1 When Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army had fallen in battle, he again sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judah, along with the right wing of his army.	1 Quando Demetrio seppe che era morto Nicànore ed era stato distrutto il suo esercito in combattimento, decise di mandare di nuovo Bàcchide e Àlcimo in Giudea e l’ala destra dell’esercito con loro.
2 They took the road to Galilee, and camping opposite the ascent at Arbela, they captured it and killed many people.	2 Seguirono la via di Gàlgala e si accamparono sopra Mesalòt in Arbela; la occuparono e vi fecero morire molti uomini.
3 In the first month of the year one hundred and fifty-two, they encamped against Jerusalem.	3 Nel primo mese dell’anno centocinquantadue posero il campo contro Gerusalemme.
4 Then they set out for Berea with twenty thousand men and two thousand cavalry.	4 Poi lo tolsero e si portarono a Berea con ventimila fanti e duemila cavalieri.
5 Judas, with three thousand picked men, had camped at Elasa.	5 Giuda era accampato a Elasà con tremila uomini scelti.
6 When his men saw the great number of the troops, they were very much afraid, and many slipped away from the camp, until only eight hundred men remained.	6 Quando videro la massa di un esercito così numeroso, ne rimasero sgomenti e molti si dileguarono dal campo e non restarono che ottocento uomini.
7 As Judas saw that his army was melting away just when the battle was imminent, he was panic-stricken, because he had no time to gather them together.	7 Giuda vide che il suo esercito si disgregava mentre la battaglia incalzava; si sentì venire meno il cuore, perché non aveva possibilità di radunare i suoi,
8 But in spite of his discouragement, he said to those who remained: "Let us go forward to meet our enemies; perhaps we can put up a good fight against them."	8 e tutto affranto disse ai superstiti: «Alziamoci e andiamo contro i nostri avversari, nella speranza di poterli debellare».
9 They tried to dissuade him, saying: "We certainly cannot. Let us save our lives now, and come back with our kinsmen, and then fight against them. Now we are too few."	9 Ma lo dissuadevano dicendo: «Per il momento non riusciremo a fare altro che metterci in salvo, ma torneremo poi con i nostri fratelli e combatteremo contro di loro; da soli siamo troppo pochi».
10 But Judas said: "Far be it from me to do such a thing as to flee from them! If our time has come, let us die bravely for our kinsmen and not leave a stain upon our glory!"	10 Giuda disse: «Non faremo mai una cosa simile: fuggire da loro! Se è giunta la nostra ora, moriamo da eroi per i nostri fratelli e non lasciamo ombra alla nostra gloria».
11 Then the army of Bacchides moved out of camp and took its position for combat. The cavalry were divided into two squadrons, and the slingers and the archers came on ahead of the army, and all the valiant men were in the front line.	11 L’esercito nemico uscì dal campo, schierandosi contro i Giudei: la cavalleria si divise in due ali e i frombolieri e gli arcieri precedevano lo schieramento; i più validi erano tutti in prima fila e Bàcchide stava all’ala destra.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. Flanked by the two squadrons, the phalanx attacked as they blew their trumpets. Those who were on Judas' side also blew their trumpets.	12 La falange si mosse avanzando ai due lati, al suono delle trombe; anche dalla parte di Giuda si diede fiato alle trombe.
13 The earth shook with the noise of the armies, and the battle raged from morning until evening.	13 La terra fu scossa dal fragore degli eserciti. Si scatenò la battaglia che durò dal mattino fino a sera.
14 Seeing that Bacchides was on the right, with the main force of his army, Judas, with all the most stouthearted rallying to him,	14 Giuda notò che Bàcchide e la parte più forte dell’esercito erano a destra: allora si unirono a lui tutti i più coraggiosi
15 drove back the right wing and pursued them as far as the mountain slopes.	15 e fu travolta l’ala destra dal loro urto ed egli la inseguì fino al monte di Azoto.
16 But when the men on the left wing saw that the right wing was driven back, they turned and followed Judas and his men, taking them in the rear.	16 Ma quelli dell’ala sinistra, vedendo che era stata sconfitta l’ala destra, si volsero sugli stessi passi di Giuda e dei suoi uomini assalendoli alle spalle.
17 The battle was fought desperately, and many on both sides fell wounded.	17 Così si accese la battaglia e caddero molti feriti a morte, da una parte e dall’altra;
18 Then Judas fell, and the rest fled.	18 cadde anche Giuda e gli altri fuggirono.
19 Jonathan and Simon took their brother Judas and buried him in the tomb of their fathers at Modein.	19 Giònata e Simone raccolsero Giuda, loro fratello, e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro dei suoi padri, a Modin.
20 All Israel bewailed him in great grief. They mourned for him many days, and they said,	20 Tutto Israele lo pianse: furono in gran lutto e fecero lamenti per molti giorni, esclamando:
21 "How the mighty one has fallen, the savior of Israel!"	21 «Come è potuto cadere l’eroe che salvava Israele?».
22 The other acts of Judas, his battles, the brave deeds he performed, and his greatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Il resto delle imprese di Giuda e delle battaglie, degli eroismi di cui diede prova e dei suoi titoli di gloria non è stato scritto, perché troppo grande era il loro numero.
23 After the death of Judas, the transgressors of the law raised their heads in every part of Israel, and all kinds of evildoers appeared.	23 Dopo la morte di Giuda riapparvero gli iniqui in tutto il territorio d’Israele e risorsero tutti gli operatori d’ingiustizia.
24 In those days there was a very great famine, and the country deserted to them.	24 In quei giorni sopravvenne una terribile carestia e gli stessi abitanti della regione passarono dalla loro parte.
25 Bacchides chose impious men and made them masters of the country.	25 Bàcchide scelse uomini rinnegati e li fece padroni della regione.
26 These sought out and hunted down the friends of Judas and brought them to Bacchides, who punished and derided them.	26 Si diedero a ricercare e braccare gli amici di Giuda e li conducevano da Bàcchide, che si vendicava di loro e li scherniva.
27 There had not been such great distress in Israel since the time prophets ceased to appear among the people.	27 Ci fu grande tribolazione in Israele, come non si verificava dal giorno in cui non era più apparso un profeta in mezzo a loro.
28 Then all the friends of Judas came together and said to Jonathan:	28 Allora tutti gli amici di Giuda si radunarono e dissero a Giònata:
29 "Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to oppose our enemies, Bacchides and those who are hostile to our nation.	29 «Da quando è morto tuo fratello Giuda, non c’è uomo simile a lui per condurre l’azione contro i nemici e Bàcchide, e contro gli avversari della nostra nazione.
30 Now therefore we have chosen you today to be our ruler and leader in his place, and to fight our battle."	30 Ora noi oggi eleggiamo te nostro capo e condottiero al suo posto, per combattere le nostre battaglie».
31 From that moment Jonathan accepted the leadership, and took the place of Judas his brother.	31 Giònata assunse il comando in quella occasione e prese il posto di Giuda, suo fratello.
32 When Bacchides learned of it, he sought to kill him.	32 Bàcchide, avutane notizia, cercava di ucciderlo.
33 But Jonathan and his brother Simon and all the men with him discovered this, and they fled to the desert of Tekoa and camped by the waters of the pool of Asphar.	33 Ma Giònata e Simone, suo fratello, con tutti i loro seguaci, lo seppero e fuggirono nel deserto di Tekòa e si accamparono presso la cisterna di Asfar.
34	34 Bàcchide però lo venne a sapere in giorno di sabato e si portò anche lui con tutto il suo esercito al di là del Giordano.
35 Jonathan sent his brother as leader of the convoy to ask permission of his friends, the Nabateans, to deposit with them their great quantity of baggage.	35 Giònata inviò suo fratello, capo della turba, a chiedere ai Nabatei, suoi amici, di poter deporre presso di loro i propri equipaggiamenti, che erano abbondanti.
36 But the sons of Jambri from Medaba made a raid and seized and carried off John and everything he had.	36 Ma i figli di Iambrì, che abitavano a Màdaba, fecero una razzia e catturarono Giovanni con tutte le cose che aveva e portarono via tutto.
37 After this, word was brought to Jonathan and his brother Simon: "The sons of Jambri are celebrating a great wedding, and with a large escort they are bringing the bride, the daughter of one of the great princes of Canaan, from Nadabath."	37 Dopo questo fatto riferirono a Giònata e a Simone, suo fratello: «I figli di Iambrì celebrano una grande festa di nozze e da Nadabàt conducono la sposa, figlia di uno dei grandi magnati di Canaan, con corteo solenne».
38 Remembering the blood of John their brother, they went up and hid themselves under cover of the mountain.	38 Si ricordarono allora del sangue del loro fratello Giovanni, perciò si mossero e si appostarono in un antro del monte.
39 They watched, and suddenly saw a noisy crowd with baggage; the bridegroom and his friends and kinsmen had come out to meet the bride's party with tambourines and musicians and much equipment.	39 Ed ecco, alzando gli occhi, videro un corteo numeroso e festante e lo sposo con gli amici e i fratelli, che avanzava incontro al corteo, con tamburelli e strumenti musicali e grande apparato.
40 The Jews rose up against them from their ambush and killed them. Many fell wounded, and after the survivors fled toward the mountain, all their spoils were taken.	40 Balzando sopra di loro dall’appostamento in cui si trovavano, li trucidarono; molti caddero colpiti a morte mentre gli altri ripararono sul monte, ed essi presero le loro spoglie.
41 Thus the wedding was turned into mourning, and the sound of music into lamentation.	41 Le nozze furono mutate in lutto e i suoni delle loro musiche in lamento.
42 Having taken their revenge for the blood of their brother, the Jews returned to the marshes of the Jordan.	42 Così vendicarono il sangue del loro fratello e ritornarono nelle paludi del Giordano.
43 When Bacchides heard of it, he came on the sabbath to the banks of the Jordan with a large force.	43 Bàcchide ne ebbe notizia e venne in giorno di sabato fin sulle sponde del Giordano con un numeroso esercito.
44 Then Jonathan said to his companions, "Let us get up now and fight for our lives, for today is not like yesterday and the day before.	44 Giònata disse ai suoi: «Alziamoci e combattiamo per la nostra vita, perché oggi non è come ieri e l’altro ieri.
45 The battle is before us, and behind us are the waters of the Jordan on one side, marsh and thickets on the other, and there is no way of escape.	45 Ecco, abbiamo i nemici di fronte a noi e alle spalle, dall’uno e dall’altro lato abbiamo l’acqua del Giordano, la palude e la boscaglia: non c’è possibilità di scampo.
46 Cry out now to Heaven for deliverance from our enemies."	46 Alzate perciò ora le vostre grida al Cielo, perché possiate salvarvi dalla mano dei vostri nemici».
47 When they joined battle, Jonathan raised his arm to strike Bacchides, but Bacchides backed away from him.	47 E si attaccò battaglia. Giònata stese la mano per colpire Bàcchide, ma questi lo scansò e si tirò indietro.
48 Jonathan and his men jumped into the Jordan and swam across to the other side, but the enemy did not pursue them across the Jordan.	48 Allora Giònata e i suoi uomini si gettarono nel Giordano e raggiunsero a nuoto l’altra sponda; ma gli altri non passarono il Giordano per inseguirli.
49 A thousand men on Bacchides' side fell that day.	49 Dalla parte di Bàcchide caddero in quella giornata circa mille uomini.
50 On returning to Jerusalem, Bacchides built strongholds in Judea: the Jericho fortress, as well as Emmaus, Beth-horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon, and Tephon, with high walls and gates and bars.	50 Bàcchide poi tornò a Gerusalemme ed edificò fortezze in tutta la Giudea: le fortezze di Gerico, Èmmaus, Bet-Oron, Betel, Tamnata, Piratòn e Tefon, con mura alte, porte e sbarre, e
51 In each he put a garrison to oppose Israel.	51 vi pose un presidio per molestare Israele.
52 He fortified the city of Beth-zur, Gazara and the citadel, and put soldiers in them and stores of provisions.	52 Fortificò anche la città di Bet-Sur, Ghezer e la Cittadella e vi stabilì milizie e vettovaglie.
53 He took as hostages the sons of the leaders of the country and put them in custody in the citadel at Jerusalem.	53 Prese come ostaggi i figli dei capi della regione e li pose come prigionieri nella Cittadella a Gerusalemme.
54 In the year one hundred and fifty-three, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary to be torn down, thus destroying the work of the prophets. But he only began to tear it down.	54 Nell’anno centocinquantatré, nel secondo mese, Àlcimo ordinò di demolire il muro del cortile interno del santuario; distrusse così l’opera dei profeti. Si incominciò dunque a demolire.
55 Just at that time he had a stroke, and his work was interrupted; his mouth was closed and he was paralyzed, so that he could no longer utter a word to give orders concerning his house.	55 Ma in quel tempo Àlcimo ebbe un grave malore e la sua opera fu interrotta. La sua bocca rimase impedita e paralizzata, e non poteva più parlare né dare disposizioni per la sua casa.
56 Finally he died in great agony.	56 Àlcimo morì in quel tempo con grande tormento.
57 Seeing that Alcimus was dead, Bacchides returned to the king, and the land of Judah was quiet for two years. Bacchides and Jonathan	57 Bàcchide, vedendo che Àlcimo era morto, se ne tornò presso il re, e la Giudea rimase tranquilla per due anni.
58 Then all the transgressors of the law held a council and said: "Jonathan and his companions are living in peace and security. Now then, let us have Bacchides return, and he will capture all of them in a single night."	58 Tutti gli iniqui tennero questo consiglio: «Ecco, Giònata e i suoi vivono tranquilli e sicuri. Noi dunque faremo venire Bàcchide, che li catturerà tutti in una sola notte».
59 So they went and took counsel with him.	59 Andarono e tennero consiglio da lui.
60 When Bacchides was setting out with a large force, he sent letters secretly to all his allies in Judea, telling them to seize Jonathan and his companions. They were not able to do this, however, because their plot became known.	60 Egli si mosse per venire con un esercito numeroso e mandò di nascosto lettere a tutti i suoi fautori nella Giudea, perché s’impadronissero di Giònata e dei suoi. Ma non vi riuscirono, perché era stata svelata la loro trama.
61 In fact, Jonathan's men seized about fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in the mischief and put them to death.	61 Anzi, questi presero una cinquantina di uomini, tra i promotori di tale scelleratezza nel paese, e li misero a morte.
62 Then Jonathan and Simon and their companions withdrew to Bethbasi in the desert; they rebuilt and strengthened its fortifications that had been demolished.	62 Poi Giònata e Simone con i loro uomini si ritirarono a Bet-Basì nel deserto, ricostruirono le sue rovine e la fortificarono.
63 When Bacchides learned of this, he gathered together his whole force and sent word to those who were in Judea.	63 Lo seppe Bàcchide; radunò la sua gente e avvisò quelli della Giudea.
64 He came and pitched his camp before Bethbasi, and constructing siege-machines, he fought against it for many days.	64 Quindi andò ad accamparsi presso Bet-Basì e l’attaccò per molti giorni allestendo anche macchine.
65 Leaving his brother Simon in the city, Jonathan, accompanied by a small group of men, went out into the field.	65 Giònata lasciò Simone, suo fratello, nella città e uscì nella regione, percorrendola con un drappello di armati.
66 He struck down Odomera and his kinsmen and the sons of Phasiron in their encampment; these men had set out to go up to the siege with their forces.	66 Batté Odomerà con i suoi fratelli e i figli di Fasiròn nel loro attendamento. Cominciarono così a battersi e aumentarono di forze.
67 Simon and his men then sallied forth from the city and set fire to the machines.	67 Simone, a sua volta, e i suoi fecero una sortita dalla città e incendiarono le macchine.
68 They fought against Bacchides, and he was beaten. This caused him great distress. Because the enterprise he had planned came to nought,	68 Poi attaccarono Bàcchide, che fu da loro sconfitto, e lo posero in grande angustia, perché il suo piano e la sua impresa erano andati a vuoto.
69 he was angry with the lawless men who had advised him to invade the province. 70 Jonathan learned of this and sent ambassadors to make peace with him and to obtain the release of the prisoners.	70 Giònata lo seppe e gli mandò messaggeri per concludere la pace e scambiare i prigionieri.
71 He agreed to do as Jonathan had asked. He swore an oath to him that he would never try to injure him for the rest of his life;	71 Quegli accettò e fece secondo le sue proposte, giurandogli che non gli avrebbe recato alcun male per il resto dei suoi giorni;
72 and he released the prisoners he had previously taken from the land of Judah. He returned to his own country and never came into their territory again.	72 gli restituì i prigionieri che prima aveva catturato nella Giudea e, messosi sulla via del ritorno, se ne andò nella sua terra e non volle più tornare nel loro territorio.
73 Then the sword ceased in Israel. Jonathan settled in Michmash; he began to judge the people and he destroyed the impious in Israel.	73 Così si riposò la spada in Israele. Giònata si stabilì a Micmas. Incominciò a governare il popolo e fece sparire i rinnegati da Israele.
