NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
After this the Lord appointed seventy (-two) others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.1 Post haec autem designavit Dominus alios septuaginta duos et misit illosbinos ante faciem suam in omnem civitatem et locum, quo erat ipse venturus.
He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.2 Etdicebat illis: “ Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci; rogate ergoDominum messis, ut mittat operarios in messem suam.
Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.3 Ite; ecce ego mitto vossicut agnos inter lupos.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.4 Nolite portare sacculum neque peram neque calceamentaet neminem per viam salutaveritis.
Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.'5 In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primumdicite: “Pax huic domui”.
If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.6 Et si ibi fuerit filius pacis, requiescet superillam pax vestra; sin autem, ad vos revertetur.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.7 In eadem autem domo maneteedentes et bibentes, quae apud illos sunt: dignus enim est operarius mercedesua. Nolite transire de domo in domum.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,8 Et in quamcumque civitatemintraveritis, et susceperint vos, manducate, quae apponuntur vobis,
cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'9 et curateinfirmos, qui in illa sunt, et dicite illis: “Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei”.
Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,10 In quamcumque civitatem intraveritis, et non receperint vos, exeuntes inplateas eius dicite:
'The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.11 “Etiam pulverem, qui adhaesit nobis ad pedes decivitate vestra, extergimus in vos; tamen hoc scitote, quia appropinquavitregnum Dei”.
I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town.12 Dico vobis quia Sodomis in die illa remissius erit quam illicivitati.
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.13 Vae tibi, Chorazin! Vae tibi, Bethsaida! Quia si in Tyro et Sidonefactae fuissent virtutes, quae in vobis factae sunt, olim in cilicio et cineresedentes paeniterent.
But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.14 Verumtamen Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in iudicioquam vobis.
And as for you, Capernaum, 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.'"15 Et tu, Capharnaum, numquid usque in caelum exaltaberis? Usque ad infernumdemergeris!
Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."16 Qui vos audit, me audit; et, qui vos spernit, me spernit; qui autem mespernit, spernit eum, qui me misit ”.
The seventy (-two) returned rejoicing, and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name."17 Reversi sunt autem septuaginta duo cum gaudio dicentes: “ Domine, etiamdaemonia subiciuntur nobis in nomine tuo! ”.
Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.18 Et ait illis: “ VidebamSatanam sicut fulgur de caelo cadentem.
Behold, I have given you the power 'to tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.19 Ecce dedi vobis potestatem calcandisupra serpentes et scorpiones et supra omnem virtutem inimici; et nihil vobisnocebit.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven."20 Verumtamen in hoc nolite gaudere, quia spiritus vobis subiciuntur;gaudete autem quod nomina vestra scripta sunt in caelis ”.
At that very moment he rejoiced (in) the holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.21 In ipsa hora exsultavit Spiritu Sancto et dixit: “ Confiteor tibi, Pater,Domine caeli et terrae, quod abscondisti haec a sapientibus et prudentibus etrevelasti ea parvulis; etiam, Pater, quia sic placuit ante te.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."22 Omnia mihitradita sunt a Patre meo; et nemo scit qui sit Filius, nisi Pater, et qui sitPater, nisi Filius et cui voluerit Filius revelare ”.
Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.23 Et conversus ad discipulos seorsum dixit: “ Beati oculi, qui vident, quaevidetis.
For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."24 Dico enim vobis: Multi prophetae et reges voluerunt videre, quae vosvidetis, et non viderunt, et audire, quae auditis, et non audierunt ”.
There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"25 Et ecce quidam legis peritus surrexit tentans illum dicens: “ Magister, quid faciendo vitam aeternam possidebo? ”.
Jesus said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?"26 At ille dixit ad eum: “ InLege quid scriptum est? Quomodo legis? ”.
He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."27 Ille autem respondens dixit: “Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo et ex tota anima tua et ex omnibusviribus tuis et ex omni mente tua et proximum tuum sicut teipsum ”.
He replied to him, "You have answered correctly; do this and you will live."28 Dixitque illi: “ Recte respondisti; hoc fac et vives ”.
But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"29 Ille autem, volens iustificare seipsum, dixit ad Iesum: “ Et quis est meus proximus? ”.
Jesus replied, "A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.30 Suscipiens autem Iesus dixit: “ Homo quidam descendebat ab Ierusalem inIericho et incidit in latrones, qui etiam despoliaverunt eum et, plagisimpositis, abierunt, semivivo relicto.
A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.31 Accidit autem, ut sacerdos quidamdescenderet eadem via et, viso illo, praeterivit;
Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.32 similiter et Levita, cumesset secus locum et videret eum, pertransiit.
But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.33 Samaritanus autem quidam iterfaciens, venit secus eum et videns eum misericordia motus est,
He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him.34 et appropiansalligavit vulnera eius infundens oleum et vinum; et imponens illum in iumentumsuum duxit in stabulum et curam eius egit.
The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, 'Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.'35 Et altera die protulit duosdenarios et dedit stabulario et ait: “Curam illius habe, et, quodcumquesupererogaveris, ego, cum rediero, reddam tibi”.
Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?"36 Quis horum trium videturtibi proximus fuisse illi, qui incidit in latrones? ”.
He answered, "The one who treated him with mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."37 At ille dixit: “Qui fecit misericordiam in illum ”. Et ait illi Iesus: “ Vade et tu facsimiliter ”.
As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.38 Cum autem irent, ipse intravit in quoddam castellum, et mulier quaedam Marthanomine excepit illum.
She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.39 Et huic erat soror nomine Maria, quae etiam sedenssecus pedes Domini audiebat verbum illius.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me."40 Martha autem satagebat circafrequens ministerium; quae stetit et ait: “ Domine, non est tibi curae quodsoror mea reliquit me solam ministrare? Dic ergo illi, ut me adiuvet ”.
The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.41 Etrespondens dixit illi Dominus: “ Martha, Martha, sollicita es et turbaris ergaplurima,
There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."42 porro unum est necessarium; Maria enim optimam partem elegit, quaenon auferetur ab ea ”.
