Genesis 23

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The length of Sarah's life was a hundred and twenty-seven years.	1 Sara vivió ciento veintisiete años,
2 She died at Kiriath-Arba -- now Hebron -- in the land of Canaan, and Abraham proceeded to mournand bewail her.	2 y murió en Quiriat Arbá –actualmente Hebrón– en la tierra de Canaán. Abraham estuvo de duelo por Sara y lloró su muerte.
3 Then rising from beside his dead, Abraham spoke to the Hittites,	3 Después se retiró del lugar donde estaba el cadáver, y dijo a los descendientes de Het:
4 'I am a stranger resident here,' he said. 'Let me have a burial site of my own here, so that I canremove my dead for burial.'	4 «Aunque yo no soy más que un extranjero residente entre ustedes, cédanme en propiedad alguno de sus sepulcros, para que pueda retirar el cadáver de mi esposa y darle sepultura».
5 The Hittites replied to Abraham,	5 Pero los descendientes de Het respondieron a Abraham: «Por favor,
6 'Please listen to us, my lord, we regard you as a prince of God; bury your dead in the best of ourtombs; not one of us would refuse you his tomb for you to bury your dead.'	6 señor, escúchanos. Tú eres un privilegiado de Dios en medio de nosotros. Sepulta a tu esposa en la mejor de nuestras tumbas, ya que ninguno de nosotros te negará un sepulcro para que la entierres».
7 At this, Abraham rose and bowed low to the local people, the Hittites,	7 Abraham se levantó, e inclinándose profundamente ante la gente del lugar, ante los descendientes de Het,
8 and pleaded with them as fol ows, 'If you consent to my removing my dead for burial, you must agreeto intercede for me with Ephron son of Zohar,	8 les insistió, diciendo: «Si ustedes quieren realmente que yo sepulte el cadáver, háganme el favor de interceder ante Efrón, hijo de Sójar,
9 for him to let me have the cave he owns at Machpelah, which is on the edge of his field. Let him sel itto me in your presence at its ful price, for a burial site of my own.'	9 para que me venda la caverna de Macpelá, que él tiene en el extremo de su campo. Que me la ceda por su valor real, para que yo la posea como sepulcro familiar en medio de ustedes».
10 Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearingof the Hittites, of al the inhabitants of his town.	10 Efrón –que estaba presente entre los descendientes de Het– teniendo por testigos a todos los que entraban por la puerta de la ciudad respondió a Abraham:
11 'No, my lord, listen to me,' he said. 'I give you the field and the cave in it; I make this gift in thepresence of my kinsmen. Bury your dead.'	11 «No, señor, escúchame bien: yo te doy el campo y también la caverna que hay en él. Te la doy en presencia de mis compatriotas, para que entierres a tu esposa».
12 Abraham bowed low to the local people	12 Abraham volvió a inclinarse y profundamente ante la gente del lugar,
13 and, in the hearing of the local people, replied to Ephron as fol ows, 'Be good enough to listen to me.I shal pay the price of the field; accept it from me and I shal bury my dead there.'	13 y teniendo a estos por testigos, dijo a Efrón: «Si estás dispuesto a llegar a un acuerdo conmigo, te pagaré el precio del campo. Acéptalo, para que yo entierre allí a mi esposa».
14 Ephron replied to Abraham,	14 Entonces Efrón respondió a Abraham: «Por favor,
15 'Please listen to me, my lord. What is a plot of land for four hundred shekels of silver between meand you? Bury your dead.'	15 escúchame, señor. El campo vale cuatrocientos siclos de plata, pero ¿qué es esa suma para personas como tú y yo? Entierra a tu esposa».
16 Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver he hadstipulated in the hearing of the Hittites, namely four hundred shekels of silver, according to the currentcommercial rate.	16 Abraham aceptó la propuesta de Efrón, y teniendo por testigos a los descendientes de Het, pesó la cantidad que aquel le había fijado: cuatrocientos siclos de plata, según la tasación corriente entre los comerciantes.
17 Thus Ephron's field at Machpelah, facing Mamre -- the field and the cave in it and al the treesanywhere within the boundaries of the field -- passed	17 De este modo, el campo de Efrón en Macpelá, frente a Mamré –el campo con la caverna y todos los árboles que estaban dentro de sus límites– pasó a ser
18 into Abraham's possession in the sight of the Hittites, of al the inhabitants of his town.	18 propiedad de Abraham, teniendo por testigos a todos los descendientes de Het que pasaban por la puerta de la ciudad.
19 And after this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre --now Hebron -- in the land of Canaan.	19 Luego Abraham enterró a Sara en la caverna del campo de Macpelá, frente a Mamré, en el país de Canaán.
20 And so the field and the cave in it passed from the Hittites into Abraham's possession as a burial siteof his own.	20 Así adquirió Abraham a los descendientes de Het el campo y la caverna que hay en él, para tenerlo como sepulcro familiar.
