1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he again sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah, along with the right wing of his army.	1 Cependant, lorsque Démétrius eut appris que Nicanor et son armée étaient tombés dans le combat, il résolut d'envoyer de nouveau Bacchidès et Alcime en Judée, et l'aile droite avec eux.
2 They took the road to Galilee, and camping opposite the ascent at Arbela, they captured it and killed many people.	2 Ils allèrent par la route qui mène à Galgala, et campèrent à Mazalot, qui est en Arbelles; ils la prirent, et tuérent un grand nombre d'hommes.
3 In the first month of the year one hundred and fifty-two, they encamped against Jerusalem.	3 Au premier mois de la cent cinquante-deuxième année, ils firent approcher leur armée de Jérusalem;
4 Then they set out for Berea with twenty thousand men and two thousand cavalry.	4 et vingt-deux mille hommes se levèrent et allèrent à Bérée, avec deux mille cavaliers.
5 Judas, with three thousand picked men, had camped at Elasa.	5 Or Judas avait établi son camp à Laïsa, et trois mille hommes d'élite étaient avec lui.
6 When his men saw the great number of the troops, they were very much afraid, and many slipped away from the camp, until only eight hundred men remained.	6 Et ils virent la multitude de l'armée, qui était immense, et ils furent saisis de frayeur; et beaucoup se retirèrent du camp, et il ne resta d'eux que huit cents hommes.
7 As Judas saw that his army was melting away just when the battle was imminent, he was panic-stricken, because he had no time to gather them together.	7 Judas vit que son armée s'était dissipée, et que la guerre le pressait; et il eut le coeur brisé, parce qu'il n'avait pas le temps de les rassembler, et il fut découragé.
8 But in spite of his discouragement, he said to those who remained: "Let us go forward to meet our enemies; perhaps we can put up a good fight against them."	8 Et il dit à ceux qui étaient restés: Levons-nous, et marchons à nos ennemis, pour les combattre, si nous le pouvons.
9 They tried to dissuade him, saying: "We certainly cannot. Let us save our lives now, and come back with our kinsmen, and then fight against them. Now we are too few."	9 Mais ils l'en détournaient, en disant: Nous ne le pourrons pas; mais sauvons maintenant nos vies, et retournons à nos frères, et alors nous combattrons contre les ennemis; car nous sommes peu nombreux.
10 But Judas said: "Far be it from me to do such a thing as to flee from them! If our time has come, let us die bravely for our kinsmen and not leave a stain upon our glory!"	10 Et Judas dit: Dieu nous garde d'agir ainsi, et de fuir devant eux! Si notre temps est arrivé, mourons courageusement pour nos frères, et ne portons pas atteinte à notre gloire.
11 Then the army of Bacchides moved out of camp and took its position for combat. The cavalry were divided into two squadrons, and the slingers and the archers came on ahead of the army, and all the valiant men were in the front line.	11 L'armée ennemie sortit de son camp et se plaça devant eux, et les cavaliers furent divisés en deux corps: les frondeurs et les archers marchaient à la tête de l'armée, et au premier rang de la bataille étaient tous les vaillants.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two squadrons, the phalanx attacked as they blew their trumpets. Those who were on Judas' side also blew their trumpets.	12 Bacchidès était à l'aile droite; et les bataillons s'approchèrent des deux côtés, et ils sonnaient de la trompette.
13 The earth shook with the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning until evening.	13 Ceux qui étaient du côté de Judas poussèrent aussi des cris, et la terre fut ébranlée par le bruit des armées, et le combat fut engagé depuis le matin jusqu'au soir.
14 Seeing that Bacchides was on the right, with the main force of his army, Judas, with all the most stouthearted rallying to him,	14 Judas vit que la partie la plus forte de l'armée de Bacchidès était à droite, et tous les vaillants de coeur se groupèrent auprès de lui;
15 drove back the right wing and pursued them as far as the mountain slopes.	15 et l'aile droite fut écrasée par eux, et il les poursuivit jusqu'à la montagne d'Azot.
16 But when the men on the left wing saw that the right wing was driven back, they turned and followed Judas and his men, taking them in the rear.	16 Ceux qui étaient à l'aile gauche virent que l'aile droite avait été écrasée, et ils suivirent par derrière Judas et ceux qui étaient avec lui.
17 The battle was fought desperately, and many on both sides fell wounded.	17 Le combat devint très vif; et beaucoup tombèrent frappés parmi ceux-ci et parmi ceux-là.
18 Then Judas fell, and the rest fled.	18 Judas aussi tomba, et les autres s'enfuirent.
19 Jonathan and Simon took their brother Judas and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein.	19 Jonathas et Simon emportèrent Judas, leur frère, et ils l'ensevelirent dans le sépulcre de leurs pères dans la ville de Modin.
20 All Israel bewailed him in great grief. They mourned for him many days, and they said,	20 Tout le peuple d'Israël fit un grand deuil sur lui, et on le pleura pendant des jours nombreux;
21 "How the mighty one has fallen, the savior of Israel!"	21 et on disait: Comment est tombé le héros qui sauvait le peuple d'Israël?
22 The other acts of Judas, his battles, the brave deeds he performed, and his greatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Les autres récits des guerres de Judas et des actions d'éclat qu'il a faites, et de sa grandeur, n'ont pas été écrits, car ils étaient trop nombreux.
23 After the death of Judas, the transgressors of the law raised their heads in every part of Israel, and all kinds of evildoers appeared.	23 Il arriva, après la mort de Judas, que les méchants parurent sur tout le territoire d'Israël, et tous ceux qui commettaient l'iniquité se levèrent.
24 In those days there was a very great famine, and the country deserted to them.	24 En ces jours-là, il survint une très grande famine, et toute la contrée se livra à Bacchidès avec eux.
25 Bacchides chose impious men and made them masters of the country.	25 Bacchidès choisit des hommes impies, et les établit maîtres du pays;
26 These sought out and hunted down the friends of Judas and brought them to Bacchides, who punished and derided them.	26 et ils recherchaient très soigneusement les amis de Judas, et les amenaient à Bacchidès, qui se vengeait d'eux et les insultait.
27 There had not been such great distress in Israel since the time prophets ceased to appear among the people.	27 Et il y eut une grande tribulation dans Israël, telle qu'on n'en avait pas vue depuis le jour où il n'avait point paru de prophète dans Israël.
28 Then all the friends of Judas came together and said to Jonathan:	28 Alors tous les amis de Judas s'assemblèrent et dirent à Jonathas:
29 "Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to oppose our enemies, Bacchides and those who are hostile to our nation.	29 Depuis que ton frère Judas est mort, il n'y a pas d'homme semblable à lui pour marcher contre nos ennemis, Bacchidès et ceux qui sont ennemis de notre nation.
30 Now therefore we have chosen you today to be our ruler and leader in his place, and to fight our battle."	30 C'est pourquoi nous t'avons choisi aujourd'hui, pour être à sa place notre prince et notre chef, afin de diriger notre guerre.
31 From that moment Jonathan accepted the leadership, and took the place of Judas his brother.	31 Jonathas reçut en ce temps-là le commandement, et il se leva à la place de Judas son frère.
32 When Bacchides learned of it, he sought to kill him.	32 Bacchidès l'apprit, et il cherchait à le tuer.
33 But Jonathan and his brother Simon and all the men with him discovered this, and they fled to the desert of Tekoa and camped by the waters of the pool of Asphar.	33 Mais Jonathas, et Simon son frère, et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, le surent, et ils s'enfuirent dans le désert de Thécué, et s'arrêtèrent près des eaux du lac d'Asphar.
34	34 Bacchidès le sut, et le jour du sabbat il vint lui-même avec toute son armée, au delà du Jourdain.
35 Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them their great quantity of baggage.	35 Alors Jonathas envoya son frère, chef du peuple, et il demanda aux Nabuthéens, ses amis, de pouvoir laisser chez eux ses bagages, qui étaient considérables.
36 But the sons of Jambri from Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything he had.	36 Mais les fils de Jambri sortirent de Madaba, se saisirent de Jean et de tout ce qu'il avait, et s'en allèrent avec eux.
37 After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."	37 Après cela, on annonça à Jonathas et à Simon son frère que les fils de Jambri faisaient de grandes noces, et qu'ils amenaient de Madaba, en grande pompe, la fiancée, fille d'un des premiers princes de Chanaan.
38 Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid themselves under cover of the mountain.	38 Ils se souvinrent du sang de Jean, leur frère, et ils montèrent et se cachèrent dans un lieu secret de la montagne.
39 They watched, and suddenly saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines and musicians and much equipment.	39 Puis ils levèrent les yeux, et ils regardèrent; et voici du tumulte et un appareil magnifique; l'époux s'avançait au-devant d'eux avec ses amis et ses frères, au son des tambours et des instruments de musique, avec beaucoup d'armes.
40 The Jews rose up against them from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were taken.	40 Alors ils s'élancèrent sur eux de leur embuscade et les tuèrent, et beaucoup tombèrent frappés, et le reste s'enfuit sur les montagnes; et ils emportèrent toutes leurs dépouilles.
41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of music into lamentation.	41 Les noces furent donc changées en deuil, et la voix des instruments de musique en lamentation.
42 Having taken their revenge for the blood of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan.	42 Ils vengèrent ainsi le sang de leur frère, et ils revinrent sur la rive du Jourdain.
43 When Bacchides heard of it, he came on the sabbath to the banks of the Jordan with a large force.	43 Bacchidès l'apprit, et il vint le jour du sabbat sur le bord du Jourdain, avec une grande armée.
44 Then Jonathan said to his companions, "Let us get up now and fight for our lives, for today is not like yesterday and the day before.	44 Et Jonathas dit aux siens: Levons-nous et combattons contre nos ennemis, car il n'en est pas aujourd'hui comme hier et avant-hier;
45 The battle is before us, and behind us are the waters of the Jordan on one side, marsh and thickets on the other, and there is no way of escape.	45 car voici, la guerre est devant nous, et l'eau du Jourdain, et les rivages, et les marais, et le bois sont de çà et de là, et il n'y a pas moyen d'échapper.
46 Cry out now to Heaven for deliverance from our enemies."	46 Maintenant donc, criez vers le Ciel, afin que vous soyez délivrés de la main de vos ennemis. Alors la bataille s'engagea.
47 When they joined battle, Jonathan raised his arm to strike Bacchides, but Bacchides backed away from him.	47 Et Jonathas étendit la main pour frapper Bacchidès; mais celui-ci se retira en arrière;
48 Jonathan and his men jumped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, but the enemy did not pursue them across the Jordan.	48 et Jonathas et ceux qui étaient avec lui se jetèrent dans le Jourdain, et ils le passèrent à la nage devant eux.
49 A thousand men on Bacchides' side fell that day.	49 Mille hommes du côté de Bacchidès tombèrent ce jour-là, et les autres retournèrent à Jérusalem.
50 On returning to Jerusalem, Bacchides built strongholds in Judea: the Jericho fortress, as well as Emmaus, Beth-horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.	50 Ils bâtirent des villes fortes dans la Judée, et fortifièrent par de hautes murailles, des portes et des verrous, les citadelles qui étaient à Jéricho, à Ammaüs, à Béthoron, à Béthel, à Thamnatha, à Phara et à Thopo;
51 In each he put a garrison to oppose Israel.	51 puis il y mit des garnisons, pour exercer des inimitiés contre Israël.
52 He fortified the city of Beth-zur, Gazara and the citadel, and put soldiers in them and stores of provisions.	52 Il fortifia aussi la ville de Bethsura, et Gazara, et la citadelle; et il y mit des troupes et des provisions de vivres.
53 He took as hostages the sons of the leaders of the country and put them in custody in the citadel at Jerusalem.	53 Il prit pour otages les fils des princes du pays, et il les tint prisonniers dans la citadelle de Jérusalem.
54 In the year one hundred and fifty-three, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary to be torn down, thus destroying the work of the prophets. But he only began to tear it down.	54 En la cent cinquante-troisième année, au second mois, Alcime ordonna de détruire les murs de l'intérieur de la maison sainte, et de détruire les ouvrages des prophètes; et il commença à détruire.
55 Just at that time he had a stroke, and his work was interrupted; his mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer utter a word to give orders concerning his house.	55 En ce temps-là, Alcime fut frappé, et ses projets furent empêchés; sa bouche fut fermée, il fut perclus de paralysie, et il ne put plus proférer une parole, ni donner d'ordre au sujet de sa maison.
56 Finally he died in great agony.	56 Alcime mourut en ce temps-là, avec de grandes tortures.
57 Seeing that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was quiet for two years. Bacchides and Jonathan	57 Bacchidès vit qu'Alcime était mort, et il revint auprès du roi; et le pays demeura en repos pendant deux ans.
58 Then all the transgressors of the law held a council and said: "Jonathan and his companions are living in peace and security. Now then, let us have Bacchides return, and he will capture all of them in a single night."	58 Alors tous les méchants formèrent ce dessein, en disant: Voici, Jonathas et ceux qui sont avec lui vivent en paix et en assurance; faisons donc maintenant venir Bacchidès, et il les saisira tous en une seule nuit.
59 So they went and took counsel with him.	59 Ils allèrent, et ils lui donnèrent ce conseil.
60 When Bacchides was setting out with a large force, he sent letters secretly to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his companions. They were not able to do this, however, because their plot became known.	60 Et il se leva pour venir avec une grande armée, et il envoya en secret des lettres à ses alliés qui étaient en Judée, afin qu'ils se saisissent de Jonathas et de ceux qui étaient avec lui; mais ils ne le purent, parce que leur projet fut connu de ceux-ci.
61 In fact, Jonathan's men seized about fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in the mischief and put them to death.	61 Et il se saisit de cinquante des hommes du pays qui étaient les chefs du complot, et il les fit mourir.
62 Then Jonathan and Simon and their companions withdrew to Bethbasi in the desert; they rebuilt and strengthened its fortifications that had been demolished.	62 Jonathas se retira, avec Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui, à Bethbessé, qui est au désert; il en répara les ruines, et la fortifia.
63 When Bacchides learned of this, he gathered together his whole force and sent word to those who were in Judea.	63 Bacchidès le sut; et il rassembla toute son armée, et fit avertir ceux qui étaient en Judée,
64 He came and pitched his camp before Bethbasi, and constructing siege-machines, he fought against it for many days.	64 puis il vint et campa au-dessus de Bethbessé; et il l'assiégea pendant des jours nombreux, et dressa des machines.
65 Leaving his brother Simon in the city, Jonathan, accompanied by a small group of men, went out into the field.	65 Mais Jonathas laissa dans la ville Simon son frère, sortit dans la campagne, s'avança en nombre,
66 He struck down Odomera and his kinsmen and the sons of Phasiron in their encampment; these men had set out to go up to the siege with their forces.	66 et frappa Odarès, et ses frères, et les fils de Phaséron dans leurs tentes; et il commença à tailler en pièces et à croître en puissance.
67 Simon and his men then sallied forth from the city and set fire to the machines.	67 Cependant Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui sortirent de la ville, et brûlèrent les machines;
68 They fought against Bacchides, and he was beaten. This caused him great distress. Because the enterprise he had planned came to nought,	68 puis ils attaquèrent Bacchidès et il fut écrasé par eux; et ils l'affligèrent grandement, parce que son dessein et son entreprise étaient sans effet.
69 he was angry with the lawless men who had advised him to invade the province. He killed many of them and resolved to return to his own country.	69 Alors, irrité contre les hommes iniques qui lui avaient conseillé de venir dans leur pays, il en tua un grand nombre, et il résolut de s'en retourner dans son pays avec le reste de son armée.
70 Jonathan learned of this and sent ambassadors to make peace with him and to obtain the release of the prisoners.	70 Jonathas le sut, et lui envoya des ambassadeurs pour faire la paix avec lui et lui rendre les prisonniers.
71 He agreed to do as Jonathan had asked. He swore an oath to him that he would never try to injure him for the rest of his life;	71 Bacchidès les reçut favorablement, et agit d'après ses paroles, et jura qu'il ne lui ferait aucun mal tous les jours de sa vie.
72 and he released the prisoners he had previously taken from the land of Judah. He returned to his own country and never came into their territory again.	72 Il lui rendit les prisonniers qu'il avait pris auparavant dans le pays de Juda; puis il s'en retourna dans son pays, et il cessa de revenir sur ce territore.
73 Then the sword ceased in Israel. Jonathan settled in Michmash; he began to judge the people and he destroyed the impious in Israel.	73 Ainsi le glaive s'éloigna d'Israël; et Jonathas habita à Machmas, et il commença à juger le peuple; et il extermina les impies d'Israël.
