¹ Moreover Eliu spoke these words :	¹ Dann sprach Elihu als Erwiderung:
² Doth thy thought seem right to thee, that thou shouldst say : I am more just than God?	² "Dies also hältst du für richtig, "dies", sprichst du, "ist mein Recht gegenüber Gott",
³ For thou saidst : That which is right doth not please thee : or what will it profit thee if I sin?	³ daß du fragst, was es dir nütze, "welchen Vorteil habe ich von meiner Sündenlosigkeit?"
⁴ Therefore I will answer thy words, and thy friends with thee.	⁴ Ich will dir Worte erwidern und deinen Freunden zusammen mit dir:
⁵ Look up to heaven and see, and behold the sky, that it is higher than thee.	⁵ Blick den Himmel an und sieh; schau die Wolken hoch über dir!
⁶ If thou sin, what shalt thou hurt him? and if thy iniquities be multiplied, what shalt thou do against him?	⁶ Wenn du sündigst, was fügst du ihm zu, sind zahlreich deine Frevel, was kannst du ihm antun?
⁷ And if thou do justly, what shalt thou give him, or what shall he receive of thy hand?	⁷ Handelst du recht, was schenkst du ihm damit? Oder was empfängt er aus deiner Hand?
⁸ Thy wickedness may hurt a man that is like thee : and thy justice may help the son of man.	⁸ Nur den Menschen deinesgleichen betrifft deine Missetat und nur die Menschenkinder deine Gerechtigkeit.
⁹ By reason of the multitude of oppressions they shall cry out : and shall wail for the violence of the arm of tyrants.	⁹ Wohl schreit man ob der Gewalttaten Menge, jammert unter der Faust der Großen,
¹⁰ And he hath not said : Where is God, who made me, who hath given songs in the night?	¹⁰ doch keiner fragt: "Wo ist Gott, mein Schöpfer, der Loblieder anstimmen läßt bei Nacht,
¹¹ Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and instructeth us more than the fowls of the air.	¹¹ der klüger uns macht als der Erde Tiere, weiser als die Vögel des Himmels?"
¹² There shall they cry, and he will not hear, because of the pride of evil men.	¹² Da schreit man, doch er gibt keine Antwort wegen der Bösen Übermut.
¹³ God therefore will not hear in vain, and the Almighty will look into the causes of every one.	¹³ Wahrlich, Nichtiges hört Gott nicht, und der Allmächtige sieht es nicht an!
¹⁴ Yea when thou shalt say : He considereth not : be judged before him, and expect him.	¹⁴ Erst recht, wo du sagst, du sähest ihn nimmer! Das Gericht steht bei ihm, und du mußt seiner harren!
¹⁵ For he doth not now bring on his fury, neither doth he revenge wickedness exceedingly.	¹⁵ Jetzt aber, weil sein Zorn nicht strafte und er nichts wußte von heftigem Auftreten,
¹⁶ Therefore Job openeth his mouth in vain, and multiplieth words without knowledge.	¹⁶ da reißt nun Job umsonst seinen Mund auf, hält große Reden voll Unverstand."
