DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Grida pure, vi sarà egli alcuno che ti risponda? Ed a cui d’infra i santi ti rivolgerai tu?	1 Make your appeal then. Wil you find an answer? To which of the holy ones wil you turn?
2 Conciossiachè il cruccio uccida il pazzo, E lo sdegno faccia morir lo stolto.	2 Resentment kil s the senseless, and anger brings death to the fool.
3 Io ho veduto il pazzo che si radicava; Ma incontanente ho maledetto il suo abitacolo.	3 I have seen the senseless taking root, when a curse fel suddenly on his house.
4 I suoi figliuoli son lungi dalla salvezza, E sono oppressati nella porta, senza che alcuno li riscuota.	4 His children are deprived of prop and stay, ruined at the gate, and no one to defend them;
5 L’affamato divora la ricolta di esso, E la rapisce di mezzo le spine; E i ladroni trangugiano le sue facoltà	5 their harvest goes to feed the hungry, God snatches it from their mouths, and covetous people thirst fortheir possessions.
6 Perciocchè la sventura non ispunta dalla polvere, E il dolore non germoglia dalla terra;	6 No, misery does not grow out of the soil, nor sorrow spring from the ground.
7 Benchè l’uomo nasca per soffrire, Come le faville delle brace per volare in alto.	7 It is people who breed trouble for themselves as surely as eagles fly to the height.
8 Ma quant’è a me, io ricercherei pure Iddio, Ed addirizzerei il mio ragionamento a Dio;	8 If I were you, I should appeal to God and lay my case before him.
9 Il quale fa cose sì grandi, che non si posson investigare; E tante cose maravigliose, che non si possono annoverare;	9 His works are great, past al reckoning, marvels beyond al counting.
10 Che manda la pioggia in su la terra, E le acque in su le campagne;	10 He sends down rain to the earth, pours down water on the fields.
11 Che innalza i bassi, E fa che quelli ch’erano in duolo sono esaltati per salvazione;	11 If his wil is to raise up the downcast, or exalt the afflicted to the heights of prosperity,
12 Che disperde i pensieri degli astuti, E fa che le lor mani non possono far nulla di bene ordinato.	12 he frustrates the plans of the artful so that they cannot succeed in their intrigues.
13 Egli soprapprende i savi nella loro astuzia, E fa che il consiglio de’ perversi va in ruina.	13 He traps the crafty in the snare of their own trickery, throws the plans of the cunning into disarray.
14 Di giorno scontrano tenebre, E in pien mezzodì vanno a tentone come di notte.	14 In daylight they come up against darkness, and grope their way as if noon were night.
15 Ma egli salva il bisognoso dalla spada, Dalla gola loro, e dalla mano del possente.	15 He rescues the bankrupt from their jaws, and the needy from the grasp of the mighty.
16 E vi è qualche speranza per lo misero; Ma l’iniquità ha la bocca turata	16 Hope springs afresh for the weak, and wickedness must shut its mouth.
17 Ecco, beato è l’uomo, il quale Iddio castiga; E però non disdegnar la correzione dell’Onnipotente.	17 Blessed are those whom God corrects! Do not then scorn the lesson of Shaddai!
18 Perciocchè egli è quel che manda la doglia e altresì la fascia; Egli è quel che fa la piaga, e le sue mani altresì guariscono.	18 For he who wounds is he who soothes the sore, and the hand that hurts is the hand that heals.
19 In sei afflizioni egli ti libererà, Ed in sette il male non ti toccherà.	19 Six times he wil deliver you from sorrow, and the seventh time, evil wil not touch you.
20 In tempo di fame egli ti riscoterà dalla morte, E in tempo di guerra dalla spada.	20 In time of famine, he wil save you from death, and in wartime from the stroke of the sword.
21 Al tempo del flagello della lingua tu sarai nascosto; E non temerai la desolazione, quando verrà.	21 You will be safe from the lash of the tongue, unafraid at the approach of the despoiler.
22 Tu riderai del guasto e della carestia; E non temerai delle fiere della terra.	22 You will laugh at drought and frost, and have no fear of the beasts of the earth.
23 Perciocchè tu avrai patto eziandio con le pietre de’ campi; E le fiere della campagna ti saranno rendute pacifiche.	23 You will have a pact with the stones of the field, and live in amity with wild beasts.
24 E tu conoscerai per prova che il tuo padiglione non sarà se non pace, E governerai la tua casa, e nulla ti verrà fallito.	24 You will know that your tent is secure, and your sheepfold unharmed when you inspect it.
25 E riconoscerai che la tua progenie sarà molta, E che i tuoi discendenti saranno come l’erba della terra.	25 You will see your descendants multiply, your offspring grow like the grass in the fields.
26 Tu entrerai in estrema vecchiezza nel sepolcro, Come la bica delle biade è accumulata al suo tempo.	26 At a ripe age you wil go to the grave, like a wheatsheaf stacked in due season.
27 Ecco ciò noi ti diciamo; noi l’abbiamo investigato; egli è così; Ascoltalo, e riconoscilo	27 Al this we have observed and it is so! Heed it, you wil be the wiser for it!
