When Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples,1 Ye know that after two days the passover takes place, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.
"You know that in two days' time it will be Passover, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."2 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas,
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,3 and took counsel together in order that they might seize Jesus by subtlety and kill him;
and they consulted together to arrest Jesus by treachery and put him to death.4 but they said, Not in the feast, that there be not a tumult among the people.
But they said, "Not during the festival, that there may not be a riot among the people."5 a woman, having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, came to him and poured it out upon his head as he lay at table.
Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,6 But the disciples seeing it became indignant, saying, To what end {was} this waste?
a woman came up to him with an alabaster jar of costly perfumed oil, and poured it on his head while he was reclining at table.7 for this might have been sold for much and been given to the poor.
When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and said, "Why this waste?8 But Jesus knowing {it} said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? for she has wrought a good work toward me.
It could have been sold for much, and the money given to the poor."9 For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always.
Since Jesus knew this, he said to them, "Why do you make trouble for the woman? She has done a good thing for me.10 For in pouring out this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burying.
The poor you will always have with you; but you will not always have me.11 Verily I say to you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, that also which this {woman} has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
In pouring this perfumed oil upon my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.12 and said, What are ye willing to give me, and *I* will deliver him up to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver.
Amen, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be spoken of, in memory of her."13 And from that time he sought a good opportunity that he might deliver him up.
Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscar iot, went to the chief priests14 And he said, Go into the city unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near, I will keep the passover in thy house with my disciples.
and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver,15 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.
and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.16 And when the evening was come he lay down at table with the twelve.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"17 And as they were eating he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.
He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The teacher says, "My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."'"18 And being exceedingly grieved they began to say to him, each of them, Is it *I*, Lord?
The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.19 But he answering said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, *he* it is who shall deliver me up.
When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve.20 The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born.
And while they were eating, he said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."21 And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it *I*, Rabbi? He says to him, *Thou* hast said.
Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, "Surely it is not I, Lord?"22 And having taken {the} cup and given thanks, he gave {it} to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.
He said in reply, "He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me.23 For this is my blood, that of the {new} covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins.
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born."24 But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.
Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" He answered, "You have said so."25 Depois do canto dos Salmos, dirigiram-se eles para o monte das Oliveiras.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, "Take and eat; this is my body."26 Disse-lhes então Jesus: Esta noite serei para todos vós uma ocasião de queda; porque está escrito: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho serão dispersadas {Zc 13,7}.
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you,27 Mas, depois da minha Ressurreição, eu vos precederei na Galiléia.
for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.28 Pedro interveio: Mesmo que sejas para todos uma ocasião de queda, para mim jamais o serás.
I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father."29 Disse-lhe Jesus: Em verdade te digo: nesta noite mesma, antes que o galo cante, três vezes me negarás.
Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.30 Respondeu-lhe Pedro: Mesmo que seja necessário morrer contigo, jamais te negarei! E todos os outros discípulos diziam-lhe o mesmo.
Then Jesus said to them, "This night all of you will have your faith in me shaken, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be dispersed';31 Retirou-se Jesus com eles para um lugar chamado Getsêmani e disse-lhes: Assentai-vos aqui, enquanto eu vou ali orar.
but after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee."32 E, tomando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e a angustiar-se.
Peter said to him in reply, "Though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be."33 Disse-lhes, então: Minha alma está triste até a morte. Ficai aqui e vigiai comigo.
Jesus said to him, "Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."34 Adiantou-se um pouco e, prostrando-se com a face por terra, assim rezou: Meu Pai, se é possível, afasta de mim este cálice! Todavia não se faça o que eu quero, mas sim o que tu queres.
Peter said to him, "Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you." And all the disciples spoke likewise.35 Foi ter então com os discípulos e os encontrou dormindo. E disse a Pedro: Então não pudestes vigiar uma hora comigo...
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."36 Vigiai e orai para que não entreis em tentação.
Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me."38 Voltou ainda e os encontrou novamente dormindo, porque seus olhos estavam pesados.
He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will."39 Deixou-os e foi orar pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.
When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?40 Voltou então para os seus discípulos e disse-lhes: Dormi agora e repousai! Chegou a hora: o Filho do Homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores...
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."41 Levantai-vos, vamos! Aquele que me trai está perto daqui.
Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, "My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!"42 Jesus ainda falava, quando veio Judas, um dos Doze, e com ele uma multidão de gente armada de espadas e cacetes, enviada pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos anciãos do povo.
Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open.43 O traidor combinara com eles este sinal: Aquele que eu beijar, é ele. Prendei-o!
He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again.44 Aproximou-se imediatamente de Jesus e disse: Salve, Mestre. E beijou-o.
Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.45 Disse-lhe Jesus: É, então, para isso que vens aqui? Em seguida, adiantaram-se eles e lançaram mão em Jesus para prendê-lo.
Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand."46 Mas um dos companheiros de Jesus desembainhou a espada e feriu um servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha.
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people.47 Jesus, no entanto, lhe disse: Embainha tua espada, porque todos aqueles que usarem da espada, pela espada morrerão.
His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, "The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him."48 Crês tu que não posso invocar meu Pai e ele não me enviaria imediatamente mais de doze legiões de anjos?
Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and he kissed him.49 Mas como se cumpririam então as Escrituras, segundo as quais é preciso que seja assim?
Jesus answered him, "Friend, do what you have come for."
And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.51 Mas tudo isto aconteceu porque era necessário que se cumprissem os oráculos dos profetas. Então os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.
Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.52 Os que haviam prendido Jesus levaram-no à casa do sumo sacerdote Caifás, onde estavam reunidos os escribas e os anciãos do povo.
Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels?53 Pedro seguia-o de longe, até o pátio do sumo sacerdote. Entrou e sentou-se junto aos criados para ver como terminaria aquilo.
But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?"54 Enquanto isso, os príncipes dos sacerdotes e todo o conselho procuravam um falso testemunho contra Jesus, a fim de o levarem à morte.
At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me.55 Mas não o conseguiram, embora se apresentassem muitas falsas testemunhas.
But all this has come to pass that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him and fled.56 Por fim, apresentaram-se duas testemunhas, que disseram: Este homem disse: Posso destruir o templo de Deus e reedificá-lo em três dias.
Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.57 Levantou-se o sumo sacerdote e lhe perguntou: Nada tens a responder ao que essa gente depõe contra ti?
Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome.58 Jesus, no entanto, permanecia calado. Disse-lhe o sumo sacerdote: Por Deus vivo, conjuro-te que nos digas se és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus?
The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death,59 Jesus respondeu: Sim. Além disso, eu vos declaro que vereis doravante o Filho do Homem sentar-se à direita do Todo-poderoso, e voltar sobre as nuvens do céu.
but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward60 A estas palavras, o sumo sacerdote rasgou suas vestes, exclamando: Que necessidade temos ainda de testemunhas? Acabastes de ouvir a blasfêmia!
who stated, "This man said, 'I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.'"61 Qual o vosso parecer? Eles responderam: Merece a morte!
The high priest rose and addressed him, "Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?"62 Cuspiram-lhe então na face, bateram-lhe com os punhos e deram-lhe tapas,
But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, "I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God."63 dizendo: Adivinha, ó Cristo: quem te bateu?
Jesus said to him in reply, "You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see 'the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power' and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'"64 Enquanto isso, Pedro estava sentado no pátio. Aproximou-se dele uma das servas, dizendo: Também tu estavas com Jesus, o Galileu.
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy;65 Mas ele negou publicamente, nestes termos: Não sei o que dizes.
what is your opinion?" They said in reply, "He deserves to die!"66 Dirigia-se ele para a porta, a fim de sair, quando outra criada o viu e disse aos que lá estavam: Este homem também estava com Jesus de Nazaré.
Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him,67 Pedro, pela segunda vez, negou com juramento: Eu nem conheço tal homem.
saying, "Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck you?"68 Pouco depois, os que ali estavam aproximaram-se de Pedro e disseram: Sim, tu és daqueles; teu modo de falar te dá a conhecer.
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. One of the maids came over to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."69 Pedro então começou a fazer imprecações, jurando que nem sequer conhecia tal homem. E, neste momento, cantou o galo.
But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about!"70 Pedro recordou-se do que Jesus lhe dissera: Antes que o galo cante, negar-me-ás três vezes. E saindo, chorou amargamente.
As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazorean."
Again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man!"
A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; even your speech gives you away."
At that he began to curse and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately a cock crowed.
Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: "Before the cock crows you will deny me three times." He went out and began to weep bitterly.
