giuda una notizia in questi termini: "Si è prostituita tua nuora Tamar, ed anzi è incinta in conseguenza della sua prostituzione". Giuda rispose: "Conducetela fuori e sia bruciata!".
25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'	25 Mentre la si faceva uscire, essa mandò a dire al suocero: "L'uomo, a cui appartengono questi oggetti, mi ha reso incinta". E aggiunse: "Riscontra, di grazia, di chi siano questo sigillo, questi cordoni e questo bastone".
26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.	26 Allora Giuda li riconobbe e disse: "Essa è più giusta di me. Infatti è perché io non l'ho data al mio figlio Sela". E non ebbe più rapporti con lei.
27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!	27 Quando essa fu giunta al momento di partorire, ecco che aveva nel ventre due gemelli.
28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.	28 Durante il parto uno di loro mise fuori una mano e la levatrice prese un filo scarlatto e lo legò attorno a quella mano, dicendo: "E' questo che è uscito per primo".
29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.	29 Ma quando questo ritirò la sua mano, ecco che uscì suo fratello. Allora essa disse: "Come ti sei aperta una breccia?" e lo si chiamò Perez.
30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.	30 Poi uscì suo fratello, che aveva il filo scarlatto attorno alla mano e lo si chiamò Zerach.
