Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake of the faith of God's chosen ones and the recognition of religious truth,1 Pablo, siervo de Dios, apóstol de Jesucristo para llevar a los escogidos de Dios a la fe y al pleno conocimiento de la verdad que es conforme a la piedad,
in the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before time began,2 con la esperanza de vida eterna, prometida desde toda la eternidad por Dios que no miente,
who indeed at the proper time revealed his word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted by the command of God our savior,3 y que en el tiempo oportuno ha manifestado su Palabra por la predicación a mí encomendada según el mandato de Dios nuestro Salvador,
to Titus, my true child in our common faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our savior.4 a Tito, verdadero hijo según la fe común. Gracia y paz de parte de Dios Padre y de Cristo Jesús, nuestro Salvador.
For this reason I left you in Crete so that you might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in every town, as I directed you,5 El motivo de haberte dejado en Creta, fue para que acabaras de organizar lo que faltaba y establecieras presbíteros en cada ciudad, como yo te ordené.
on condition that a man be blameless, married only once, with believing children who are not accused of licentiousness or rebellious.6 El candidato debe ser irreprochable, casado una sola vez, cuyos hijos sean creyentes, no tachados de libertinaje ni de rebeldía.
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain,7 Porque el epíscopo, como administrador de Dios, debe ser irreprochable; no arrogante, no colérico, no bebedor, no violento, no dado a negocios sucios;
but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled,8 sino hospitalario, amigo del bien, sensato, justo, piadoso, dueño de sí.
holding fast to the true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to refute opponents.9 Que esté adherido a la palabra fiel, conforme a la enseñanza, para que sea capaz de exhortar con la sana doctrina y refutar a los que contradicen.
For there are also many rebels, idle talkers and deceivers, especially the Jewish Christians.10 Porque hay muchos rebeldes, vanos habladores y embaucadores, sobre todo entre los de la circuncisión,
It is imperative to silence them, as they are upsetting whole families by teaching for sordid gain what they should not.11 a quienes es menester tapar la boca; hombres que trastornan familias enteras, enseñando por torpe ganancia lo que no deben.
One of them, a prophet of their own, once said, "Cretans have always been liars, vicious beasts, and lazy gluttons."12 Uno de ellos, profeta suyo, dijo: «Los cretenses son siempre mentirosos, malas bestias, vientres perezosos».
That testimony is true. Therefore, admonish them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith,13 Este testimonio es verdadero. Por tanto repréndeles severamente, a fin de que conserven sana la fe,
instead of paying attention to Jewish myths and regulations of people who have repudiated the truth.14 y no den oídos a fábulas judaicas, ni a mandamientos de hombres que se apartan de la verdad.
To the clean all things are clean, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is clean; in fact, both their minds and their consciences are tainted.15 Para los limpios todo es limpio; mas para los contaminados e incrédulos nada hay limpio, pues su mente y conciencia están contaminadas.
They claim to know God, but by their deeds they deny him. They are vile and disobedient and unqualified for any good deed.16 Profesan conocer a Dios, mas con sus obras le niegan; son abominables y rebeldes e incapaces de toda obra buena.
