Sirach 31

1 Keeping watch over riches wastes the flesh, and the care of wealth drives away rest.	1 - Le veglie [per brama] di ricchezza coniuman le carni, e la preoccupazione di essa allontana il sonno.
2 Concern for one's livelihood banishes slumber; more than a serious illness it disturbs repose.	2 La cura vigilante toglie il dormire, e come una grave malattia allontana il sonno.
3 The rich man labors to pile up wealth, and his only rest is wanton pleasure;	3 Fatica il ricco nell'accumulare averi, e nel suo riposo si sazia de' suoi beni.
4 The poor man toils for a meager subsistence, and if ever he rests, he finds himself in want.	4 Fatica il povero per mancanza di sostentamento, e quando smette, è nella miseria.
5 The lover of gold will not be free from sin, for he who pursues wealth is led astray by it.	5 Chi ama l'oro non sarà giusto, e chi corre dietro alla corruzione, ne avrà a sazietà.
6 Many have been ensnared by gold, though destruction lay before their eyes;	6 Molti furon mandati a precipizio [a caglon] dell'oro, e nel suo splendore fu la loro rovina.
7 It is a stumbling block to those who are avid for it, a snare for every fool.	7 Legno d'inciampo è l'oro per quelli che ad esso sacrificano, guai a coloro che gli van dietro!, e ogni insensato perirà per esso.
8 Happy the rich man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain!	8 Beato il ricco ch'è trovato senza, macchia, e che dietro all'oro non è andato, nè ha sperato nel danaro e ne' tesori.
9 Who is he, that we may praise him? he, of all his kindred, has done wonders,	9 Chi è costui, e lo proclameremo beato? Perchè ha fatto meraviglie in vita sua!
10 For he has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory; He could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not,	10 Egli è stato provato con Poro e trovato integro; avrà gloria imperitura; egli poteva prevaricare e non ha prevaricato, fare il male e non l'ha fatto.
11 So that his possessions are secure, and the assembly recounts his praises.	11 Perciò son consolidati i suoi beni nel Signore, e le sue limosine racconterà tutta l'adunanza dei santi.
12 If you are dining with a great man, bring not a greedy gullet to his table, Nor cry out, "How much food there is here!"	12 Siedi a lauta mensa? non spalancarci su la tua gola per il primo.
13 Remember that gluttony is evil. No creature is greedier than the eye: therefore it weeps for any cause.	13 Non dire: « Molta è la roba che c'è sopra! ».
14 Toward what he eyes, do not put out a hand; nor reach when he does for the same dish.	14 Ricordati che triste [cosa] è l'occhio invidioso:
15 Recognize that your neighbor feels as you do, and keep in mind your own dislikes:	15 c'è nulla di più invidioso dell'occhio tra le cose create? Perciò lagrima da tutta la sua faccia! Dov'esso guarda,
16 Behave at table like a favored guest, and be not greedy, lest you be despised.	16 non stender la tua mano per primo, perchè, contaminato dall'invidia, tu non abbia ad arrossire:
17 Be the first to stop, as befits good manners; gorge not yourself, lest you give offense.	17 non far ressa durante il convito.
18 If there are many with you at table, be not the first to reach out your hand.	18 Giudica i desiderii del tuo vicino dai tuoi stessi,[e in tutto quel che fai, usa riflessione].
19 Does not a little suffice for a well-bred man? When he lies down, it is without discomfort.	19 Serviti da uomo per bene di quelle cose che ti son messe innanzi, affinchè, mangiando a crepa pancia, tu non ti renda odioso.
20 Distress and anguish and loss of sleep, and restless tossing for the glutton! Moderate eating ensures sound slumber and a clear mind next day on rising.	20 Cessa per il primo, per motivo d'educazione, e non esser insaziabile per non offendere.
21 If perforce you have eaten too much, once you have emptied your stomach, you will have relief.	21 E se siedi in mezzo a molti, non stender la mano prima di loro, nè per primo chiedi da bere.
22 Listen to me, my son, and scorn me not; later you will find my advice good. In whatever you do, be moderate, and no sickness will befall you.	22 Il poco vino è sufficiente all'uomo educato e nel dormire non ne sarai travagliato, nè sentirai malessere.
23 On a man generous with food, blessings are invoked, and this testimony to his goodness is lasting;	23 L''nsonnia, il vomito e i dolori son per l'uomo insaziabile.
24 He who is miserly with food is denounced in public, and this testimony to his stinginess is lasting.	24 Il sonno salubre è per l'uomo parco: dorme sino al mattino e l'anima sua s'allieterà con lui.
25 Let not wine-drinking be the proof of your strength, for wine has been the ruin of many.	25 E se sarai stato costretto a mangiar troppo, levati di mezzo, vomita e n'avrai sollievo, e non procaccerai al tuo corpo una malattia.
26 As the furnace probes the work of the smith, so does wine the hearts of the insolent.	26 Ascoltami, o figliuolo, e non mi disprezzare, e da ultimo troverai [ch'eran vere] le mie parole.
27 Wine is very life to man if taken in moderation. Does he really live who lacks the wine which was created for his joy?	27 in tutto quel che fai sii svelto [e diligente], e nessuna malattia t'incoglierà.
28 Joy of heart, good cheer and merriment are wine drunk freely at the proper time.	28 Chi è splendido nell'imbandire, lo lodan le labbra di molti e la testimonianza alla sua generosità è verace.
29 Headache, bitterness and disgrace is wine drunk amid anger and strife.	29 Contro chi è spilorcio a mensa, mormora la città, e la testimonianza alla sua spilorceria è verace.
30 More and more wine is a snare for the fool; it lessens his strength and multiplies his wounds.	30 Gli amanti del vino non provocare, che molti ha rovinato il vino.
31 Rebuke not your neighbor when wine is served, nor put him to shame while he is merry; Use no harsh words with him and distress him not in the presence of others.	31 Il fuoco prova l'acciaio temprato, così il vino, bevuto fino all'ubriachezza, mette a nudo i cuori dei superbi.
	32 Buona vita per gli uomini è il vino con sobrietà: se lo bevi con moderazione sarai sobrio.
	33 Qual vita fa colui che manca di vino?
	34 Cos'è che toglie la vita? La morte!
	35 Il vino fu creato per la giocondità [dell'uomo] e non per l'ubriachezza, da principio.
	36 Esultanza dell'anima e [letizia] del cuore è il vino bevuto [a tempo e] moderatamente:
	37 salute dell'anima e del corpo è il bere sobrio.
	38 Il vino bevuto con eccesso causa l'irritazione, lo sdegno e molte rovine:
	39 amarezza dell'anima è il vino bevuto con eccesso.
	40 L'eccitazione dell'ebbrezza [provoca] l'offesa dell'insensato: scema le forze e produce ferite.
	41 In un simposio di vino non rimproverare il vicino, e non lo disprezzare nella sua allegria.
	42 parole d'ingiuria non gli dire, e non l'angustiare col richiedergli [quel che ti deve].
