KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.1 Now in regard to spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware.
Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.2 You know how, when you were pagans, you were constantly attracted and led away to mute idols.
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.3 Therefore, I tell you that nobody speaking by the spirit of God says, "Jesus be accursed." And no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the holy Spirit.
Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.5 there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.6 there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.7 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;8 To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit;
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:10 to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues.
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.11 But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.12 As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ.
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.
For the body is not one member, but many.14 Now the body is not a single part, but many.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?15 If a foot should say, "Because I am not a hand I do not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.
And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?16 Or if an ear should say, "Because I am not an eye I do not belong to the body," it does not for this reason belong any less to the body.
If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.18 But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended.
And if they were all one member, where were the body?19 If they were all one part, where would the body be?
But now are they many members, yet but one body.20 But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," nor again the head to the feet, "I do not need you."
Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:22 Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary,
And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.23 and those parts of the body that we consider less honorable we surround with greater honor, and our less presentable parts are treated with greater propriety,
For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:24 whereas our more presentable parts do not need this. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it,
That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.25 so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another.
And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.26 If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.
Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.27 Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it.
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.28 Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues.
Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds?
Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.31 Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way.
