| 1 For David himself. Bless the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, thou art exceedingly great. Thou hast put on praise and beauty: | 1 Bless the LORD, my soul! LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory, |
| 2 and art clothed with light as with a garment. Who stretchest out the heaven like a pavilion: | 2 robed in light as with a cloak. You spread out the heavens like a tent; |
| 3 who coverest the higher rooms thereof with water. Who makest the clouds thy chariot: who walkest upon the wings of the winds. | 3 you raised your palace upon the waters. You make the clouds your chariot; you travel on the wings of the wind. |
| 4 Who makest thy angels spirits: and thy ministers a burning fire. | 4 You make the winds your messengers; flaming fire, your ministers. |
| 5 Who hast founded the earth upon its own bases: it shall not be moved for ever and ever. | 5 You fixed the earth on its foundation, never to be moved. |
| 6 The deep like a garment is its clothing: above the mountains shall the waters stand. | 6 The ocean covered it like a garment; above the mountains stood the waters. |
| 7 At thy rebuke they shall flee: at the voice of thy thunder they shall fear. | 7 At your roar they took flight; at the sound of your thunder they fled. |
| 8 The mountains ascend, and the plains descend into the place which thou hast founded for them. | 8 They rushed up the mountains, down the valleys to the place you had fixed for them. |
| 9 Thou hast set a bound which they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the earth. | 9 You set a limit they cannot pass; never again will they cover the earth. |
| 10 Thou sendest forth springs in the vales: between the midst of the hills the waters shall pass. | 10 You made springs flow into channels that wind among the mountains. |
| 11 All the beasts of the field shall drink: the wild asses shall expect in their thirst. | 11 They give drink to every beast of the field; here wild asses quench their thirst. |
| 12 Over them the birds of the air shall dwell: from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices. | 12 Beside them the birds of heaven nest; among the branches they sing. |
| 13 Thou waterest the hills from thy upper rooms: the earth shall be filled with the fruit of thy works: | 13 You water the mountains from your palace; by your labor the earth abounds. |
| 14 Bringing forth grass for cattle, and herb for the service of men. That thou mayst bring bread out of the earth: | 14 You raise grass for the cattle and plants for our beasts of burden. You bring bread from the earth, |
| 15 and that wine may cheer the heart of man. That he may make the face cheerful with oil: and that bread may strengthen man's heart. | 15 and wine to gladden our hearts, Oil to make our faces gleam, food to build our strength. |
| 16 The trees of the field shall be filled, and the cedars of Libanus which he hath planted: | 16 The trees of the LORD drink their fill, the cedars of Lebanon, which you planted. |
| 17 there the sparrows shall make their nests. The highest of them is the house of the heron. | 17 There the birds build their nests; junipers are the home of the stork. |
| 18 The high hills are a refuge for the harts, the rock for the irchins. | 18 The high mountains are for wild goats; the rocky cliffs, a refuge for badgers. |
| 19 He hath made the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. | 19 You made the moon to mark the seasons, the sun that knows the hour of its setting. |
| 20 Thou hast appointed darkness, and it is night: in it shall all the beasts of the woods go about: | 20 You bring darkness and night falls, then all the beasts of the forest roam abroad. |
| 21 The young lions roaring after their prey, and seeking their meat from God. | 21 Young lions roar for prey; they seek their food from God. |
| 22 The sun ariseth, and they are gathered together: and they shall lie down in their dens. | 22 When the sun rises, they steal away and rest in their dens. |
| 23 Man shall go forth to his work, and to his labour until the evening. | 23 People go forth to their work, to their labor till evening falls. |
| 24 How great are thy works, O Lord? thou hast made all things in wisdom: the earth is filled with thy riches. | 24 How varied are your works, LORD! In wisdom you have wrought them all; the earth is full of your creatures. |
| 25 So is this great sea, which stretcheth wide its arms: there are creeping things without number: Creatures little and great. | 25 Look at the sea, great and wide! It teems with countless beings, living things both large and small. |
| 26 There the ships shall go. This sea dragon which thou hast formed to play therein. | 26 Here ships ply their course; here Leviathan, your creature, plays. |
| 27 All expect of thee that thou give them food in season. | 27 All of these look to you to give them food in due time. |
| 28 What thou givest to them they shall gather up: when thou openest thy hand, they shall all be filled with good. | 28 When you give to them, they gather; when you open your hand, they are well filled. |
| 29 But if thou turnest away thy face, they shall be troubled: thou shalt take away their breath, and they shall fail, and shall return to their dust. | 29 When you hide your face, they are lost. When you take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust from which they came. |
| 30 Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. | 30 When you send forth your breath, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. |
| 31 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works. | 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in these works! |
| 32 He looketh upon the earth, and maketh it tremble: he toucheth the mountains, and they smoke. | 32 If God glares at the earth, it trembles; if God touches the mountains, they smoke! |
| 33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. | 33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live. |
| 34 Let my speech be acceptable to him: but I will take delight in the Lord. | 34 May my theme be pleasing to God; I will rejoice in the LORD. |
| 35 Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, and the unjust, so that they be no more: O my soul, bless thou the Lord. | 35 May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, my soul! Hallelujah! |
