1 King Nebuchadnezzar had a golden statue made, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, which he set up in the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.1 Il re Nabucodònosor aveva fatto costruire una statua d’oro, alta sessanta cubiti e larga sei, e l’aveva fatta erigere nella pianura di Dura, nella provincia di Babilonia.
2 He then ordered the satraps, prefects, and governors, the counselors, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the officials of the provinces to be summoned to the dedication of the statue which he had set up.2 Quindi il re Nabucodònosor aveva convocato i sàtrapi, i governatori, i prefetti, i consiglieri, i tesorieri, i giudici, i questori e tutte le alte autorità delle province, perché presenziassero all’inaugurazione della statua che il re Nabucodònosor aveva fatto erigere.
3 The satraps, prefects, and governors, the counselors, treasurers, judges, and magistrates and all the officials of the provinces, all these came together for the dedication and stood before the statue which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.3 I sàtrapi, i governatori, i prefetti, i consiglieri, i tesorieri, i giudici, i questori e tutte le alte autorità delle province vennero all’inaugurazione della statua che aveva fatto erigere il re Nabucodònosor. Essi si disposero davanti alla statua fatta erigere da Nabucodònosor.
4 A herald cried out: "Nations and peoples of every language, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments,4 Un banditore gridò ad alta voce: «Popoli, nazioni e lingue, a voi è rivolto questo proclama:
5 you are ordered to fall down and worship the golden statue which King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.5 Quando voi udrete il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, dell’arpa, del salterio, della zampogna e di ogni specie di strumenti musicali, vi prostrerete e adorerete la statua d’oro che il re Nabucodònosor ha fatto erigere.
6 Whoever does not fall down and worship shall be instantly cast into a white-hot furnace."6 Chiunque non si prostrerà e non adorerà, in quel medesimo istante sarà gettato in mezzo a una fornace di fuoco ardente».
7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments, the nations and peoples of every language all fell down and worshiped the golden statue which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.7 Perciò tutti i popoli, nazioni e lingue, non appena ebbero udito il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, dell’arpa, del salterio e di ogni specie di strumenti musicali, si prostrarono e adorarono la statua d’oro che il re Nabucodònosor aveva fatto erigere.
8 At that point, some of the Chaldeans came and accused the Jews8 Però in quel momento alcuni Caldei si fecero avanti per accusare i Giudei
9 to King Nebuchadnezzar: "O king, live forever!9 e andarono a dire al re Nabucodònosor: «O re, vivi per sempre!
10 O king, you issued a decree that everyone who heard the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments should fall down and worship the golden statue;10 ]Quanto sono grandi i suoi prodigi
e quanto potenti le sue meraviglie!
Il suo regno è un regno eterno
e il suo dominio di generazione in generazione».
11 whoever did not was to be cast into a white-hot furnace.11 chiunque non si prostrerà e non l’adorerà, sia gettato in mezzo a una fornace di fuoco ardente.
12 There are certain Jews whom you have made administrators of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego; these men, O king, have paid no attention to you; they will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up."12 Ora, ci sono alcuni Giudei, che hai fatto amministratori della provincia di Babilonia, cioè Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, che non ti obbediscono, o re: non servono i tuoi dèi e non adorano la statua d’oro che tu hai fatto erigere».
13 Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and sent for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were promptly brought before the king.13 Allora Nabucodònosor, sdegnato e adirato, comandò che gli si conducessero Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, e questi comparvero alla presenza del re.
14 King Nebuchadnezzar questioned them: "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you will not serve my god, or worship the golden statue that I set up?14 Nabucodònosor disse loro: «È vero, Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, che voi non servite i miei dèi e non adorate la statua d’oro che io ho fatto erigere?
15 Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments; otherwise, you shall be instantly cast into the white-hot furnace; and who is the God that can deliver you out of my hands?"15 Ora se voi, quando udrete il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, dell’arpa, del salterio, della zampogna e di ogni specie di strumenti musicali, sarete pronti a prostrarvi e adorare la statua che io ho fatto, bene; altrimenti, in quel medesimo istante, sarete gettati in mezzo a una fornace di fuoco ardente. Quale dio vi potrà liberare dalla mia mano?».
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, "There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you in this matter.16 Ma Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego risposero al re Nabucodònosor: «Noi non abbiamo bisogno di darti alcuna risposta in proposito;
17 If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us!17 sappi però che il nostro Dio, che serviamo, può liberarci dalla fornace di fuoco ardente e dalla tua mano, o re.
18 But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up."18 Ma anche se non ci liberasse, sappi, o re, che noi non serviremo mai i tuoi dèi e non adoreremo la statua d’oro che tu hai eretto».
19 Nebuchadnezzar's face became livid with utter rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace to be heated seven times more than usual19 Allora Nabucodònosor fu pieno d’ira e il suo aspetto si alterò nei confronti di Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, e ordinò che si aumentasse il fuoco della fornace sette volte più del solito.
20 and had some of the strongest men in his army bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and cast them into the white-hot furnace.20 Poi, ad alcuni uomini fra i più forti del suo esercito, comandò di legare Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego e gettarli nella fornace di fuoco ardente.
21 They were bound and cast into the white-hot furnace with their coats, hats, shoes and other garments,21 Furono infatti legati, vestiti come erano, con i mantelli, i calzari, i copricapi e tutti i loro abiti, e gettati in mezzo alla fornace di fuoco ardente.
22 for the king's order was urgent. So huge a fire was kindled in the furnace that the flames devoured the men who threw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego into it.22 Poiché l’ordine del re urgeva e la fornace era ben accesa, la fiamma del fuoco uccise coloro che vi avevano gettato Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego.
23 But these three fell, bound, into the midst of the white-hot furnace.23 E questi tre, Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, caddero legati nella fornace di fuoco ardente.
24 They walked about in the flames, singing to God and blessing the Lord.24 Essi passeggiavano in mezzo alle fiamme, lodavano Dio e benedicevano il Signore.
25 In the fire Azariah stood up and prayed aloud:25 Azaria si alzò e fece questa preghiera in mezzo al fuoco e aprendo la bocca disse:
26 "Blessed are you, and praiseworthy, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and glorious forever is your name.26 «Benedetto sei tu, Signore, Dio dei nostri padri;
degno di lode e glorioso è il tuo nome per sempre.
27 For you are just in all you have done; all your deeds are faultless, all your ways right, and all your judgments proper.27 Tu sei giusto in tutto ciò che ci hai fatto;
tutte le tue opere sono vere,
rette le tue vie e giusti tutti i tuoi giudizi.
28 You have executed proper judgments in all that you have brought upon us and upon Jerusalem, the holy city of our fathers. By a proper judgment you have done all this because of our sins;28 Giusto è stato il tuo giudizio
per quanto hai fatto ricadere su di noi
e sulla città santa dei nostri padri, Gerusalemme.
Con verità e giustizia tu ci hai inflitto tutto questo
a causa dei nostri peccati,
29 For we have sinned and transgressed by departing from you, and we have done every kind of evil.29 poiché noi abbiamo peccato, abbiamo agito da iniqui,
allontanandoci da te, abbiamo mancato in ogni modo.
Non abbiamo obbedito ai tuoi comandamenti,
30 Your commandments we have not heeded or observed, nor have we done as you ordered us for our good.30 non li abbiamo osservati, non abbiamo fatto

31 Therefore all you have brought upon us, all you have done to us,you have done by a proper judgment.31 Ora, quanto hai fatto ricadere su di noi,
tutto ciò che ci hai fatto,
l’hai fatto con retto giudizio:
32 You have handed us over to our enemies, lawless and hateful rebels; to an unjust king, the worst in all the world.32 ci hai dato in potere dei nostri nemici,
ingiusti, i peggiori fra gli empi,
e di un re iniquo, il più malvagio su tutta la terra.
33 Now we cannot open our mouths; we, your servants, who revere you, have become a shame and a reproach.33 Ora non osiamo aprire la bocca:
disonore e disprezzo sono toccati a quelli che ti servono,
a quelli che ti adorano.
34 For your name's sake, do not deliver us up forever, or make void your covenant.34 Non ci abbandonare fino in fondo,

35 Do not take away your mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham, your beloved, Isaac your servant, and Israel your holy one,35 non ritirare da noi la tua misericordia,

36 To whom you promised to multiply their offspring like the stars of heaven, or the sand on the shore of the sea.36 ai quali hai parlato, promettendo di moltiplicare

37 For we are reduced, O Lord, beyond any other nation, brought low everywhere in the world this day because of our sins.37 Ora invece, Signore,

oggi siamo umiliati per tutta la terra

38 We have in our day no prince, prophet, or leader, no holocaust, sacrifice, oblation, or incense, no place to offer first fruits, to find favor with you.38 Ora non abbiamo più né principe

né sacrificio né oblazione né incenso
né luogo per presentarti le primizie
e trovare misericordia.
39 But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us be received;39 Potessimo essere accolti con il cuore contrito

40 As though it were holocausts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, So let our sacrifice be in your presence today as we follow you unreservedly; for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame.40 Tale sia oggi il nostro sacrificio davanti a te e ti sia gradito,
perché non c’è delusione per coloro che confidano in te.
41 And now we follow you with our whole heart, we fear you and we pray to you.41 Ora ti seguiamo con tutto il cuore,
ti temiamo e cerchiamo il tuo volto,
non coprirci di vergogna.
42 Do not let us be put to shame, but deal with us in your kindness and great mercy.42 Fa’ con noi secondo la tua clemenza,
secondo la tua grande misericordia.
43 Deliver us by your wonders, and bring glory to your name, O Lord:43 Salvaci con i tuoi prodigi,
da’ gloria al tuo nome, Signore.
44 Let all those be routed who inflict evils on your servants; Let them be shamed and powerless, and their strength broken;44 Siano invece confusi quanti mostrano il male ai tuoi servi,
siano coperti di vergogna,
privati della loro potenza e del loro dominio,
e sia infranta la loro forza!
45 Let them know that you alone are the Lord God, glorious over the whole world."45 Sappiano che tu sei il Signore,
il Dio unico e glorioso su tutta la terra».
46 Now the king's men who had thrown them in continued to stoke the furnace with brimstone, pitch, tow, and faggots.46 I servi del re, che li avevano gettati dentro, non cessarono di aumentare il fuoco nella fornace, con bitume, stoppa, pece e sarmenti.
47 The flames rose forty-nine cubits above the furnace,47 La fiamma si alzava quarantanove cubiti sopra la fornace
48 and spread out, burning the Chaldeans nearby.48 e uscendo bruciò quei Caldei che si trovavano vicino alla fornace.
49 But the angel of the Lord went down into the furnace with Azariah and his companions, drove the fiery flames out of the furnace,49 Ma l’angelo del Signore, che era sceso con Azaria e con i suoi compagni nella fornace, allontanò da loro la fiamma del fuoco della fornace
50 and made the inside of the furnace as though a dew-laden breeze were blowing through it. The fire in no way touched them or caused them pain or harm.50 e rese l’interno della fornace come se vi soffiasse dentro un vento pieno di rugiada. 51 Then these three in the furnace with one voice sang, glorifying and blessing God:51 Allora quei tre giovani, a una sola voce, si misero a lodare, a glorificare, a benedire Dio nella fornace dicendo:
52 "Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever; And blessed is your holy and glorious name, praiseworthy and exalted above all for all ages.52 «Benedetto sei tu, Signore, Dio dei padri nostri,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
Benedetto il tuo nome glorioso e santo,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
53 Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory, praiseworthy and glorious above all forever.53 Benedetto sei tu nel tuo tempio santo, glorioso,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
54 Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.54 Benedetto sei tu sul trono del tuo regno,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
55 Blessed are you who look into the depths from your throne upon the cherubim, praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.55 Benedetto sei tu che penetri con lo sguardo gli abissi e siedi sui cherubini,
degno di lode e di gloria nei secoli.
56 Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven, praiseworthy and glorious forever.56 Benedetto sei tu nel firmamento del cielo,

57 Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.57 Benedite, opere tutte del Signore, il Signore,

58 Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.58 Benedite, angeli del Signore, il Signore,

88 Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael, bless the Lord; praise and exalt him above all forever. For he has delivered us from the nether world, and saved us from the power of death; He has freed us from the raging flame and delivered us from the fire.88 Benedite, Anania, Azaria e Misaele, il Signore,
lodatelo ed esaltatelo nei secoli,
perché ci ha liberati dagl’inferi,
e salvati dalla mano della morte,

89 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.89 Lodate il Signore, perché egli è buono,
perché il suo amore è per sempre.
90 Bless the God of gods, all you who fear the Lord; praise him and give him thanks, because his mercy endures forever." Hearing them sing, and astonished at seeing them alive,90 Benedite, voi tutti che temete il Signore, il Dio degli dèi,
lodatelo e celebratelo, perché il suo amore è per sempre».
91 King Nebuchadnezzar rose in haste and asked his nobles, "Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?" "Assuredly, O king," they answered.91 Allora il re Nabucodònosor rimase stupito e alzatosi in fretta si rivolse ai suoi ministri: «Non abbiamo noi gettato tre uomini legati in mezzo al fuoco?». «Certo, o re», risposero.
92 "But," he replied, "I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God."92 Egli soggiunse: «Ecco, io vedo quattro uomini sciolti, i quali camminano in mezzo al fuoco, senza subirne alcun danno; anzi il quarto è simile nell’aspetto a un figlio di dèi».
93 Then Nebuchadnezzar came to the opening of the white-hot furnace and called to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: "Servants of the most high God, come out." Thereupon Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire.93 Allora Nabucodònosor si accostò alla bocca della fornace di fuoco ardente e prese a dire: «Sadrac, Mesac, Abdènego, servi del Dio altissimo, uscite, venite fuori». Allora Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego uscirono dal fuoco.
94 When the satraps, prefects, governors, and nobles of the king came together, they saw that the fire had had no power over the bodies of these men; not a hair of their heads had been singed, nor were their garments altered; there was not even a smell of fire about them.94 Quindi i sàtrapi, i governatori, i prefetti e i ministri del re si radunarono e, guardando quegli uomini, videro che sopra i loro corpi il fuoco non aveva avuto nessun potere, che neppure un capello del loro capo era stato bruciato e i loro mantelli non erano stati toccati e neppure l’odore del fuoco era penetrato in essi.
95 Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel to deliver the servants that trusted in him; they disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.95 Nabucodònosor prese a dire: «Benedetto il Dio di Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, il quale ha mandato il suo angelo e ha liberato i servi che hanno confidato in lui; hanno trasgredito il comando del re e hanno esposto i loro corpi per non servire e per non adorare alcun altro dio all’infuori del loro Dio.
96 Therefore I decree for nations and peoples of every language that whoever blasphemes the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be cut to pieces and his house destroyed. For there is no other God who can rescue like this."96 Perciò io decreto che chiunque, a qualsiasi popolo, nazione o lingua appartenga, proferirà offesa contro il Dio di Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego, sia fatto a pezzi e la sua casa sia ridotta a letamaio, poiché non c’è nessun altro dio che possa liberare allo stesso modo».
97 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.97 Da allora il re diede autorità a Sadrac, Mesac e Abdènego nella provincia di Babilonia.
98 King Nebuchadnezzar to the nations and peoples of every language, wherever they dwell on earth: abundant peace!98 Il re Nabucodònosor a tutti i popoli, nazioni e lingue, che abitano in tutta la terra: «Abbondi la vostra pace!
99 It has seemed good to me to publish the signs and wonders which the most high God has accomplished in my regard.99 Mi è parso opportuno rendervi noti i prodigi e le meraviglie che il Dio altissimo ha fatto per me.
100 How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders; his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures through all generations.
