Sirach 20

1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.	1 Quanto meglio è il riprendere che il covar ira, e il non impedir di parlare a chi confessa [il suo torto].
2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.	2 [Quale] la libidine d'un eunuco [che] vuol sverginare una giovinetta,
3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.	3 tale è chi con la violenza fa iniquo giudizio.
4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.	4 Quant'è bello, quando s'è ripresi, mostrar pentimento! perchè sfuggirai cosi il peccato volontario.
5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.	5 C'è chi tace e appare sapiente, e c'è chi è odioso per il suo troppo ciarlare.
6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.	6 C'è chi tace perchè non sa che dire, e c'è chi tace perchè conosce il momento opportuno.
7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.	7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino al momento buono, ma il fanfarone e lo sciocco non bada al tempo.
8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.	8 Chi fa gran spreco di parole, danneggia se stesso; e chi s'arroga ingiusta licenza, sarà odiato.
9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.	9 C'è fortuna ne' mali per taluno, e c'è guadagni che si volgono in danno.
10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.	10 C'è doni che non [ti] portan vantaggio, e c'è doni che saran compensati al doppio.
11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.	11 C'è il decader provocato dal fasto, e c'è chi dall'umiliazione solleva la testa.
12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.	12 C'è chi compra molto a poco prezzo, e lo sconta [poi] pagando il settuplo.
13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.	13 Il saggio nel parlare si rende amabile; ma le moine degli stolti saran sprecate.
14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.	14 Il dono dell'insensato [avaro] non ti gioverà, perchè egli ha sette occhi invece di uno!
15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;	15 Poco dà e molto rinfaccia, e quando apre la bocca, gitta fiamme.
16 Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn!	16 Oggi dà in prestito e domani ridomanda: odioso è un tal uomo!
17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.	17 Lo stolto non avrà amici, nè ci sarà riconoscenza per i suoi benefizi.
18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.	18 Quei che mangian del suo pane son lingue false: quante volte e in quanti si faran beffe di lui!
19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.	19 Perchè non ha saputo discernere con retto giudizio quel che era da serbare, nè parimenti quel che non era da serbare.
20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.	20 Le cadute della lingua fallace son come chi cada sul pavimento: cosi repentinamente sopravviene la ruina degli empi!
21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.	21 L'uomo spiacente è come una favola inopportuna: sarà del continuo in bocca degl'ignoranti.
22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.	22 Una massima [proferita] dalla bocca dello stolto sarà rigettata, perchè non la dice a tempo debito.
23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.	23 C'è chi è impedito di peccare per l'indigenza, e nel suo riposo si cruccia.
24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;	24 C'è chi rovina se stesso per vergogna, e per lo sguardo d'uno sciocco si rovina: per accezione di persone si perde.
25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.	25 C'è chi per vergogna promette [troppo] all'amico e se ne fa gratuitamente un nemico.
26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.	26 Triste onta nell'uomo è la menzogna, e in bocca degl'Ignoranti sta del continuo.
27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.	27 È preferibile il ladro all'uomo assiduamente bugiardo; ma l'uno e l'altro andranno in malora.
28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.	28 La condotta de' mentitori è un disonore, e l'ignominia loro li accompagna sempre.
29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?	29 Chi è saggio nel parlare, si porta avanti, e l'uomo prudente sarà accetto a' grandi.
30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.	30 Chi lavora la sua terra, farà alto il suo mucchio di biade e chi coltiva la giustizia sarà esaltato egli stesso: chi piace ai grandi sfuggirà l'ingiustizia.
	31 I regali e i doni accecano gli occhi de' giudici, e, come una museruola in bocca, rattengono i loro biasimi,
	32 La sapienza nascosta e il tesoro invisibile, che utilità hanno l'una e l'altro?
	33 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi occulta la sua sapienza.
