¹ Moreover Eliu spoke these words :	¹ Eliú retomou ainda a palavra nestes termos:
² Doth thy thought seem right to thee, that thou shouldst say : I am more just than God?	² Imaginas ter razão em pretender justificar-te contra Deus?
³ For thou saidst : That which is right doth not please thee : or what will it profit thee if I sin?	³ Quando dizes: Para que me serve isto, qual é minha vantagem em não pecar?
⁴ Therefore I will answer thy words, and thy friends with thee.	⁴ Pois vou responder-te, a ti e a teus amigos.
⁵ Look up to heaven and see, and behold the sky, that it is higher than thee.	⁵ Considera os céus e olha: vê como são mais altas do que tu as nuvens!
⁶ If thou sin, what shalt thou hurt him? and if thy iniquities be multiplied, what shalt thou do against him?	⁶ Se pecas, que danos lhe causas? Se multiplicas tuas faltas, que mal lhe fazes?
⁷ And if thou do justly, what shalt thou give him, or what shall he receive of thy hand?	⁷ Se és justo, que vantagem lhe dás, ou que recebe ele de tua mão?
⁸ Thy wickedness may hurt a man that is like thee : and thy justice may help the son of man.	⁸ Tua maldade só prejudica o homem, teu semelhante; tua justiça só diz respeito a um humano.
⁹ By reason of the multitude of oppressions they shall cry out : and shall wail for the violence of the arm of tyrants.	⁹ Sob o peso da opressão, geme-se, clama-se sob a mão dos poderosos.
¹⁰ And he hath not said : Where is God, who made me, who hath given songs in the night?	¹⁰ Mas ninguém diz: Onde está Deus, meu criador, que inspira cantos de louvor em plena noite,
¹¹ Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and instructeth us more than the fowls of the air.	¹¹ que nos instrui mais do que os animais selvagens e nos torna mais sábios do que as aves do céu?
¹² There shall they cry, and he will not hear, because of the pride of evil men.	¹² Clamam, mas não são ouvidos, por causa do orgulho dos maus.
¹³ God therefore will not hear in vain, and the Almighty will look into the causes of every one.	¹³ Deus não ouve as palavras frívolas, o Todo-poderoso não lhes presta atenção.
¹⁴ Yea when thou shalt say : He considereth not : be judged before him, and expect him.	¹⁴ Quando dizes que ele não se ocupa de ti, que tua causa está diante dele, que esperas sua decisão,
¹⁵ For he doth not now bring on his fury, neither doth he revenge wickedness exceedingly.	¹⁵ que sua cólera não castiga e que ele ignora o pecado,
¹⁶ Therefore Job openeth his mouth in vain, and multiplieth words without knowledge.	¹⁶ Jó abre a boca para palavras ociosas e derrama-se em discursos impertinentes.
