NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake of the faith of God's chosen ones and the recognition of religious truth,1 Paulus servus Dei, apostolus autem Iesu Christi secundum fi dem electorumDei et agnitionem veritatis, quae secundum pietatem est
in the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before time began,2 in spem vitaeaeternae, quam promisit, qui non mentitur, Deus ante tempora saecularia;
who indeed at the proper time revealed his word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted by the command of God our savior,3 manifestavit autem temporibus suis verbum suum in praedicatione, quae creditaest mihi secundum praeceptum salvatoris nostri Dei,
to Titus, my true child in our common faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our savior.4 Tito germano filiosecundum communem fidem: gratia et pax a Deo Patre et Christo Iesu salvatorenostro.
For this reason I left you in Crete so that you might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in every town, as I directed you,5 Huius rei gratia reliqui te Cretae, ut ea, quae desunt, corrigas et constituasper civitates presbyteros, sicut ego tibi disposui,
on condition that a man be blameless, married only once, with believing children who are not accused of licentiousness or rebellious.6 si quis sine crimine est,unius uxoris vir, filios habens fideles, non in accusatione luxuriae aut nonsubiectos.
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain,7 Oportet enim episcopum sine crimine esse sicut Dei dispensatorem,non superbum, non iracundum, non vinolentum, non percussorem, non turpis lucricupidum,
but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled,8 sed hospitalem, benignum, sobrium, iustum, sanctum, continentem,
holding fast to the true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to refute opponents.9 amplectentem eum, qui secundum doctrinam est, fidelem sermonem, ut potens sit etexhortari in doctrina sana et eos, qui contradicunt, arguere.
For there are also many rebels, idle talkers and deceivers, especially the Jewish Christians.10 Sunt enim multi et non subiecti, vaniloqui et seductores, maxime qui decircumcisione sunt,
It is imperative to silence them, as they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what they should not.11 quibus oportet silentium imponere, quia universas domossubvertunt docentes, quae non oportet, turpis lucri gratia.
One of them, a prophet of their own, once said, "Cretans have always been liars, vicious beasts, and lazy gluttons."12 Dixit quidam exillis, proprius ipsorum propheta: “ Cretenses semper mendaces, malae bestiae,ventres pigri ”.
That testimony is true. Therefore, admonish them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith,13 Testimonium hoc verum est. Quam ob causam increpa illosdure, ut sani sint in fide,
instead of paying attention to Jewish myths and regulations of people who have repudiated the truth.14 non intendentes Iudaicis fabulis et mandatishominum aversantium veritatem.
To the clean all things are clean, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is clean; in fact, both their minds and their consciences are tainted.15 Omnia munda mundis; coinquinatis autem et infidelibus nihil mundum, sedinquinatae sunt eorum et mens et conscientia.
They claim to know God, but by their deeds they deny him. They are vile and disobedient and unqualified for any good deed.16 Confitentur se nosse Deum, factis autem negant, cum sunt abominati etinoboedientes et ad omne opus bonum reprobi.
