Genesis 12

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 Yahweh said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for a country whichI shal show you;	1 ויאמר יהוה אל אברם לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ומבית אביך אל הארץ אשר אראך
2 and I shal make you a great nation, I shal bless you and make your name famous; you are to be ablessing!	2 ואעשך לגוי גדול ואברכך ואגדלה שמך והיה ברכה
3 I shal bless those who bless you, and shal curse those who curse you, and al clans on earth willbless themselves by you.'	3 ואברכה מברכיך ומקללך אאר ונברכו בך כל משפחת האדמה
4 So Abram went as Yahweh told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old whenhe left Haran.	4 וילך אברם כאשר דבר אליו יהוה וילך אתו לוט ואברם בן חמש שנים ושבעים שנה בצאתו מחרן
5 Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had amassed and the people theyhad acquired in Haran. They set off for the land of Canaan, and arrived there.	5 ויקח אברם את שרי אשתו ואת לוט בן אחיו ואת כל רכושם אשר רכשו ואת הנפש אשר עשו בחרן ויצאו ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו ארצה כנען
6 Abram passed through the country as far as the holy place at Shechem, the Oak of Moreh. TheCanaanites were in the country at the time.	6 ויעבר אברם בארץ עד מקום שכם עד אלון מורה והכנעני אז בארץ
7 Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, 'I shal give this country to your progeny.' And there, Abrambuilt an altar to Yahweh who had appeared to him.	7 וירא יהוה אל אברם ויאמר לזרעך אתן את הארץ הזאת ויבן שם מזבח ליהוה הנראה אליו
8 From there he moved on to the mountainous district east of Bethel, where he pitched his tent, withBethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and invoked the name of Yahweh.	8 ויעתק משם ההרה מקדם לבית אל ויט אהלה בית אל מים והעי מקדם ויבן שם מזבח ליהוה ויקרא בשם יהוה
9 Then Abram made his way stage by stage to the Negeb.	9 ויסע אברם הלוך ונסוע הנגבה
10 There was a famine in the country, and Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a time, since thefamine in the country was severe.	10 ויהי רעב בארץ וירד אברם מצרימה לגור שם כי כבד הרעב בארץ
11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, 'Look, I know you are a beautifulwoman.	11 ויהי כאשר הקריב לבוא מצרימה ויאמר אל שרי אשתו הנה נא ידעתי כי אשה יפת מראה את
12 When the Egyptians see you they wil say, "That is his wife," and they wil kil me but leave you alive.	12 והיה כי יראו אתך המצרים ואמרו אשתו זאת והרגו אתי ואתך יחיו
13 Therefore please tell them you are my sister, so that they may treat me wel because of you andspare my life out of regard for you.'	13 אמרי נא אחתי את למען ייטב לי בעבורך וחיתה נפשי בגללך
14 When Abram arrived in Egypt the Egyptians did indeed see that the woman was very beautiful.	14 ויהי כבוא אברם מצרימה ויראו המצרים את האשה כי יפה הוא מאד
15 When Pharaoh's officials saw her they sang her praises to Pharaoh and the woman was taken intoPharaoh's household.	15 ויראו אתה שרי פרעה ויהללו אתה אל פרעה ותקח האשה בית פרעה
16 And Abram was very well treated because of her and received flocks, oxen, donkeys, men andwomen slaves, she-donkeys and camels.	16 ולאברם היטיב בעבורה ויהי לו צאן ובקר וחמרים ועבדים ושפחת ואתנת וגמלים
17 But Yahweh inflicted severe plagues on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai.	17 וינגע יהוה את פרעה נגעים גדלים ואת ביתו על דבר שרי אשת אברם
18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, 'What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell meshe was your wife?	18 ויקרא פרעה לאברם ויאמר מה זאת עשית לי למה לא הגדת לי כי אשתך הוא
19 Why did you say, "She is my sister," so that I took her to be my wife? Now, here is your wife. Takeher and go!'	19 למה אמרת אחתי הוא ואקח אתה לי לאשה ועתה הנה אשתך קח ולך
20 And Pharaoh gave his people orders about him; they sent him on his way with his wife and al hispossessions.	20 ויצו עליו פרעה אנשים וישלחו אתו ואת אשתו ואת כל אשר לו
