1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he again sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah, along with the right wing of his army.	1 Demetrio, avendo appreso che Nicànore era caduto in battaglia e il suo esercito distrutto, decise d'inviare di nuovo Bàcchide e Alcimo nella terra di Giuda alla testa dell'ala destra dell'esercito.
2 They took the road to Galilee, and camping opposite the ascent at Arbela, they captured it and killed many people.	2 Questi presero la strada di Gàlgala e vennero ad accamparsi a Mesalot nell'Arbela, la occuparono e fecero perire molte persone.
3 In the first month of the year one hundred and fifty-two, they encamped against Jerusalem.	3 Nel primo mese dell'anno 152 posero il campo a Gerusalemme;
4 Then they set out for Berea with twenty thousand men and two thousand cavalry.	4 poi partirono e andarono a Berea con ventimila uomini e duemila cavalieri.
5 Judas, with three thousand picked men, had camped at Elasa.	5 Giuda intanto si era accampato ad Elasa con tremila uomini scelti.
6 When his men saw the great number of the troops, they were very much afraid, and many slipped away from the camp, until only eight hundred men remained.	6 Come videro quella grande moltitudine di forze, ne ebbero grande paura e molti fuggirono dal campo, non rimanendo che ottocento uomini.
7 As Judas saw that his army was melting away just when the battle was imminent, he was panic-stricken, because he had no time to gather them together.	7 Giuda, allora, come vide che il suo esercito si era disciolto mentre la battaglia incalzava, ebbe una stretta al cuore, perché non aveva più tempo di radunarli.
8 But in spite of his discouragement, he said to those who remained: "Let us go forward to meet our enemies; perhaps we can put up a good fight against them."	8 Avvilito, disse a quelli che erano rimasti: "Leviamoci e marciamo contro i nostri avversari, se mai possiamo combattere contro di essi".
9 They tried to dissuade him, saying: "We certainly cannot. Let us save our lives now, and come back with our kinsmen, and then fight against them. Now we are too few."	9 Quelli però lo dissuadevano dicendo: "Non possiamo; ma ora salviamo piuttosto le nostre vite e poi ritorneremo con i nostri fratelli e combatteremo contro di loro. Siamo così pochi!".
10 But Judas said: "Far be it from me to do such a thing as to flee from them! If our time has come, let us die bravely for our kinsmen and not leave a stain upon our glory!"	10 Giuda replicò: "Non sia mai che io faccia una tal cosa, fuggendo davanti a costoro! Se la nostra ora è arrivata, moriamo con coraggio per i nostri fratelli e non lasciamo un motivo d'accusa per la nostra gloria".
11 Then the army of Bacchides moved out of camp and took its position for combat. The cavalry were divided into two squadrons, and the slingers and the archers came on ahead of the army, and all the valiant men were in the front line.	11 L'esercito nemico uscì dal campo e i Giudei si disposero per affrontarlo. La cavalleria era divisa in due parti; i frombolieri e gli arcieri procedevano davanti all'esercito e in prima fila stavano tutti i più forti, mentre Bàcchide era all'ala destra.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two squadrons, the phalanx attacked as they blew their trumpets. Those who were on Judas' side also blew their trumpets.	12 La falange si avvicinò dalle due parti suonando le trombe. Quelli di Giuda fecero risuonare anch'essi le trombe.
13 The earth shook with the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning until evening.	13 La terra tremò per il fragore degli eserciti e la battaglia durò dal mattino fino alla sera.
14 Seeing that Bacchides was on the right, with the main force of his army, Judas, with all the most stouthearted rallying to him,	14 Giuda vide allora che Bàcchide e il forte dell'esercito erano dalla parte destra: si radunarono, perciò, attorno a lui tutti i più coraggiosi e

19 Jonathan and Simon took their brother Judas and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein.	19 Gionata e Simone, allora, raccolsero Giuda, loro fratello, e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro dei suoi padri in Modin.

23 After the death of Judas, the transgressors of the law raised their heads in every part of Israel, and all kinds of evildoers appeared.	23 Dopo la morte di Giuda, i senza legge riapparvero su tutto il territorio d'Israele e tutti gli operatori di iniquità si risollevarono.
24 In those days there was a very great famine, and the country deserted to them.	24 In quei giorni, poi, vi fu una fame assai grande e il paese passò dalla loro parte.
25 Bacchides chose impious men and made them masters of the country.	25 Bàcchide da parte sua scelse uomini empi e li costituì signori della regione.
26 These sought out and hunted down the friends of Judas and brought them to Bacchides, who punished and derided them.	26 Questi ricercavano gli amici di Giuda e, rintracciatili, li conducevano da Bàcchide, il quale si vendicava su di essi e li scherniva.

28 Then all the friends of Judas came together and said to Jonathan:	28 Si riunirono perciò tutti gli amici di Giuda e dissero a Gionata:
29 "Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to oppose our enemies, Bacchides and those who are hostile to our nation.	29 "Da quando tuo fratello Giuda è morto, non vi è uomo simile a lui per uscire ed entrare contro i nemici e Bàcchide e contro quelli che sono ostili alla nostra gente.
30 Now therefore we have chosen you today to be our ruler and leader in his place, and to fight our battle."	30 Ora, perciò, noi eleggiamo te al suo posto, nostro capo e duce per combattere le nostre guerre".
31 From that moment Jonathan accepted the leadership, and took the place of Judas his brother.	31 Così Gionata in quello stesso giorno assunse il comando e si levò al posto di Giuda, suo fratello.
32 When Bacchides learned of it, he sought to kill him.	32 Quando lo seppe, Bàcchide cercava di ucciderlo.

35 Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them their great quantity of baggage.	35 Gionata mandò suo fratello, capo della turba, a chiedere ai Nabatei suoi amici di poter deporre presso di essi il loro bagaglio che era abbondante.
36 But the sons of Jambri from Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything he had.	36 Ma da Màdaba uscirono i figli di Iambri, catturarono Giovanni con tutte le cose che aveva e se le portarono via.
37 After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."	37 Dopo questo fatto, fu riferito a Gionata e a Simone suo fratello: "I figli di Iambri celebrano un grande sposalizio e da Nàdabat accompagnano la sposa, figlia di uno dei più grandi signori di Canaan, con grande pompa".
38 Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid themselves under cover of the mountain.	38 Si ricordarono allora del sangue di Giovanni, loro fratello, e andarono a nascondersi al riparo di un monte.
39 They watched, and suddenly saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines and musicians and much equipment.	39 Alzarono i loro occhi per osservare ed ecco, tra un vocìo confuso, un grande corteo con lo sposo, i suoi amici e i suoi fratelli, che muovevano incontro a quelli con tamburi, strumenti musicali e grande apparato.
40 The Jews rose up against them from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were taken.	40 Si gettarono allora su di essi dal loro nascondiglio e li massacrarono. 41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of music into lamentation.	41 e così lo sposalizio si cambiò in pianto e il suono dei loro strumenti musicali in lamento.
42 Having taken their revenge for the blood of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan.	42 Avendo in tal modo vendicato il sangue del loro fratello, se ne tornarono alla palude del Giordano.
43 When Bacchides heard of it, he came on the sabbath to the banks of the Jordan with a large force.	43 Bàcchide, avendolo saputo, andò anch'egli in giorno di sabato fino alle rive del Giordano con un grande esercito.
44 Then Jonathan said to his companions, "Let us get up now and fight for our lives, for today is not like yesterday and the day before.	44 Gionata disse a quelli che erano con lui: "Leviamoci e combattiamo per le nostre vite, poiché oggi non è come ieri e l'altro ieri.
45 The battle is before us, and behind us are the waters of the Jordan on one side, marsh and thickets on the other, and there is no way of escape.	45 Ecco, infatti, i nemici davanti e di dietro, l'acqua del Giordano da una parte e dall'altra e poi la palude e la boscaglia, sicché non vi è possibilità di ritirarsi.
46 Cry out now to Heaven for deliverance from our enemies."	46 Ora, dunque, gridate al Cielo affinché possiate salvarvi dalle mani dei nostri nemici".
47 When they joined battle, Jonathan raised his arm to strike Bacchides, but Bacchides backed away from him.	47 Si attaccò battaglia e Gionata stese la mano per colpire Bàcchide, ma questi gli sfuggì piegandosi indietro.
48 Jonathan and his men jumped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, but the enemy did not pursue them across the Jordan.	48 Allora Gionata balzò con i suoi nel Giordano e a nuoto raggiunsero l'altra parte. Gli altri però non attraversarono il Giordano dopo di loro.

50 On returning to Jerusalem, Bacchides built strongholds in Judea: the Jericho fortress, as well as Emmaus, Beth-horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.	50 Bàcchide tornò a Gerusalemme, fece costruire molte fortificazioni nella Giudea, ossia le fortezze di Gèrico, Emmaus, Bet-Oron, Betel, Tamnata, Piraton e Tefon, con alte mura, porte e sbarre
51 In each he put a garrison to oppose Israel.	51 e vi pose delle guarnigioni per infierire contro Israele.
52 He fortified the city of Beth-zur, Gazara and the citadel, and put soldiers in them and stores of provisions.	52 Fortificò ancora la città di Bet-Zur, di Ghezer e l'Acra e vi pose presidi e provviste di viveri.
53 He took as hostages the sons of the leaders of the country and put them in custody in the citadel at Jerusalem.	53 Prese inoltre i figli dei capi della regione come ostaggi e li pose sotto custodia nell'Acra a Gerusalemme.
54 In the year one hundred and fifty-three, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary to be torn down, thus destroying the work of the prophets. But he only began to tear it down.	54 L'anno 153, nel secondo mese, Alcimo comandò di abbattere il muro del cortile interno del santuario, distruggendo così l'opera dei profeti. Fu iniziata l'opera di demolizione,
55 Just at that time he had a stroke, and his work was interrupted; his mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer utter a word to give orders concerning his house.	55 ma in quel tempo Alcimo ebbe un colpo e la sua opera fu interrotta. La sua bocca si chiuse e restò paralizzata, cosicché non poté più articolare parola e impartire ordini riguardo alla sua casa.
56 Finally he died in great agony.	56 Alcimo morì in quel tempo, con grande spasimo
57 Seeing that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was quiet for two years. Bacchides and Jonathan	57 e Bàcchide, appena vide che Alcimo era morto, fece ritorno dal re e così la terra di Giuda rimase tranquilla per due anni.
58 Then all the transgressors of the law held a council and said: "Jonathan and his companions are living in peace and security. Now then, let us have Bacchides return, and he will capture all of them in a single night."	58 Tutti gli iniqui tennero questo consiglio: "Ecco, Gionata e i suoi vivono nella calma con fiducia. Facciamo, dunque, venire Bàcchide ed egli li prenderà tutti in una sola notte".
59 So they went and took counsel with him.	59 Andarono a consigliarsi con lui
60 When Bacchides was setting out with a large force, he sent letters secretly to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his companions. They were not able to do this, however, because their plot became known.	60 ed egli si mosse per venire con un grosso esercito e inviò in segreto delle lettere a tutti i suoi fautori in Giudea affinché catturassero Gionata con i suoi. 61 In fact, Jonathan's men seized about fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in the mischief and put them to death.	61 Anzi, questi catturarono una cinquantina di uomini della regione, che erano stati istigatori di tale iniquità, e li uccisero.
62 Then Jonathan and Simon and their companions withdrew to Bethbasi in the desert; they rebuilt and strengthened its fortifications that had been demolished.	62 Dopo di ciò, Gionata con Simone e i suoi si ritirò a Bet-Basi nel deserto, ne riparò le rovine e la fortificò.

69 he was angry with the lawless men who had advised him to invade the province. 72 and he released the prisoners he had previously taken from the land of Judah. He returned to his own country and never came into their territory again.	72 Gli restituì i prigionieri che aveva catturato in passato nella terra di Giuda; poi, voltatosi, se ne andò al suo paese e non pensò più di tornare nel loro territorio.
73 Then the sword ceased in Israel. Jonathan settled in Michmash; he began to judge the people and he destroyed the impious in Israel.	73 Così si riposò la spada in Israele e Gionata si stabilì a Micmas. Ivi Gionata cominciò a giudicare il popolo e fece sparire gli empi da Israele.
