KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.1 "Give thanks to the LORD who is good, whose love endures forever!"
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;2 Let that be the prayer of the LORD'S redeemed, those redeemed from the hand of the foe,
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.3 Those gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south.
They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.4 Some had lost their way in a barren desert; found no path toward a city to live in.
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.5 They were hungry and thirsty; their life was ebbing away.
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.6 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who rescued them in their peril,
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.7 Guided them by a direct path so they reached a city to live in.
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!8 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.9 For he satisfied the thirsty, filled the hungry with good things.
Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;10 Some lived in darkness and gloom, in prison, bound with chains,
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:11 Because they rebelled against God's word, scorned the counsel of the Most High,
Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.12 Who humbled their hearts through hardship; they stumbled with no one to help.
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.13 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who saved them in their peril,
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.14 Led them forth from darkness and gloom and broke their chains asunder.
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!15 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.16 For he broke down the gates of bronze and snapped the bars of iron.
Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.17 Some fell sick from their wicked ways, afflicted because of their sins.
Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.18 They loathed all manner of food; they were at the gates of death.
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.19 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who saved them in their peril,
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.20 Sent forth the word to heal them, snatched them from the grave.
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!21 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.22 Let them offer a sacrifice in thanks, declare his works with shouts of joy.
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;23 Some went off to sea in ships, plied their trade on the deep waters.
These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.24 They saw the works of the LORD, the wonders of God in the deep.
For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.25 He spoke and roused a storm wind; it tossed the waves on high.
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.26 They rose up to the heavens, sank to the depths; their hearts trembled at the danger.
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.27 They reeled, staggered like drunkards; their skill was of no avail.
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.28 In their distress they cried to the LORD, who brought them out of their peril,
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.29 Hushed the storm to a murmur; the waves of the sea were stilled.
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.30 They rejoiced that the sea grew calm, that God brought them to the harbor they longed for.
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!31 Let them thank the LORD for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals.
Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.32 Let them praise him in the assembly of the people, give thanks in the council of the elders.
He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;33 God changed rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.34 Fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the wickedness of its people.
He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.35 He changed the desert into pools of water, arid land into springs of water,
And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;36 And settled the hungry there; they built a city to live in.
And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards, brought in an abundant harvest.
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.38 God blessed them, they became very many, and their livestock did not decrease.
Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.39 Where they were diminished and brought low through misery and cruel oppression,
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.40 But he poured out contempt on princes, made them wander the trackless wastes,
Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.41 While the poor were released from their affliction; their families increased like their flocks.
The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.42 The upright saw this and rejoiced; all wickedness shut its mouth.
Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.43 Whoever is wise will take note of these things, will ponder the merciful deeds of the LORD.
