Proverbs 9

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINJERUSALEM
Wisdom has built a house for herself. She has hewn seven columns.1 La Sagesse a bâti sa maison, elle a taillé ses sept colonnes,
She has immolated her victims. She has mixed her wine and set forth her table.2 elle a abattu ses bêtes, préparé son vin, elle a aussi dressé sa table.
She has sent her maids to call out to the tower and to the fortified walls of the city,3 Elle a dépêché ses servantes et proclamé sur les buttes, en haut de la cité:
“If anyone is little, let him come to me.” And to the unwise, she has said:4 "Qui est simple? Qu'il passe par ici!" A l'homme insensé elle dit:
“Approach. Eat my bread, and drink the wine that I have mixed for you.5 "Venez, mangez de mon pain, buvez du vin que j'ai préparé!
Leave behind childishness. And live and walk by the ways of prudence.”6 Quittez la niaiserie et vous vivrez, marchez droit dans la voie de l'intelligence."
Whoever teaches a mocker causes injury to himself. And whoever argues with the impious produces a blemish on himself.7 Qui corrige un railleur s'attire le mépris, qui reprend un méchant, le déshonneur.
Do not be willing to argue with a mocker, lest he hate you. Dispute with the wise, and he will love you.8 Ne reprends pas le railleur, il te haïrait, reprends le sage, il t'aimera.
Present an opportunity to the wise, and wisdom shall be added to him. Teach the just, and he will hurry to receive it.9 Donne au sage: il deviendra plus sage encore; instruis le juste, il accroîtra son acquis.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of holiness is prudence.10 Principe de la sagesse: la crainte de Yahvé! la science des saints, voilà l'intelligence.
For by me, your days will be multiplied and years of life will be added to you.11 Car par moi tes jours se multiplient et pour toi s'accroissent les années de vie.
If you would be wise, you will be so for yourself. But if you would be one who ridicules, you alone shall carry the evil.12 Si tu es sage, tu l'es pour toi-même, si tu es railleur, toi seul en porteras la peine.
A foolish and loud woman, who is full of enticements and who knows nothing at all,13 Dame Folie est impulsive, niaise et ne connaissant rien!
sat at the entrance of her house on a seat, in a high place of the city,14 Elle s'assied à la porte de sa maison, sur un trône, en haut de la cité,
so as to call to those who were passing by the way and continuing on their journey:15 pour appeler les passants, ceux qui vont droit leur chemin.
“Whoever is little, let him turn aside to me.” And to the frenzied, she said,16 "Qui est simple? Qu'il fasse un détour par ici!" A l'homme insensé elle dit:
“Stolen waters are more soothing, and secret bread is more pleasant.”17 "Les eaux dérobées sont douces, et savoureux le pain du mystère!"
And he did not know that giants are there, and that her companions are in the depths of Hell.18 Or il ignore qu'il y a là des Ombres et que ses invités sont aux vallées du shéol.
