Psalms 140

1 A Psalm of David. O Lord, I have cried out to you, hear me. Attend to my voice, when I cry out to you.	1 For the leader. A psalm of David.
2 Let my prayer be guided like incense in your sight: the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice.	2 Deliver me, LORD, from the wicked; preserve me from the violent,
3 O Lord, station a guard over my mouth and a door enclosing my lips.	3 From those who plan evil in their hearts, who stir up conflicts every day,
4 Do not turn aside my heart to words of malice, to making excuses for sins, with men who work iniquity; and I will not communicate, even with the best of them.	4 Who sharpen their tongues like serpents, venom of asps upon their lips. Selah
5 The just one will correct me with mercy, and he will rebuke me. But do not allow the oil of the sinner to fatten my head. For my prayer will still be toward their good will.	5 Keep me, LORD, from the clutches of the wicked; preserve me from the violent, who plot to trip me up.
6 Their judges have been engulfed, joined to the rocks. They will hear my words, which have prevailed,	6 The arrogant have set a trap for me; villains have spread a net, laid snares for me by the wayside. Selah
7 as when the lava of the earth has erupted above ground. Our bones have been scattered beside Hell.	7 I say to the LORD: You are my God; listen, LORD, to the words of my prayer.
8 For Lord, O Lord, my eyes look to you. In you, I have hoped. Do not take away my soul.	8 My revered LORD, my strong helper, my helmet on the day of battle.
9 Protect me from the snare that they have set up for me and from the scandals of those who work iniquity.	9 LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let their plots succeed. Selah
10 The sinners will fall into his net. I am alone, until I pass over.	10 Around me they raise their proud heads; may the mischief they threaten overwhelm them.
	11 May God rain burning coals upon them, cast them into the grave never more to rise.
	12 Slanderers will not survive on earth; evil will quickly entrap the violent.
	13 For I know the LORD will secure justice for the needy, their rights for the poor.
	14 Then the just will give thanks to your name; the upright will dwell in your presence.
