1 Keeping watch over riches wastes the flesh, and the care of wealth drives away rest.	1 Le vigilie dell'avarizia consuman le carni, e le sue cure levano il sonno.
2 Concern for one's livelihood banishes slumber; more than a serious illness it disturbs repose.	2 I pensieri dell'avvenire sturbano la quiete, come la grave malattia fa vegliar l'uomo.
3 The rich man labors to pile up wealth, and his only rest is wanton pleasure;	3 Faticò il ricco per adunare ricchezze, e nel suo riposo è ricolmo di beni.
4 The poor man toils for a meager subsistence, and if ever he rests, he finds himself in want.	4 Lavora il povero per bisogno di vitto, e se fa fine di lavorare diventa mendico.
5 The lover of gold will not be free from sin, for he who pursues wealth is led astray by it.	5 Chi è amante dell'oro, non sarà giusto, e chi va dietro alla corruzione, di essa sarà ripieno.
6 Many have been ensnared by gold, though destruction lay before their eyes;	6 Molti sono andati in precipizio a causa dell'oro, e la bellezza di lui fu la loro perdizione.
7 It is a stumbling block to those who are avid for it, a snare for every fool.	7 Legno d'inciampo è l'oro per quelli, che a lui fan sagrifizio: guai a quelli, che gli van dietro; ma tutti gli imprudenti periranno per esso.
8 Happy the rich man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain!	8 Beato il ricco, che è trovato senza colpa, ed il quale non va dietro all'oro né sua speranza ripone nel denaro, e nei tesori.
9 Who is he, that we may praise him? he, of all his kindred, has done wonders,	9 Chi è costui, e gli darem lode? perché egli ha fatto cose mirabili nella sua vita.
10 For he has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory; He could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not,	10 Egli fu provato per mezzo dell'oro, e trovato perfetto; ed avranne gloria eterna. Egli potea peccare, e non peccò, far del male, e nol fece:
11 So that his possessions are secure, and the assembly recounts his praises.	11 Per questo i beni di lui sono stabili nel Signore, e le sue limosine saran celebrate da tutta la congregazione de' santi.
12 If you are dining with a great man, bring not a greedy gullet to his table, Nor cry out, "How much food there is here!"	12 Se' tu assiso a splendida mensa? non essere tu ivi il primo a spalancare la gola.
13 Remember that gluttony is evil. No creature is greedier than the eye: therefore it weeps for any cause.	13 Non dire: molta è la roba, che è in tavola.
14 Toward what he eyes, do not put out a hand; nor reach when he does for the same dish.	14 Ricordati, che una mala cosa è l'occhio cattivo.
15 Recognize that your neighbor feels as you do, and keep in mind your own dislikes:	15 Non v'ha di peggio di quest'occhio tralle cose create? per questo egli in veggendo, piange con tutto il suo volto.
16 Behave at table like a favored guest, and be not greedy, lest you be despised.	16 Non essere il primo a stendere la mano, affinchè maltrattato dall'invidioso tu non abbi ad arrossire.
17 Be the first to stop, as befits good manners; gorge not yourself, lest you give offense.	17 Nel prendere le vivande non urtare cogli altri.
18 If there are many with you at table, be not the first to reach out your hand.	18 Giudica del genio del tuo prossimo dal tuo.
19 Does not a little suffice for a well-bred man? When he lies down, it is without discomfort.	19 Serviti da uomo frugale di quelle cose, che li son messe davanti, affinchè non avvenga, che col molto mangiare tu ti renda odioso.
20 Distress and anguish and loss of sleep, and restless tossing for the glutton! Moderate eating ensures sound slumber and a clear mind next day on rising.	20 Sii il primo a finire per verecondia, e non essere smoderato per non disgustare veruno.
21 If perforce you have eaten too much, once you have emptied your stomach, you will have relief.	21 E se siedi in mezzo a molti, non istender la mano prima di quelli, e non essere il primo a chiedere da bere.
22 Listen to me, my son, and scorn me not; later you will find my advice good. In whatever you do, be moderate, and no sickness will befall you.	22 Quanto poco vino è sufficiente ad un uomo bene educato! e in dormendo non ne sarai inquietato, e non ne sentirai incomodo.
23 On a man generous with food, blessings are invoked, and this testimony to his goodness is lasting;	23 Le vigilie, la colica, e i dolori sono per l'uomo intemperante.
24 He who is miserly with food is denounced in public, and this testimony to his stinginess is lasting.	24 Il sonno salubre è per l'uomo parco: egli dorme sino al mattino, e l'anima di lui sarà lieta con esso.
25 Let not wine-drinking be the proof of your strength, for wine has been the ruin of many.	25 Che se tu se' stato forzato a mangiar molto, vattene dalla conversazione, vomita, e ti troverai sollevato, e non cagionerai malattia al tuo corpo.
26 As the furnace probes the work of the smith, so does wine the hearts of the insolent.	26 Figliuolo ascoltami, e non disprezzarmi, e da ultimo conoscerai quel, che siano le mie parole.
27 Wine is very life to man if taken in moderation. Does he really live who lacks the wine which was created for his joy?	27 In tutte le operazioni tue sii diligente, e non si accosterà a te nissun malore.
28 Joy of heart, good cheer and merriment are wine drunk freely at the proper time.	28 Colui, che è liberale nel dar del pane, è benedetto dalle labbra di molti e la testimonianza, che rendesi alla bontà di lui, è sicura.
29 Headache, bitterness and disgrace is wine drunk amid anger and strife.	29 Contro di chi è spilorcio nel dar del pane mormora tutta la città, e la testimonianza renduta alla spilorceria di lui è verace.
30 More and more wine is a snare for the fool; it lessens his strength and multiplies his wounds.	30 Non provocare i bravi bevitori: perocché molti sono stati sterminati dal vino.
31 Rebuke not your neighbor when wine is served, nor put him to shame while he is merry; Use no harsh words with him and distress him not in the presence of others.	31 Il fuoco prova la durezza del ferro; così il vino bevuto fino all'ebbrezza manifesta i cuori de' superbi.
	32 Buona vita per gli uomini è il vino usato con sobrietà: sarai sobrio, se ne berai con moderazione.
	33 Qual vita è quella di chi sta senza vino?
	34 Che è quello, che ci priva della vita? la morte.
	35 Il vino da principio fa creato per giocondità, non per l'ubbriachezza.
	36 Il vino bevuto moderatamente rallegra l'anima, e il cuore.
	37 Il ber temperato è salute dell'anima, e del corpo.
	38 Il troppo vino fa le contese, e l'ira, e molte rovine.
	39 Il vino bevuto in copia è l'amarezza dell'anima.
	40 L'ubbriacchezza fa ardito lo stolta ad offendere, snerva le forze, ed è cagion di ferite.
	41 In un convito dove si beve, non riprendere il prossimo, e noi disprezzare nella sua allegria:
	42 Non dirgli parola di ingiuria, e noi pressare col chiedergli il tuo.
