NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
After this the Lord appointed seventy (-two) others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.1 And after these things the Lord appointed also other seventy-two: and he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come.
He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.2 And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest.
Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.3 Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.'5 Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.
If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.7 And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,8 And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.
cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say to them: The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,10 But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, going forth into the streets thereof, say:
'The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.11 Even the very dust of your city that cleaveth to us, we wipe off against you. Yet know this, that the kingdom of God is at hand.
I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town.12 I say to you, it shall be more tolerable at that day for Sodom, than for that city.
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.13 Woe to thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida. For if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the mighty works that have been wrought in you, they would have done penance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgement, than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum, 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.'"15 And thou, Capharnaum, which art exalted unto heaven, thou shalt be thrust down to hell.
Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."16 He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.
The seventy (-two) returned rejoicing, and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name."17 And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying: Lord, the devils also are subject to us in thy name.
Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.18 And he said to them: I saw Satan like lightening falling from heaven.
Behold, I have given you the power 'to tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.19 Behold, I have given you power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall hurt you.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven."20 But yet rejoice not in this, that spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice in this, that your names are written in heaven.
At that very moment he rejoiced (in) the holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.21 In that same hour, he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost, and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father, for so it hath seemed good in thy sight.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."22 All things are delivered to me by my Father; and no one knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and to whom the Son will reveal him.
Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.23 And turning to his disciples, he said: Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see.
For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."24 For I say to you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them.
There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"25 And behold a certain lawyer stood up, tempting him, and saying, Master, what must I do to possess eternal life?
Jesus said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read it?"26 But he said to him: What is written in the law? how readest thou?
He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."27 He answering, said: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind: and thy neighbour as thyself.
He replied to him, "You have answered correctly; do this and you will live."28 And he said to him: Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"29 But he willing to justify himself, said to Jesus: And who is my neighbour?
Jesus replied, "A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.30 And Jesus answering, said: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, who also stripped him, and having wounded him went away, leaving him half dead.
A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.31 And it chanced, that a certain priest went down the same way: and seeing him, passed by.
Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.32 In like manner also a Levite, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by.
But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.33 But a certain Samaritan being on his journey, came near him; and seeing him, was moved with compassion.
He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him.34 And going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, 'Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.'35 And the next day he took out two pence, and gave to the host, and said: Take care of him; and whatsoever thou shalt spend over and above, I, at my return, will repay thee.
Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?"36 Which of these three, in thy opinion, was neighbour to him that fell among the robbers?
He answered, "The one who treated him with mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."37 But he said: He that shewed mercy to him. And Jesus said to him: Go, and do thou in like manner.
As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.38 Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house.
She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sitting also at the Lord's feet, heard his word.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me."40 But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? speak to her therefore, that she help me.
The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.41 And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things:
There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."42 But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.
