1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;	1 Ho stretto un patto con i miei occhi, di non fissare lo sguardo su una vergine.
2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?	2 E invece, quale sorte mi assegna Dio di lassù e quale eredità mi riserva l’Onnipotente dall’alto?
3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?	3 Non è forse la rovina riservata all’iniquo e la sventura per chi compie il male?
4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?	4 Non vede egli la mia condotta e non conta tutti i miei passi?
5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;	5 Se ho agito con falsità e il mio piede si è affrettato verso la frode,
6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!	6 mi pesi pure sulla bilancia della giustizia e Dio riconosca la mia integrità.
7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,	7 Se il mio passo è andato fuori strada e il mio cuore ha seguìto i miei occhi, se la mia mano si è macchiata,
8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!	8 io semini e un altro ne mangi il frutto e siano sradicati i miei germogli.
9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;	9 Se il mio cuore si lasciò sedurre da una donna e sono stato in agguato alla porta del mio prossimo,
10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!	10 mia moglie macini per un estraneo e altri si corichino con lei;
11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;	11 difatti quella è un’infamia, un delitto da denunciare,
12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.	12 quello è un fuoco che divora fino alla distruzione e avrebbe consumato tutto il mio raccolto.
13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,	13 Se ho negato i diritti del mio schiavo e della schiava in lite con me,
14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?	14 che cosa farei, quando Dio si alzasse per giudicare, e che cosa risponderei, quando aprisse l’inquisitoria?
15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?	15 Chi ha fatto me nel ventre materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso a formarci nel grembo?
16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish	16 Se ho rifiutato ai poveri quanto desideravano, se ho lasciato languire gli occhi della vedova,
17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,	17 se da solo ho mangiato il mio tozzo di pane, senza che ne mangiasse anche l’orfano
18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--	18 – poiché fin dall'infanzia come un padre io l’ho allevato e, appena generato, gli ho fatto da guida –,
19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,	19 se mai ho visto un misero senza vestito o un indigente che non aveva di che coprirsi,
20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;	20 se non mi hanno benedetto i suoi fianchi, riscaldàti con la lana dei miei agnelli,
21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--	21 se contro l’orfano ho alzato la mano, perché avevo in tribunale chi mi favoriva,
22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!	22 mi si stacchi la scapola dalla spalla e si rompa al gomito il mio braccio,
23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.	23 perché mi incute timore il castigo di Dio e davanti alla sua maestà non posso resistere.
24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;	24 Se ho riposto la mia speranza nell’oro e all’oro fino ho detto: “Tu sei la mia fiducia”,
25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--	25 se ho goduto perché grandi erano i miei beni e guadagnava molto la mia mano,
26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,	26 se, vedendo il sole risplendere e la luna avanzare smagliante,
27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;	27 si è lasciato sedurre in segreto il mio cuore e con la mano alla bocca ho mandato un bacio,
28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.	28 anche questo sarebbe stato un delitto da denunciare, perché avrei rinnegato Dio, che sta in alto.
29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,	29 Ho gioito forse della disgrazia del mio nemico? Ho esultato perché lo colpiva la sventura?
30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--	30 Ho permesso alla mia lingua di peccare, augurandogli la morte con imprecazioni?
31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"	31 La gente della mia tenda esclamava: “A chi non ha dato le sue carni per saziarsi?”.
32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--	32 All’aperto non passava la notte il forestiero e al viandante aprivo le mie porte.
33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom	33 Non ho nascosto come uomo la mia colpa, tenendo celato nel mio petto il mio delitto,
34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!	34 come se temessi molto la folla e il disprezzo delle famiglie mi spaventasse, tanto da starmene zitto, senza uscire di casa.
35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!	35 Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco qui la mia firma! L’Onnipotente mi risponda! Il documento scritto dal mio avversario
36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;	36 vorrei certo portarlo sulle mie spalle e cingerlo come mio diadema!
37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.	37 Gli renderò conto di tutti i miei passi, mi presenterei a lui come un principe».
38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;	38 Se contro di me grida la mia terra e i suoi solchi piangono a una sola voce,
39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;	39 se ho mangiato il suo frutto senza pagare e ho fatto sospirare i suoi coltivatori,
40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!	40 ]Sono finite le parole di Giobbe.
