Sirach 33

1 There shall no evil happen unto him that feareth the Lord; but in temptation even again he will deliver him.	1 Le malheur ne recherche pas celui qui craint le Seigneur; s’il connaît l’épreuve il en sera racheté.
2 A wise man hateth not the law; but he that is an hypocrite therein is as a ship in a storm.	2 L’homme sage ne déteste pas la Loi, celui qui ne la suit qu’en apparence est comme un bateau dans la tempête.
3 A man of understanding trusteth in the law; and the law is faithful unto him, as an oracle.	3 L’homme intelligent met sa confiance dans la Loi; pour lui la Loi est digne de foi comme une réponse divine.
4 Prepare what to say, and so thou shalt be heard: and bind up instruction, and then make answer.	4 Prépare ton discours et tu seras écouté: fais une bonne synthèse, et ensuite parle.
5 The heart of the foolish is like a cartwheel; and his thoughts are like a rolling axletree.	5 Les sentiments du sot sont comme une roue de chariot, ses raisonnements font la girouette.
6 A stallion horse is as a mocking friend, he neigheth under every one that sitteth upon him.	6 Un ami moqueur est comme un étalon excité, il hennit sous n’importe quel cavalier.
7 Why doth one day excel another, when as all the light of every day in the year is of the sun?	7 Pourquoi tel jour est-il plus important qu’un autre, puisque tous les jours reçoivent la lumière du soleil?
8 By the knowledge of the Lord they were distinguished: and he altered seasons and feasts.	8 Une décision du Seigneur les a faits différents, lui qui a disposé les fêtes et les saisons.
9 Some of them hath he made high days, and hallowed them, and some of them hath he made ordinary days.	9 Il a élevé et sanctifié certains d’entre eux; les autres il les a pris pour faire nombre.
10 And all men are from the ground, and Adam was created of earth:	10 Les hommes aussi sont tous tirés du sol, et c’est de la terre qu’Adam fut formé.
11 In much knowledge the Lord hath divided them, and made their ways diverse.	11 Le Seigneur pourtant, dans sa sagesse universelle, les a séparés, les plaçant sur des chemins différents.
12 Some of them hath he blessed and exalted and some of them he sanctified, and set near himself: but some of them hath he cursed and brought low, and turned out of their places.	12 Il a béni et exalté certains d’entre eux, il les a consacrés et pris à son service; d’autres, il les a maudits et abaissés, il leur a fait perdre leur place.
13 As the clay is in the potter's hand, to fashion it at his pleasure: so man is in the hand of him that made him, to render to them as liketh him best.	13 Comme la glaise est dans la main du potier qui la modèle à son goût, ainsi les hommes sont dans la main de celui qui les a faits: il traite chacun comme il le juge bon.
14 Good is set against evil, and life against death: so is the godly against the sinner, and the sinner against the godly.	14 D’un côté le mal, de l’autre le bien; d’un côté la mort, de l’autre la vie: et de même le pécheur face au fidèle.
15 So look upon all the works of the most High; and there are two and two, one against another.	15 Regarde d’ailleurs toutes les œuvres du Très-Haut; elles vont par deux, l’une s’opposant à l’autre.
16 I awaked up last of all, as one that gathereth after the grapegatherers: by the blessing of the Lord I profited, and tred my winepress like a gatherer of grapes.	16 Quant à moi, j’ai veillé après tous les autres, semblable à celui qui grappille derrière les vendangeurs.
17 Consider that I laboured not for myself only, but for all them that seek learning.	17 Mais par la bénédiction du Seigneur je suis arrivé en tête et j’ai rempli de grappes le pressoir.
18 Hear me, O ye great men of the people, and hearken with your ears, ye rulers of the congregation.	18 Comprenez que je n’ai pas peiné pour moi seul, mais pour tous ceux qui cherchent le savoir.
19 Give not thy son and wife, thy brother and friend, power over thee while thou livest, and give not thy goods to another: lest it repent thee, and thou intreat for the same again.	19 Écoutez-moi donc, grands du peuple; prêtez l’oreille, vous qui présidez l’assemblée!
20 As long as thou livest and hast breath in thee, give not thyself over to any.	20 Ni à ton fils, ni à ta femme, ou à ton frère ou ton ami: à aucun ne donne pouvoir sur toi durant ta vie! Ne donne pas tes biens à un autre; tu pourrais le regretter et devoir les redemander.
21 For better it is that thy children should seek to thee, than that thou shouldest stand to their courtesy.	21 Tant qu’il te reste un souffle de vie, ne livre à personne ta liberté.
22 In all thy works keep to thyself the preeminence; leave not a stain in thine honour.	22 Il vaut mieux que tes enfants dépendent de toi plutôt que d’avoir toi-même à les supplier.
23 At the time when thou shalt end thy days, and finish thy life, distribute thine inheritance.	23 Garde la responsabilité de tout ce que tu fais, ne permets pas que d’autres tachent ta réputation.
24 Fodder, a wand, and burdens, are for the ass; and bread, correction, and work, for a servant. .	24 Au jour qui conclura les jours de ta vie, quand sera venue l’heure de ta fin, alors tu répartiras l’héritage.
25 If thou set thy servant to labour, thou shalt find rest: but if thou let him go idle, he shall seek liberty.	25 Pour l’âne: le fourrage, le bâton et les fardeaux; pour le serviteur: le pain, les corrections et le travail.
26 A yoke and a collar do bow the neck: so are tortures and torments for an evil servant.	26 Travaille sur ton esclave et tu auras la paix; relâche-lui la bride et il voudra la liberté.
27 Send him to labour, that he be not idle; for idleness teacheth much evil.	27 Le joug et le licol font plier le cou; pour le mauvais serviteur, les châtiments et les chaînes.
28 Set him to work, as is fit for him: if he be not obedient, put on more heavy fetters.	28 Mets-le au travail, qu’il ne reste pas oisif, car l’oisiveté enseigne le mal.
29 But be not excessive toward any; and without discretion do nothing.	29 Fais-le travailler selon sa capacité, et s’il n’obéit pas mets-lui des fers aux pieds.
30 If thou have a servant, let him be unto thee as thyself, because thou hast bought him with a price.	30 Mais ne sois trop exigeant envers personne, ne fais rien sans discernement.
31 If thou have a servant, entreat him as a brother: for thou hast need of him, as of thine own soul: if thou entreat him evil, and he run from thee, which way wilt thou go to seek him?	31 Si tu as un domestique, qu’il soit comme un autre toi-même, puisque tu l’as acquis par le sang.
32 []	32 Si tu as un domestique, traite-le comme un frère, puisque tu as besoin de lui comme de toi.
33 []	33 Si tu le maltraites et qu’il prenne la fuite, où iras-tu le chercher?
