NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 The length of Sarah's life was a hundred and twenty-seven years.	1 Sara atteignit l’âge de 127 ans.
2 She died at Kiriath-Arba -- now Hebron -- in the land of Canaan, and Abraham proceeded to mournand bewail her.	2 Elle mourut à Kiryat-Arba, c’est-à-dire Hébron, au pays de Canaan. Abraham vint pleurer Sara et en fit le deuil.
3 Then rising from beside his dead, Abraham spoke to the Hittites,	3 Laissant là le corps, Abraham alla parler aux fils de Heth. Il leur dit:
4 'I am a stranger resident here,' he said. 'Let me have a burial site of my own here, so that I canremove my dead for burial.'	4 “Je ne suis qu’un étranger résidant au milieu de vous, mais donnez-moi une tombe chez vous et qu’elle soit ma propriété: j’y enterrerai ma défunte.”
5 The Hittites replied to Abraham,	5 Les fils de Heth répondirent ainsi à Abraham:
6 'Please listen to us, my lord, we regard you as a prince of God; bury your dead in the best of ourtombs; not one of us would refuse you his tomb for you to bury your dead.'	6 “Écoute-nous, mon seigneur, tu es un prince de Dieu au milieu de nous. Dépose donc ta défunte dans celle de nos tombes que tu voudras; personne parmi nous ne te refusera sa tombe pour l’enterrer.”
7 At this, Abraham rose and bowed low to the local people, the Hittites,	7 Abraham se leva et s’inclina devant les gens du pays, devant les fils de Heth.
8 and pleaded with them as fol ows, 'If you consent to my removing my dead for burial, you must agreeto intercede for me with Ephron son of Zohar,	8 Puis il s’adressa à eux et leur dit: “Si vous êtes d’accord pour qu’on enterre celle que j’ai perdue, écoutez-moi et insistez pour moi auprès d’Éfron, fils de Sokar,
9 for him to let me have the cave he owns at Machpelah, which is on the edge of his field. Let him sel itto me in your presence at its ful price, for a burial site of my own.'	9 pour qu’il me cède la grotte de Makpéla qui lui appartient et qui se trouve au bout de son champ. Qu’il me la donne contre sa valeur en argent, et que cette tombe devienne ma propriété au milieu de vous.”
10 Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearingof the Hittites, of al the inhabitants of his town.	10 Éfron était assis au milieu des fils de Heth. Éfron le Hittite répondit à Abraham de manière à être entendu des fils de Heth, de tous ceux qui passaient par la porte de la ville:
11 'No, my lord, listen to me,' he said. 'I give you the field and the cave in it; I make this gift in thepresence of my kinsmen. Bury your dead.'	11 “Non, mon seigneur, écoute-moi: je te donne le champ et aussi la grotte qui s’y trouve. Je te fais ce don devant les fils de mon peuple: enterre ta défunte.”
12 Abraham bowed low to the local people	12 Abraham s’inclina devant les gens du pays
13 and, in the hearing of the local people, replied to Ephron as fol ows, 'Be good enough to listen to me.I shal pay the price of the field; accept it from me and I shal bury my dead there.'	13 et il dit à Éfron, de manière à être entendu des gens du pays: “Écoute-moi, s’il te plaît. Je donne l’argent pour le champ; accepte-le de ma main. Ainsi je pourrai enterrer celle que j’ai perdue.”
14 Ephron replied to Abraham,	14 Éfron répondit à Abraham:
15 'Please listen to me, my lord. What is a plot of land for four hundred shekels of silver between meand you? Bury your dead.'	15 “Écoute-moi, mon seigneur, quelle affaire entre toi et moi ce terrain qui ne vaut que 400 pièces d’argent? Enterres-y ta défunte!”
16 Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver he hadstipulated in the hearing of the Hittites, namely four hundred shekels of silver, according to the currentcommercial rate.	16 Abraham écouta Éfron, et il pesa pour Éfron la somme qu’il avait dite en présence des fils de Heth, soit 400 pièces d’argent ayant cours chez les marchands.
17 Thus Ephron's field at Machpelah, facing Mamre -- the field and the cave in it and al the treesanywhere within the boundaries of the field -- passed	17 Ainsi le champ d’Éfron qui se trouve à Makpéla en face de Mambré, le champ et la grotte qui s’y trouve, avec tous les arbres qui sont dans le champ sur toute sa surface,
18 into Abraham's possession in the sight of the Hittites, of al the inhabitants of his town.	18 furent cédés à Abraham devant les fils de Heth, devant tous ceux qui passaient par la porte de la ville.
19 And after this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre --now Hebron -- in the land of Canaan.	19 Alors Abraham prit Sara sa femme et l’enterra dans la grotte du champ de Makpéla face à Mambré, c’est-à-dire Hébron, au pays de Canaan.
20 And so the field and the cave in it passed from the Hittites into Abraham's possession as a burial siteof his own.	20 Le champ et la grotte qui s’y trouve furent cédés par les fils de Heth à Abraham comme propriété funéraire.
