NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 In the beginning God created heaven and earth.	1 בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ
2 Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, with a divine wind sweepingover the waters.	2 והארץ היתה תהו ובהו וחשך על פני תהום ורוח אלהים מרחפת על פני המים
3 God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light.	3 ויאמר אלהים יהי אור ויהי אור
4 God saw that light was good, and God divided light from darkness.	4 וירא אלהים את האור כי טוב ויבדל אלהים בין האור ובין החשך
5 God cal ed light 'day', and darkness he called 'night'. Evening came and morning came: the first day.	5 ויקרא אלהים לאור יום ולחשך קרא לילה ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום אחד
6 God said, 'Let there be a vault through the middle of the waters to divide the waters in two.' And so itwas.	6 ויאמר אלהים יהי רקיע בתוך המים ויהי מבדיל בין מים למים
7 God made the vault, and it divided the waters under the vault from the waters above the vault.	7 ויעש אלהים את הרקיע ויבדל בין המים אשר מתחת לרקיע ובין המים אשר מעל לרקיע ויהי כן
8 God cal ed the vault 'heaven'. Evening came and morning came: the second day.	8 ויקרא אלהים לרקיע שמים ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום שני
9 God said, 'Let the waters under heaven come together into a single mass, and let dry land appear.' Andso it was.	9 ויאמר אלהים יקוו המים מתחת השמים אל מקום אחד ותראה היבשה ויהי כן
10 God cal ed the dry land 'earth' and the mass of waters 'seas', and God saw that it was good.	10 ויקרא אלהים ליבשה ארץ ולמקוה המים קרא ימים וירא אלהים כי טוב
11 God said, 'Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees on earth, bearing fruitwith their seed inside, each corresponding to its own species.' And so it was.	11 ויאמר אלהים תדשא הארץ דשא עשב מזריע זרע עץ פרי עשה פרי למינו אשר זרעו בו על הארץ ויהי כן
12 The earth produced vegetation: the various kinds of seed-bearing plants and the fruit trees with seedinside, each corresponding to its own species. God saw that it was good.	12 ותוצא הארץ דשא עשב מזריע זרע למינהו ועץ עשה פרי אשר זרעו בו למינהו וירא אלהים כי טוב
13 Evening came and morning came: the third day.	13 ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום שלישי
14 God said, 'Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to divide day from night, and let them indicatefestivals, days and years.	14 ויאמר אלהים יהי מארת ברקיע השמים להבדיל בין היום ובין הלילה והיו לאתת ולמועדים ולימים ושנים
15 Let them be lights in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth.' And so it was.	15 והיו למאורת ברקיע השמים להאיר על הארץ ויהי כן
16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to govern the day, the smal er light to govern thenight, and the stars.	16 ויעש אלהים את שני המארת הגדלים את המאור הגדל לממשלת היום ואת המאור הקטן לממשלת הלילה ואת הכוכבים
17 God set them in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth,	17 ויתן אתם אלהים ברקיע השמים להאיר על הארץ
18 to govern the day and the night and to divide light from darkness. God saw that it was good.	18 ולמשל ביום ובלילה ולהבדיל בין האור ובין החשך וירא אלהים כי טוב
19 Evening came and morning came: the fourth day.	19 ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום רביעי
20 God said, 'Let the waters be alive with a swarm of living creatures, and let birds wing their way abovethe earth across the vault of heaven.' And so it was.	20 ויאמר אלהים ישרצו המים שרץ נפש חיה ועוף יעופף על הארץ על פני רקיע השמים
21 God created great sea-monsters and al the creatures that glide and teem in the waters in their ownspecies, and winged birds in their own species. God saw that it was good.	21 ויברא אלהים את התנינם הגדלים ואת כל נפש החיה הרמשת אשר שרצו המים למינהם ואת כל עוף כנף למינהו וירא אלהים כי טוב
22 God blessed them, saying, 'Be fruitful, multiply, and fil the waters of the seas; and let the birdsmultiply on land.'	22 ויברך אתם אלהים לאמר פרו ורבו ומלאו את המים בימים והעוף ירב בארץ
23 Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.	23 ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום חמישי
24 God said, 'Let the earth produce every kind of living creature in its own species: cattle, creeping thingsand wild animals of al kinds.' And so it was.	24 ויאמר אלהים תוצא הארץ נפש חיה למינה בהמה ורמש וחיתו ארץ למינה ויהי כן
25 God made wild animals in their own species, and cattle in theirs, and every creature that crawls alongthe earth in its own species. God saw that it was good.	25 ויעש אלהים את חית הארץ למינה ואת הבהמה למינה ואת כל רמש האדמה למינהו וירא אלהים כי טוב
26 God said, 'Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be mastersof the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, al the wild animals and al the creatures that creep alongthe ground.'	26 ויאמר אלהים נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו וירדו בדגת הים ובעוף השמים ובבהמה ובכל הארץ ובכל הרמש הרמש על הארץ
27 God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female hecreated them.	27 ויברא אלהים את האדם בצלמו בצלם אלהים ברא אתו זכר ונקבה ברא אתם
28 God blessed them, saying to them, 'Be fruitful, multiply, fil the earth and subdue it. Be masters of thefish of the sea, the birds of heaven and al the living creatures that move on earth.'	28 ויברך אתם אלהים ויאמר להם אלהים פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ וכבשה ורדו בדגת הים ובעוף השמים ובכל חיה הרמשת על הארץ
29 God also said, 'Look, to you I give all the seed-bearing plants everywhere on the surface of the earth,and all the trees with seed-bearing fruit; this wil be your food.	29 ויאמר אלהים הנה נתתי לכם את כל עשב זרע זרע אשר על פני כל הארץ ואת כל העץ אשר בו פרי עץ זרע זרע לכם יהיה לאכלה
30 And to al the wild animals, al the birds of heaven and al the living creatures that creep along theground, I give all the foliage of the plants as their food.' And so it was.	30 ולכל חית הארץ ולכל עוף השמים ולכל רומש על הארץ אשר בו נפש חיה את כל ירק עשב לאכלה ויהי כן
31 God saw al he had made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and morning came: the sixthday.	31 וירא אלהים את כל אשר עשה והנה טוב מאד ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום הששי
