NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
It happened some time later that God put Abraham to the test. 'Abraham, Abraham!' he called. 'Here Iam,' he replied.1 Quæ postquam gesta sunt, tentavit Deus Abraham, et dixit ad eum : Abraham, Abraham. At ille respondit : Adsum.
God said, 'Take your son, your only son, your beloved Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, where youare to offer him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I shal point out to you.'2 Ait illi : Tolle filium tuum unigenitum, quem diligis, Isaac, et vade in terram visionis, atque ibi offeres eum in holocaustum super unum montium quem monstravero tibi.
Early next morning Abraham saddled his donkey and took with him two of his servants and his sonIsaac. He chopped wood for the burnt offering and started on his journey to the place which God had indicated tohim.3 Igitur Abraham de nocte consurgens, stravit asinum suum, ducens secum duos juvenes, et Isaac filium suum : cumque concidisset ligna in holocaustum, abiit ad locum quem præceperat ei Deus.
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.4 Die autem tertio, elevatis oculis, vidit locum procul :
Then Abraham said to his servants, 'Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I are going over there;we shal worship and then come back to you.'5 dixitque ad pueros suos : Expectate hic cum asino : ego et puer illuc usque properantes, postquam adoraverimus, revertemur ad vos.
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, loaded it on Isaac, and carried in his own hands the fireand the knife. Then the two of them set out together.6 Tulit quoque ligna holocausti, et imposuit super Isaac filium suum : ipse vero portabat in manibus ignem et gladium. Cumque duo pergerent simul,
Isaac spoke to his father Abraham. 'Father?' he said. 'Yes, my son,' he replied. 'Look,' he said, 'hereare the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?'7 dixit Isaac patri suo : Pater mi. At ille respondit : Quid vis, fili ? Ecce, inquit, ignis et ligna : ubi est victima holocausti ?
Abraham replied, 'My son, God himself wil provide the lamb for the burnt offering.' And the two ofthem went on together.8 Dixit autem Abraham : Deus providebit sibi victimam holocausti, fili mi. Pergebant ergo pariter.
When they arrived at the place which God had indicated to him, Abraham built an altar there, andarranged the wood. Then he bound his son and put him on the altar on top of the wood.9 Et venerunt ad locum quem ostenderat ei Deus, in quo ædificavit altare, et desuper ligna composuit ; cumque alligasset Isaac filium suum, posuit eum in altare super struem lignorum.
Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.10 Extenditque manum, et arripuit gladium, ut immolaret filium suum.
But the angel of Yahweh cal ed to him from heaven. 'Abraham, Abraham!' he said. 'Here I am,' hereplied.11 Et ecce angelus Domini de cælo clamavit, dicens : Abraham, Abraham. Qui respondit : Adsum.
'Do not raise your hand against the boy,' the angel said. 'Do not harm him, for now I know you fearGod. You have not refused me your own beloved son.'12 Dixitque ei : Non extendas manum tuam super puerum, neque facias illi quidquam : nunc cognovi quod times Deum, et non pepercisti unigenito filio tuo propter me.
Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram andoffered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.13 Levavit Abraham oculos suos, viditque post tergum arietem inter vepres hærentem cornibus, quem assumens obtulit holocaustum pro filio.
Abraham cal ed this place 'Yahweh provides', and hence the saying today: 'On the mountain Yahwehprovides.'14 Appellavitque nomen loci illius, Dominus videt. Unde usque hodie dicitur : In monte Dominus videbit.
The angel of Yahweh cal ed Abraham a second time from heaven.15 Vocavit autem angelus Domini Abraham secundo de cælo, dicens :
'I swear by my own self, Yahweh declares, that because you have done this, because you have notrefused me your own beloved son,16 Per memetipsum juravi, dicit Dominus : quia fecisti hanc rem, et non pepercisti filio tuo unigenito propter me :
I wil shower blessings on you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven andthe grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants wil gain possession of the gates of their enemies.17 benedicam tibi, et multiplicabo semen tuum sicut stellas cæli, et velut arenam quæ est in littore maris : possidebit semen tuum portas inimicorum suorum,
Al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed mycommand.'18 et benedicentur in semine tuo omnes gentes terræ, quia obedisti voci meæ.
Abraham went back to his servants, and together they set out for Beersheba, and Abraham settled inBeersheba.19 Reversus est Abraham ad pueros suos, abieruntque Bersabee simul, et habitavit ibi.
It happened some time later that Abraham received word that Milcah, too, had now borne sons to hisbrother Nahor:20 His ita gestis, nuntiatum est Abrahæ quod Melcha quoque genuisset filios Nachor fratri suo :
Uz his first-born, Buz his brother, Kemuel father of Aram,21 Hus primogenitum, et Buz fratrem ejus, et Camuel patrem Syrorum,
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, Bethuel22 et Cased, et Azau, Pheldas quoque et Jedlaph,
(and Bethuel was the father of Rebekah). These were the eight children Milcah gave Nahor,Abraham's brother.23 ac Bathuel, de quo nata est Rebecca : octo istos genuit Melcha, Nachor fratri Abrahæ.
He had a concubine named Reumah, and she too had children: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash andMaacah.24 Concubina vero illius, nomine Roma, peperit Tabee, et Gaham, et Thahas, et Maacha.
