Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:1 A Canticle in steps. From the depths, I have cried out to you, O Lord.
Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.2 O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.3 If you, O Lord, were to heed iniquities, who, O Lord, could persevere?
The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.4 For with you, there is forgiveness, and because of your law, I persevered with you, Lord. My soul has persevered in his word.
Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.5 My soul has hoped in the Lord.
Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:6 From the morning watch, even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.
Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.7 For with the Lord there is mercy, and with him there is bountiful redemption.
Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
