Job 32

DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he seemed just to himself.1 These three men stopped arguing with Job, because he was convinced of his uprightness.
And Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, was angry and was moved to indignation : now he was angry against Job, because he said he was just before God.2 But Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the clan of Ram, became very angry. He fumed with rageagainst Job for thinking that he was right and God was wrong;
And he was angry with his friends because they had not found a reasonable answer, but only had condemned Job.3 and he was equal y angry with the three friends for giving up the argument and thus putting God in thewrong.
So Eliu waited while Job was speaking, because they were his elders that were speaking.4 While they and Job were talking, Elihu had waited, because they were older than he was;
But when he saw that the three were not able to answer, he was exceedingly angry.5 but when he saw that the three men had not another word to say in answer, his anger burst out.
Then Eliu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said : I am younger in days, and you are more ancient; therefore hanging down my head, I was afraid to shew you my opinion.6 And Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite began to speak. He said: I am stil young, and you are old, so Iwas shy and hesitant to tel you what I know.
For I hoped that greater age would speak, and that a multitude of years would teach wisdom.7 I thought, 'Age ought to speak, advancing years wil convey wisdom.'
But, as I see, there is a spirit in men, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth understanding.8 There is, you see, a spirit residing in humanity, the breath of God conferring intelligence.
They that are aged are not the wise men, neither do the ancients understand judgment.9 Great age does not give wisdom, nor seniority fair judgement.
Therefore I will speak : Hearken to me, I also will shew you my wisdom.10 And so I ask you for a hearing; now it is my turn to tel what I know.
For I have waited for your words, I have given ear to your wisdom, as long as you were disputing in words.11 Up to now, I was hanging on your words, I paid attention to your arguments as each of you chose hiswords.
And as long as I thought you said some thing, I considered : but, as I see, there is none of you that can convince Job, and answer his words.12 I paid very close attention; and I see that none of you has confounded Job, not one of you has refutedwhat he says.
Lest you should say : We have found wisdom, God hath cast him down, not man.13 So do not say, 'We have found wisdom; our teaching is divine and not human.'
He hath spoken nothing to me, and I will not answer him according to your words.14 I am not going to follow the same line of argument; my reply to Job wil be couched in different terms.
They were afraid, and answered no more, and they left off speaking.15 They are nonplussed for an answer, words have failed them.
Therefore because I have waited, and they have not spoken : they stood, and answered no more :16 I have been waiting. Since they do not speak, since they have given up the argument,
I also will answer my part, and will shew my knowledge.17 now I shal have my say, my turn has come to say what I know.
Behold, my belly is as new wine which wanteth vent, which bursteth the new vessels.18 For I am ful of words and forced to speak by a spirit within me;
dummy verses inserted by amos19 within me, it feels like new wine seeking a vent, bursting out of new wine-skins.
I will speak and take breath a little : I will open my lips, and will answer.20 To gain relief, I must speak, I must open my lips and reply.
I will not accept the person of man, and I will not level God with man.21 I shall not take anyone's side, I shall not flatter anyone.
For I know not how long I shall continue, and whether after a while my Maker may take me away.22 I do not know how to flatter -- or my Creator would make short work of me.
