Proverbs 3

1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:	1 N’oublie pas, mon fils, mes avertissements, que ton cœur sache garder mes commandements.
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.	2 Ils prolongeront tes jours, ils te donneront la prospérité, des années de vie.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:	3 Que ni la bonté, ni la fidélité, ne te fassent défaut! Attache-les à ton cou, inscris-les sur les tablettes de ton cœur;
4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.	4 c’est ainsi que tu gagneras bienveillance et estime, de Dieu et des hommes.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.	5 D’un cœur entier fais confiance au Seigneur, et ne te fie pas à ta propre sagesse.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.	6 Quoi que tu fasses, tiens compte de lui: il aplanira tes chemins.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.	7 Ne te crois pas le plus sage: aie la crainte de Yahvé et tiens-toi à l’écart du mal.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.	8 Ce sera un remède pour ton corps, tu y retrouveras la vigueur.
9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:	9 Fais ton offrande à Yahvé, prise sur tes biens, les premiers fruits de tes récoltes;
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.	10 alors tes greniers se rempliront de blé et tes cuves déborderont de vin nouveau.
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:	11 Mon fils, ne méprise pas les avertissements de Yahvé, ne t’insurge pas contre sa réprimande;
12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.	12 car le Seigneur corrige celui qu’il aime, tout comme un père reprend le fils qu’il chérit.
13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.	13 Heureux le mortel qui a trouvé la sagesse, l’homme qui a obtenu l’intelligence!
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.	14 Provision de sagesse vaut mieux qu’argent en banque; elle te rapporte plus que de l’or.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.	15 Elle est plus précieuse que les perles, rien de ce qui t’attire ne peut l’égaler.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.	16 De sa main droite elle t’offre longue vie, et de l’autre, richesse et gloire.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.	17 Elle te mènera par des chemins plaisants, tous ses sentiers sont sûrs.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.	18 Elle est un arbre de vie pour qui s’y attache; heureux ceux qui ont trouvé la sagesse!
19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.	19 C’est par la sagesse que Yahvé a mis la terre en place; par l’intelligence il a fixé le firmament;
20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.	20 par sa science les eaux jaillirent des profondeurs et les nuages déversèrent la pluie.
21 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:	21 Agis toujours, mon fils, avec prudence et réflexion: c’est une chose que tu n’oublieras pas.
22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.	22 De là te viendra la vie: tu la sentiras en toi, elle rayonnera sur ton visage.
23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.	23 Alors tu t’avanceras avec confiance, sans peur de trébucher.
24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.	24 Tu iras te coucher sans crainte et durant la nuit ton sommeil sera paisible.
25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.	25 Tu n’auras pas à craindre une catastrophe soudaine, ou l’attaque imprévue des malfaiteurs.
26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.	26 Car Yahvé sera à tes côtés et ton pied ne se prendra pas dans le piège.
27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.	27 Ne refuse pas une faveur à qui te demande, si tu peux le faire.
28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.	28 Si tu peux le faire tout de suite, ne dis pas à ton prochain: “Va-t’en, tu reviendras demain et je te le donnerai”.
29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.	29 Ne joue pas un mauvais tour à ton prochain, alors qu’il a confiance en toi.
30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.	30 Ne te dispute pas sans motif avec un autre, alors qu’il ne t’a rien fait de mal.
31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.	31 N’envie pas les violents, n’imite pas leur conduite;
32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.	32 car Yahvé a en horreur les gens sans conscience, c’est aux justes que va son amitié.
33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.	33 Yahvé maudit la maison du méchant, il bénit la demeure des justes.
34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.	34 Il se moque des moqueurs, il accorde sa faveur aux humbles.
35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.	35 La gloire est réservée aux sages, et les sots n’auront que le mépris.
