1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he again sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah, along with the right wing of his army.	1 Demetrio, saputa la morte di Nicà­nore e la sconfitta del suo esercito, decisedi mandare di nuovo in Giudea Bacchide e Alcimo, con l'ala destra del suo esercito.
2 They took the road to Galilee, and camping opposite the ascent at Arbela, they captured it and killed many people.	2 Questi, presa la strada che mena a Gaigala, posero il campo a Masalot, in quel di Arbelle, che essi occuparono, uccidendo molta gente.
3 In the first month of the year one hundred and fifty-two, they encamped against Jerusalem.	3 Il primo mese dell'anno centocinquantadue si avvicinarono coll'esercito a Gerusalemme,
4 Then they set out for Berea with twenty thousand men and two thousand cavalry.	4 e, levato il campo, andarono a Borea, con venti mila fanti e due mila cavalieri.
5 Judas, with three thousand picked men, had camped at Elasa.	5 Giuda, con tre mila uomini scelti, aveva posto il campo a Laisa.
6 When his men saw the great number of the troops, they were very much afraid, and many slipped away from the camp, until only eight hundred men remained.	6 I suoi nel vedere la moltitudine di quell'esercito n'ebbero gran paura, e molti fuggirono dal campo, ove non restarono che ottocento soldati.
7 As Judas saw that his army was melting away just when the battle was imminent, he was panic-stricken, because he had no time to gather them together.	7 Giuda vedendo così assottigliato il suo esercito nell'imminenza della battaglia, senti serrarsi il cuore, perchè non v'era tempo di radunarli, e si scoraggi.
8 But in spite of his discouragement, he said to those who remained: "Let us go forward to meet our enemies; perhaps we can put up a good fight against them."	8 Ma poi disse a quelli che restarono: « Su via, andiamo incontro ai nostri nemici, e tentiamo la battaglia ».
9 They tried to dissuade him, saying: "We certainly cannot. Let us save our lives now, and come back with our kinsmen, and then fight against them. Now we are too few."	9 Ma essi lo dissuadevano, col dire: « È impossibile: è meglio per ora mettersi in salvo, andare a trovare i nostri fratelli, e poi tornare a combattere contro costoro. Ora siam troppo pochi ».
10 But Judas said: "Far be it from me to do such a thing as to flee from them! If our time has come, let us die bravely for our kinsmen and not leave a stain upon our glory!"	10 Ma Giuda disse: « Lungi da noi il fuggire da loro: se è giunta l'ora nostra, moriamo da valorosi per i nostri fratelli, senza lasciare questa macchia alla nostra gloria ».
11 Then the army of Bacchides moved out of camp and took its position for combat. The cavalry were divided into two squadrons, and the slingers and the archers came on ahead of the army, and all the valiant men were in the front line.	11 Mosso l'esercito dagli accampamenti, i nemici vennero loro incontro colla cavalleria divisa in due parti, coi frombolieri e gli arcieri alla testa dell'esercito, con tutta la gente di maggior valore nelle prime file.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two squadrons, the phalanx attacked as they blew their trumpets. Those who were on Judas' side also blew their trumpets.	12 Bacchide era nell'ala destra: le schiere si avvicinavano dai due lati al suono delle trombe.
13 The earth shook with the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning until evening.	13 Anche i soldati di Giuda alzarono le grida: la terra tremò al rumor degli eserciti, e cominciò la battaglia, che durò dalla mattina fino alla sera.
14 Seeing that Bacchides was on the right, with the main force of his army, Judas, with all the most stouthearted rallying to him,	14 Giuda, avendo osservato che la parte più forte dell'esercito di Bacchide era l'ala destra, prese seco i più valorosi
15 drove back the right wing and pursued them as far as the mountain slopes.	15 e la sconfisse, inseguì il nemico fino al monte d'Azoto.
16 But when the men on the left wing saw that the right wing was driven back, they turned and followed Judas and his men, taking them in the rear.	16 Ma quelli dell'ala sinistra, vedendo sconfitta l'ala destra, corsero dietro a Giuda e ai suoi e li presero alle spalle.
17 The battle was fought desperately, and many on both sides fell wounded.	17 La battaglia divenne accanita: vi furono da ambo le parti gran numero di morti.
18 Then Judas fell, and the rest fled.	18 Morì anche Giuda e gli altri fuggirono.
19 Jonathan and Simon took their brother Judas and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein.	19 Gionata e Simone, preso il cadavere di Giuda loro fratello, lo seppellirono nel sepolcro dei suoi padri nella città di Mondin.
20 All Israel bewailed him in great grief. They mourned for him many days, and they said,	20 E tutto il popolo d'Israele ne fece gran lutto, e lo pianse per molto tempo,
21 "How the mighty one has fallen, the savior of Israel!"	21 e dicevano: « Come mai è caduto l'eroe, il salvatore del popolo d'Israele? »
22 The other acts of Judas, his battles, the brave deeds he performed, and his greatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Tutte le altre guerre di Giuda, e gli: eroismi che fece e la sua grandezza non sono scritte, perchè troppo grande ne sarebbe il numero.
23 After the death of Judas, the transgressors of the law raised their heads in every part of Israel, and all kinds of evildoers appeared.	23 Dopo la morte di Giuda, gl'iniqui scapparon fuori in tutto il territorio d'Israele, e alzarono il capo tutti gli operatori; d'iniquità.
24 In those days there was a very great famine, and the country deserted to them.	24 Essendoci stata in quel tempo grandissima fame, tutto il paese e gli abitanti si assoggettarono a Bacchide.
25 Bacchides chose impious men and made them masters of the country.	25 E Bacchide scelse gli uomini empii e li; pose al governo del paese.
26 These sought out and hunted down the friends of Judas and brought them to Bacchides, who punished and derided them.	26 E questi andavano a cercare e a scovare gli amici di; Giuda, e li portavano a Bacchide, che si vendicava sopra di loro e ne prendeva, gioco.
27 There had not been such great distress in Israel since the time prophets ceased to appear among the people.	27 E grande fu la tribolazione in Israele, quale non ci fu mai dal tempo in cui non si vide più un profeta in Israele.
28 Then all the friends of Judas came together and said to Jonathan:	28 Allora si adunarono tutti gli amici dì Giuda e dissero a Gionata:
29 "Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to oppose our enemies, Bacchides and those who are hostile to our nation.	29 « Da che è morto tuo fratello Giuda, non si trova un uomo simile a lui, che possa combattere contro i nostri nemici, contro Bacchide e contro coloro che odiano la nostra nazione.
30 Now therefore we have chosen you today to be our ruler and leader in his place, and to fight our battle."	30 Or noi ti eleggiamo in questo giorno come principe in luogo di lui, e come dùce nelle nostre guerre ».
31 From that moment Jonathan accepted the leadership, and took the place of Judas his brother.	31 Allora Gionata accettò il principato, e successe a Giuda suofratello.
32 When Bacchides learned of it, he sought to kill him.	32 Bacchide, appena avutane la notizia, cercò di farlo uccidere.

35 Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them their great quantity of baggage.	35 E Gionata mandò suo fratello, capo del popolo, a pregare i Nabatei suoi amici, per affidar loro i propri bagagli, che eran imolti.
36 But the sons of Jambri from Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything he had.	36 Ma i figli di lambri, usciti di Madaba, presero Giovanni con tutto quel che aveva, e se ne andarono colla preda.
37 After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."	37 Dopo tali cose fu riferito a Gionata e a Simone suo fratello, che i figli di lambri celebravano delle nozze solenni, e conducevano con gran pompa da Madaba la sposa, la quale era figliola di uno dei più grandi principi di Canaan. 3
38 Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid themselves under cover of the mountain.	38 Allora, ricordandosi del sangue di Giovanni loro fratello, si mossero e si nascosero dietro un riparo del monte.
39 They watched, and suddenly saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines and musicians and much equipment.	39 Alzati gli occhi osservarono, ed ecco gran movimento e numeroso corteo; lo sposo coi suoi amici e i suoi fratelli si avanzava incontro ad essi con timpani e strumenti musicali e molte armi.
40 The Jews rose up against them from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were taken.	40 Allora uscirono dall'imboscata e li assalirono e li uccisero: molti caddero feriti, il resto fuggì alla montagna, ed essi ne presero tutto le spoglie.
41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of music into lamentation.	41 Così le nozze si cambiarono in lutto, e i suoni delle lor musiche in lamentazioni.
42 Having taken their revenge for the blood of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan.	42 Ed essi, vendicato il sangue del loro fratello, tornarono verso le rive del Giordano.
43 When Bacchides heard of it, he came on the sabbath to the banks of the Jordan with a large force.	43 Bacchide, avendo ciò risaputo, in giorno di sabato, con grande esercito, andò fino alle rive del Giordano.
44 Then Jonathan said to his companions, "Let us get up now and fight for our lives, for today is not like yesterday and the day before.	44 Allora donata disse ai suoi: « Su via, combattiamo contro i nostri nemici, perchè noi non siamo nel caso di ieri e dei giorni precedenti:
45 The battle is before us, and behind us are the waters of the Jordan on one side, marsh and thickets on the other, and there is no way of escape.	45 abbiamo infatti di faccia in armi il nemico, di qua e di là le acque del Giordano, le rive, le paludi, le boscaglie; non c'è luogo di uscita.
46 Cry out now to Heaven for deliverance from our enemies."	46 Or dunque alzate le voci al cielo, per esser liberati dalle mani dei vostri nemici ». E si attaccò la battaglia.
47 When they joined battle, Jonathan raised his arm to strike Bacchides, but Bacchides backed away from him.	47 Gionata stese la mano per colpire; Bacchide, ma questi lo schivò, tirandosi indietro.
48 Jonathan and his men jumped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, but the enemy did not pursue them across the Jordan.	48 E Gionata e i suoi saltarono nel Giordano, e lo passarono a nuoto sotto gli occhi dei nemici.
49 A thousand men on Bacchides' side fell that day.	49 E dei soldati di Bacchide perirono in quel giorno mille uomini, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme.
50 On returning to Jerusalem, Bacchides built strongholds in Judea: the Jericho fortress, as well as Emmaus, Beth-horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.	50 E fecero delle piazze forti nella Giudea: le fortezze che erano in Gerico, in Ammaus, in Betoron, in Betel, in Tamnata, in Fara, in Topo, le munirono di alte mura, di porte e di sbarre.
51 In each he put a garrison to oppose Israel.	51 E (Bacchide) vi mise dei presidii per rinnovare le ostilità contro Israele.
52 He fortified the city of Beth-zur, Gazara and the citadel, and put soldiers in them and stores of provisions.	52 E fortificò la città di Betsura, e Gazara, e la cittadella, e vi pose dei presidii e depositi di viveri.
53 He took as hostages the sons of the leaders of the country and put them in custody in the citadel at Jerusalem.	53 Presi poi in ostaggio i figli dei principali del paese, li tenne prigionieri nella cittadella di Gerusalemme.
54 In the year one hundred and fifty-three, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary to be torn down, thus destroying the work of the prophets. But he only began to tear it down.	54 Or nell'anno centocinquantatrè, nel secondo mese, Alcimo comandò di atterrare il muro della parte interiore della casa santa, e di distruggere le opere dei profeti, e cominciò a distruggere.
55 Just at that time he had a stroke, and his work was interrupted; his mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer utter a word to give orders concerning his house.	55 Ma in quel tempo Alcimo fu percosso (da Dio), e le sue imprese furono impedite; la sua bocca restò chiusa, fu tutto paralizzato, e non potè più dire una parola, nè dare alcun ordine riguardo alla sua casa.
56 Finally he died in great agony.	56 E in quel tempo morì Aleimo, in mezzo a grandi tormenti.
57 Seeing that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was quiet for two years. Bacchides and Jonathan	57 Visto che Alcimo era morto, Bacchide se ne tornò al re, e il paese stette in pace per due anni.
58 Then all the transgressors of the law held a council and said: "Jonathan and his companions are living in peace and security. Now then, let us have Bacchides return, and he will capture all of them in a single night."	58 Allora tutti gl'iniqui pensarono e dissero: « Ecco Gionata e i suoi stanno tranquilli, senza alcun timore: or dunque facciamo venire Bacchide, e li prenderà tutti in una sola notte.
59 So they went and took counsel with him.	59 E andarono a dargli questo consiglio.
60 When Bacchides was setting out with a large force, he sent letters secretly to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his companions. They were not able to do this, however, because their plot became known.	60 Ed egli si mise in marcia con grosso esercito, e scrisse segretamente ai suoi partigiani che erano nella Giudea, d'impadronirsi di Gionata e della sua gente; ma non poteron farlo, perchè i loro disegni furon da essi conosciuti.
61 In fact, Jonathan's men seized about fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in the mischief and put them to death.	61 E (Gionata) prese cinquanta uomini del paese, che erano stati a capo delle milizie e li fece morire.
62 Then Jonathan and Simon and their companions withdrew to Bethbasi in the desert; they rebuilt and strengthened its fortifications that had been demolished.	62 Poi Gionata e Simone colla loro gente si ritirarono a Betbessen, che è nel deserto, ne ripararono le rovine e la fortificarono.
63 When Bacchides learned of this, he gathered together his whole force and sent word to those who were in Judea.	63 Bacchide, saputa la cosa, radunò tutte le sue truppe, e ne mandò avviso a quelli che erano nella Giudea.
64 He came and pitched his camp before Bethbasi, and constructing siege-machines, he fought against it for many days.	64 E andò a porre il campo sopra Betbessen, e l'assediò per molti giorni, e fece le macchine.
65 Leaving his brother Simon in the city, Jonathan, accompanied by a small group of men, went out into the field.	65 Ma Gionata, lasciato nella città Simone suo fratello, so ne andò pel paese e tornò con un po' di gente.
66 He struck down Odomera and his kinsmen and the sons of Phasiron in their encampment; these men had set out to go up to the siege with their forces.	66 E battè Odaren e i suoi fratelli, e i figli di Faseron nelle loro tende, e cominciò a fare strage e a crescere nelle forze.
67 Simon and his men then sallied forth from the city and set fire to the machines.	67 Intanto Simone e la sua gente uscirono dalla città e die dero fuoco alle macchine.
68 They fought against Bacchides, and he was beaten. This caused him great distress. Because the enterprise he had planned came to nought,	68 Allora assalirono Bacchide e lo sconfissero e lo gettarono in profonda tristezza facendogli andare in fumo tutti i suoi disegni e i suoi tentativi.
69 he was angry with the lawless men who had advised him to invade the province. 70 Jonathan learned of this and sent ambassadors to make peace with him and to obtain the release of the prisoners.	70 Gionata, quando lo seppe, gli spedì ambasciatori per far pace con lui e riavere i prigionieri.
71 He agreed to do as Jonathan had asked. He swore an oath to him that he would never try to injure him for the rest of his life;	71 L'altro li accolse e ne accettò le proposte, e giurò di non fargli alcun male per tutto il tempo della sua vita,
72 and he released the prisoners he had previously taken from the land of Judah. He returned to his own country and never came into their territory again.	72 e gli restituì i prigionieri che nel passato aveva fatti nel paese di Giuda, e parti, e se ne andò al suo paese, e non tornò mai più nella Giudea.
73 Then the sword ceased in Israel. Jonathan settled in Michmash; he began to judge the people and he destroyed the impious in Israel.	73 Così fini la guerra in Israele. Gionata fissò la sua dimora a Macmas, ed ivi cominciò a render giustizia al popolo, e fece sparire gli empi da Israele.
