NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
King Nebuchadnezzar had a golden statue made, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, which he set up in the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.1 ετους οκτωκαιδεκατου ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλευς διοικων πολεις και χωρας και παντας τους κατοικουντας επι της γης απο ινδικης εως αιθιοπιας εποιησεν εικονα χρυσην το υψος αυτης πηχων εξηκοντα και το πλατος αυτης πηχων εξ και εστησεν αυτην εν πεδιω του περιβολου χωρας βαβυλωνιας
He then ordered the satraps, prefects, and governors, the counselors, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the officials of the provinces to be summoned to the dedication of the statue which he had set up.2 και ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλευς βασιλεων και κυριευων της οικουμενης ολης απεστειλεν επισυναγαγειν παντα τα εθνη και φυλας και γλωσσας σατραπας στρατηγους τοπαρχας και υπατους διοικητας και τους επ' εξουσιων κατα χωραν και παντας τους κατα την οικουμενην ελθειν εις τον εγκαινισμον της εικονος της χρυσης ην εστησε ναβουχοδονοσορ ο βασιλευς
The satraps, prefects, and governors, the counselors, treasurers, judges, and magistrates and all the officials of the provinces, all these came together for the dedication and stood before the statue which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.3 και εστησαν οι προγεγραμμενοι κατεναντι της εικονος
A herald cried out: "Nations and peoples of every language, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments,4 και ο κηρυξ εκηρυξε τοις οχλοις υμιν παραγγελλεται εθνη και χωραι λαοι και γλωσσαι
you are ordered to fall down and worship the golden statue which King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.5 οταν ακουσητε της φωνης της σαλπιγγος συριγγος και κιθαρας σαμβυκης και ψαλτηριου συμφωνιας και παντος γενους μουσικων πεσοντες προσκυνησατε τη εικονι τη χρυση ην εστησε ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλευς
Whoever does not fall down and worship shall be instantly cast into a white-hot furnace."6 και πας ος αν μη πεσων προσκυνηση εμβαλουσιν αυτον εις την καμινον του πυρος την καιομενην
Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments, the nations and peoples of every language all fell down and worshiped the golden statue which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.7 και εν τω καιρω εκεινω οτε ηκουσαν παντα τα εθνη της φωνης της σαλπιγγος και παντος ηχου μουσικων πιπτοντα παντα τα εθνη φυλαι και γλωσσαι προσεκυνησαν τη εικονι τη χρυση ην εστησε ναβουχοδονοσορ κατεναντι τουτου
At that point, some of the Chaldeans came and accused the Jews8 εν εκεινω τω καιρω προσελθοντες ανδρες χαλδαιοι διεβαλον τους ιουδαιους
to King Nebuchadnezzar: "O king, live forever!9 και υπολαβοντες ειπον κυριε βασιλευ εις τον αιωνα ζηθι
O king, you issued a decree that everyone who heard the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments should fall down and worship the golden statue;10 συ βασιλευ προσεταξας και εκρινας ινα πας ανθρωπος ος αν ακουση της φωνης της σαλπιγγος και παντος ηχου μουσικων πεσων προσκυνηση τη εικονι τη χρυση
whoever did not was to be cast into a white-hot furnace.11 και ος αν μη πεσων προσκυνηση εμβληθησεται εις την καμινον του πυρος την καιομενην
There are certain Jews whom you have made administrators of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego; these men, O king, have paid no attention to you; they will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up."12 εισι δε τινες ανδρες ιουδαιοι ους κατεστησας επι της χωρας της βαβυλωνιας σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω οι ανθρωποι εκεινοι ουκ εφοβηθησαν σου την εντολην και τω ειδωλω σου ουκ ελατρευσαν και τη εικονι σου τη χρυση η εστησας ου προσεκυνησαν
Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and sent for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were promptly brought before the king.13 τοτε ναβουχοδονοσορ θυμωθεις οργη προσεταξεν αγαγειν τον σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω τοτε οι ανθρωποι ηχθησαν προς τον βασιλεα
King Nebuchadnezzar questioned them: "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you will not serve my god, or worship the golden statue that I set up?14 ους και συνιδων ναβουχοδονοσορ ο βασιλευς ειπεν αυτοις δια τι σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω τοις θεοις μου ου λατρευετε και τη εικονι τη χρυση ην εστησα ου προσκυνειτε
Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments; otherwise, you shall be instantly cast into the white-hot furnace; and who is the God that can deliver you out of my hands?"15 και νυν ει μεν εχετε ετοιμως αμα τω ακουσαι της σαλπιγγος και παντος ηχου μουσικων πεσοντες προσκυνησαι τη εικονι τη χρυση η εστησα ει δε μη γε γινωσκετε οτι μη προσκυνησαντων υμων αυθωρι εμβληθησεσθε εις την καμινον του πυρος την καιομενην και ποιος θεος εξελειται υμας εκ των χειρων μου
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, "There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you in this matter.16 αποκριθεντες δε σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω ειπαν τω βασιλει ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλευ ου χρειαν εχομεν ημεις επι τη επιταγη ταυτη αποκριθηναι σοι
If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us!17 εστι γαρ θεος εν ουρανοις εις κυριος ημων ον φοβουμεθα ος εστι δυνατος εξελεσθαι ημας εκ της καμινου του πυρος και εκ των χειρων σου βασιλευ εξελειται ημας
But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up."18 και τοτε φανερον σοι εσται οτι ουτε τω ειδωλω σου λατρευομεν ουτε τη εικονι σου τη χρυση ην εστησας προσκυνουμεν
Nebuchadnezzar's face became livid with utter rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace to be heated seven times more than usual19 τοτε ναβουχοδονοσορ επλησθη θυμου και η μορφη του προσωπου αυτου ηλλοιωθη και επεταξε καηναι την καμινον επταπλασιως παρ' ο εδει αυτην καηναι
and had some of the strongest men in his army bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and cast them into the white-hot furnace.20 και ανδρας ισχυροτατους των εν τη δυναμει επεταξε συμποδισαντας τον σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω εμβαλειν εις την καμινον του πυρος την καιομενην
They were bound and cast into the white-hot furnace with their coats, hats, shoes and other garments,21 τοτε οι ανδρες εκεινοι συνεποδισθησαν εχοντες τα υποδηματα αυτων και τας τιαρας αυτων επι των κεφαλων αυτων συν τω ιματισμω αυτων και εβληθησαν εις την καμινον
for the king's order was urgent. So huge a fire was kindled in the furnace that the flames devoured the men who threw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego into it.22 επειδη το προσταγμα του βασιλεως ηπειγεν και η καμινος εξεκαυθη υπερ το προτερον επταπλασιως και οι ανδρες οι προχειρισθεντες συμποδισαντες αυτους και προσαγαγοντες τη καμινω ενεβαλοσαν εις αυτην
But these three fell, bound, into the midst of the white-hot furnace.23 τους μεν ουν ανδρας τους συμποδισαντας τους περι τον αζαριαν εξελθουσα η φλοξ εκ της καμινου ενεπυρισε και απεκτεινεν αυτοι δε συνετηρηθησαν
They walked about in the flames, singing to God and blessing the Lord.24 και εγενετο εν τω ακουσαι τον βασιλεα υμνουντων αυτων και εστως εθεωρει αυτους ζωντας τοτε ναβουχοδονοσορ ο βασιλευς εθαυμασε και ανεστη σπευσας και ειπεν τοις φιλοις αυτου
In the fire Azariah stood up and prayed aloud:25 ιδου εγω ορω ανδρας τεσσαρας λελυμενους περιπατουντας εν τω πυρι και φθορα ουδεμια εγενηθη εν αυτοις και η ορασις του τεταρτου ομοιωμα αγγελου θεου
"Blessed are you, and praiseworthy, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and glorious forever is your name.26 και προσελθων ο βασιλευς προς την θυραν της καμινου της καιομενης τω πυρι εκαλεσεν αυτους εξ ονοματος σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω οι παιδες του θεου των θεων του υψιστου εξελθετε εκ του πυρος ουτως ουν εξηλθον οι ανδρες εκ μεσου του πυρος
For you are just in all you have done; all your deeds are faultless, all your ways right, and all your judgments proper.27 και συνηχθησαν οι υπατοι τοπαρχαι και αρχιπατριωται και οι φιλοι του βασιλεως και εθεωρουν τους ανθρωπους εκεινους οτι ουχ ηψατο το πυρ του σωματος αυτων και αι τριχες αυτων ου κατεκαησαν και τα σαραβαρα αυτων ουκ ηλλοιωθησαν ουδε οσμη του πυρος ην εν αυτοις
You have executed proper judgments in all that you have brought upon us and upon Jerusalem, the holy city of our fathers. By a proper judgment you have done all this because of our sins;28 υπολαβων δε ναβουχοδονοσορ ο βασιλευς ειπεν ευλογητος κυριος ο θεος του σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω ος απεστειλε τον αγγελον αυτου και εσωσε τους παιδας αυτου τους ελπισαντας επ' αυτον την γαρ προσταγην του βασιλεως ηθετησαν και παρεδωκαν τα σωματα αυτων εις εμπυρισμον ινα μη λατρευσωσι μηδε προσκυνησωσι θεω ετερω αλλ' η τω θεω αυτων
For we have sinned and transgressed by departing from you, and we have done every kind of evil.29 και νυν εγω κρινω ινα παν εθνος και πασαι φυλαι και πασαι γλωσσαι ος αν βλασφημηση εις τον κυριον τον θεον σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω διαμελισθησεται και η οικια αυτου δημευθησεται διοτι ουκ εστιν θεος ετερος ος δυνησεται εξελεσθαι ουτως
Your commandments we have not heeded or observed, nor have we done as you ordered us for our good.30 ουτως ουν ο βασιλευς τω σεδραχ μισαχ αβδεναγω εξουσιαν δους εφ' ολης της χωρας κατεστησεν αυτους αρχοντας
Therefore all you have brought upon us, all you have done to us,you have done by a proper judgment.
You have handed us over to our enemies, lawless and hateful rebels; to an unjust king, the worst in all the world.
Now we cannot open our mouths; we, your servants, who revere you, have become a shame and a reproach.
For your name's sake, do not deliver us up forever, or make void your covenant.
Do not take away your mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham, your beloved, Isaac your servant, and Israel your holy one,
To whom you promised to multiply their offspring like the stars of heaven, or the sand on the shore of the sea.
For we are reduced, O Lord, beyond any other nation, brought low everywhere in the world this day because of our sins.
We have in our day no prince, prophet, or leader, no holocaust, sacrifice, oblation, or incense, no place to offer first fruits, to find favor with you.
But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received;
As though it were holocausts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, So let our sacrifice be in your presence today as we follow you unreservedly; for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame.
And now we follow you with our whole heart, we fear you and we pray to you.
Do not let us be put to shame, but deal with us in your kindness and great mercy.
Deliver us by your wonders, and bring glory to your name, O Lord:
Let all those be routed who inflict evils on your servants; Let them be shamed and powerless, and their strength broken;
Let them know that you alone are the Lord God, glorious over the whole world."
Now the king's men who had thrown them in continued to stoke the furnace with brimstone, pitch, tow, and faggots.
The flames rose forty-nine cubits above the furnace,
and spread out, burning the Chaldeans nearby.
But the angel of the Lord went down into the furnace with Azariah and his companions, drove the fiery flames out of the furnace,
and made the inside of the furnace as though a dew-laden breeze were blowing through it. The fire in no way touched them or caused them pain or harm.
Then these three in the furnace with one voice sang, glorifying and blessing God:
"Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever; And blessed is your holy and glorious name, praiseworthy and exalted above all for all ages.
Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory, praiseworthy and glorious above all forever.
Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.
Blessed are you who look into the depths from your throne upon the cherubim, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.
Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven, praiseworthy and glorious forever.
Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.
Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.
You heavens, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.
All you waters above the heavens, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.
All you hosts of the Lord, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Sun and moon, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Stars of heaven, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Every shower and dew, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
All you winds, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Fire and heat, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
[Cold and chill, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Dew and rain, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Frost and chill, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Ice and snow, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Nights and days, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Light and darkness, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Lightnings and clouds, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Let the earth bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.
Mountains and hills, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Everything growing from the earth, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
You springs, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Seas and rivers, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
You dolphins and all water creatures, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
All you birds of the air, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
All you beasts, wild and tame, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
You sons of men, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
O Israel, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Priests of the Lord, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Servants of the Lord, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Spirits and souls of the just, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Holy men of humble heart, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever.
Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever. For he has delivered us from the nether world, and saved us from the power of death; He has freed us from the raging flame and delivered us from the fire.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.
Bless the God of gods, all you who fear the Lord; praise him and give him thanks, because his mercy endures forever." Hearing them sing, and astonished at seeing them alive,
King Nebuchadnezzar rose in haste and asked his nobles, "Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?" "Assuredly, O king," they answered.
"But," he replied, "I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God."
Then Nebuchadnezzar came to the opening of the white-hot furnace and called to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: "Servants of the most high God, come out." Thereupon Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire.
When the satraps, prefects, governors, and nobles of the king came together, they saw that the fire had had no power over the bodies of these men; not a hair of their heads had been singed, nor were their garments altered; there was not even a smell of fire about them.
Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel to deliver the servants that trusted in him; they disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
Therefore I decree for nations and peoples of every language that whoever blasphemes the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be cut to pieces and his house destroyed. For there is no other God who can rescue like this."
Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.
King Nebuchadnezzar to the nations and peoples of every language, wherever they dwell on earth: abundant peace!
It has seemed good to me to publish the signs and wonders which the most high God has accomplished in my regard.
How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders; his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures through all generations.
